Yay or Nay ?

Anything that gives me less Mike Hogewood and more Thom (pronounced THOM) Brennaman gets a thumbs up in my book

Although he seems to have to neglected to mention CBS's stranglehold on all the good CBS game while ESPN gets stuck with the leftovers

Quote :
"In an interesting bit of news, it appears that Fox Sports are in negotiations to bid for the rights to air ACC basketball and football games.

This comes on the heels of several other major shakeups coming to the televised rights of college football beginning in 2010.

If Fox is successful with their bid, it would make them the exclusive provider of ACC sports.

The goal of the deal is to allow the ACC to air in prime time and on a national scale.

Beginning in 2010, the SEC is moving exclusively to ESPN, since the Big 10 now has their own network.

Another major shift in college football television rights comes as a result of the NBC Universal/Comcast merger that could see Notre Dame losing their deal with NBC.

There is no doubt that gaining the rights to basketball and football would put Fox Sports at the forefront of college sports coverage.

For the ACC, this is a huge deal that could vault the conference back into the national spotlight.

The struggles of ACC football are widely known, but it is still the home to some of the best basketball in the country.

Having national exposure and the ability to reach every home in the country could help revive this struggling football conference."

Won't be much of a huge change likely. I'm sure a lot of the games will be on local Fox stations like FS Carolina or FSN South or whatever.. Shit, even FSN that carries Pac-10 games and shit here I couldn't tell you the channel #.

The Big East signed a contract with ESPN a few years back that said that "every conference basketball game will be on the ESPN family of networks" and everyone thought it was some huge deal but they still put most of the games on the syndicated ESPN+ channels...

Basically the only difference is that you'll have a competing ACC game on Fox going up against the ABC night game and the ESPN night game, one of which will ALWAYS be a SEC game... and the other likely a Pac-10 or Big XII game.

Sounds like a horrible idea. So instead of random channels picking up the NCSU games. Instead I will have to deal with the same media bullshit that we presently deal with for NFL games. NCSU games will be passed up on down here in Wilmington to show every UNC game or to show the post game report from a FL state game.

"For the second straight year, overnight ratings dropped double-digits for the ACC Championship Game.

Georgia Tech's victory over Clemson drew a mere 1.9 overnight rating on ESPN Saturday night, down 35% from a 2.9 for last year's Virginia Tech/Boston College game, and down 55% from a 4.2 for Virginia Tech/Boston College in '07. Both of those games aired on Saturday afternoons on ABC.

The 1.9 overnight rating is the lowest in the five-year history of the ACC Championship Game, the second straight year the game has drawn a record low.

Head-to-head, the ACC Championship Game was outdrawn by 300% by the Big 12 Championship Game on ABC (7.6 to 1.9)."

lol, I hope Fox doesn't pay too much for this product... I guess bball is the main thing they want.

What happened to the SEC's deal with cbs? You know, that deal was solely responsible for SEC football having the resources to dominate like it has recently. Interesting to see the direction things go if ACC gets an exclusive fox deal...The tide could turn?

^^ when it's correct it's ok, but the audio fades in and out every game, and half the time the picture is laggy (still can't quite put my finger on how to describe it, almost cinematic, but in a bad way)

^ the sec dominates because it's full of fans who live, sleep, eat, and shit football. i don't think a tv deal really has much to do with it

I agree, Raycom's HD picture is better than anything else out there...puts ESPN and NBC to shame

Its just their announcers that are terrible

But whenever we "luck out" and get an ESPN game, its either Pam Ward, Pam Ward Jr., or Charles Arbuckle, so its really no improvement

and NBC's picture is basically a 16:9 version of standard def. Terrible.

While we're on the topic, when we do our basketball games on FSNHD, the picture has been really good.

I actually don't have a huge problem with the deal, as long as more games end up on TV and at later times (for football). Its not like anyone gives a fuck about ACC football in the first place, and the announcers we get for the game are constantly garbage already, so why not?

It has EVERYTHING to do with it. Recently, the sec has been like the yankees in terms of media deals and thats given the schools much more money to buy the best coaches and field the best teams.

Years ago, before the most recent cbs contract, the SEC was nothing special but since then we've seen FSUs Miamis ohio states michigans penn states oklahomas texases uscs all become increasingly inferior to SEC powers like Florida Lsu and Bama.
Quote :
"The 2009 season marks the beginning of a new 15-year, $2.25 billion contract with ESPN, which coincides with a 15-year, $825 million deal with CBS. "

FOX Broadcast HD for football is not great.
FSN HD is pretty good.

but Raycom's picture is amazing... have any of yall looked at last year's UNC/State football game that was torrented on your computers? that quality is amazing.
Raycom's coverage would be better than FOX, except for their commentators maybe.

plus Raycom doesn't run a bottomline during games and keeps the screen pretty clean which is better than any other network will ever do, although FOX is close.

For basketball, they would have a real tough time working in games between the Hurricanes and Bobcats which already have preexisting deals, so the ACC schedule would have to be completely changed.

I think it's fine on Raycom.

I TAKE IT ALL BACK AFTER READING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSTS

ANYTHING THAT GETS RID OF RAYCOM'S 12:00 GAMES IS AWESOME. NIGHT GAMES =

I disagree...Im pretty sure you could make a lot more money charging cable companys in the ACC footprint $.10/sub (assuming your channel was in the standard cable package, which the cable providers in this area would undoubtedly have to do) than you would charging $9.95/month for ACC Select to the handful of people who are willing to pay for it. Of course, if you want to make the channel respectable you have to invest a lot more than you would for ACC Select, but you also get a lot more ad revenue...Id say it would be a wash at worse...and it would be good for the conference to have every football and mens basketball game on TV rather than on the internet, as well as conference tournaments (how sad is it that our soccer tournament was only on the internet outside of the championship game, while the Big Ten had most of their tournament on TV and in high def?).

Every time Ive seen reference to this possible TV deal with FOX, it is not clear to me if they mean FOX Network or FSN...Im inclined to think its FSN with MAYBE the occasional game on the network, but who knows. I know the conferences are pissed at how much ESPN threw at the SEC, but an exclusive contract with FOX? This is a mistake I think...ESPN is still the defacto place to go for college football, and if that were to happen, the ACC would be the only league they dont carry, which will result in less coverage outside of live events (look at how much ESPN covered NASCAR when they didnt have that contract anymore, or how much they cover hockey now). The plus would be less hype over the Duke-Carolina game.

As for Raycom, I dont think that package would be affected by this...there will still be syndicated games regardless, and FOX will probably have little interest in taking over production of those.

Edit: And actually, that original "article" (who knows where its from) is full of misinformation, since the SEC is NOT moving exclusively to ESPN next year, since CBS will still have the Game of the Week)...so basically take anything it says with a grain of salt.

i want the raycom HD picture without mike hodgewood. that would be zen

actually, i want the raycom HD feed with NO announcers whatsoever

just a microphone over the field that picks up the players/qb/fans random noises as if you were standing about 50 feet in the air at the 50 yard line.

one time, that actually happened, the announcers audio feed went dead, but the "ambient sound" stayed on.. it was beautiful. about half an hour of ACTUALLY BEING at the game without having to hear some bullshit announcers.

hahahahha

So CBS just randomly picked a not special conference and because of that random selection they are now special... exactly! Something made them pick them over the other conferences to begin with...

Gradually i would think that all of the major networks would have pretty good to really good HD pictures. it's just taking a while as they prioritize where to send limited equipment. eventually all games will be a higher quality HD picture.

But with regards to announcing, there will always be a major difference. I don't watch a ton of non-NC State or ACC football, so based on their overall coverage of sports, here's who I think has the best announce crews:

1.CBS (their tournament crews are all solid, esp when its Bill Raftery+GUS JOHNSON. In football, I like Verne Lundquist and Dick Enberg is good in everything)
2.Turner (Marv Albert and Dick Stockton on pbp, Doug Collins, Charles Barkley, Chip (thankfully not Skip) Caray on baseball, great for NBA, always have been great on baseball too, esp Braves coverage)
3. NBC Sports (Sorta dormant right now, they only have that one NFL game and late-season NHL. But still, Bob Costas and Al Micheals are the best announcers ever and deserve more coverage. I hope they get MLB back sometime soon)
4.ESPN/ABC (The worst and the best. actually, now that i think about it, all the good ABC people aren't even on ABC/ESPN anymore except Brent Musberger. Gary Thorne is better doing hockey. Pam Ward is boring. Lee Corso gets on my nerves. And who can forget this being the people who thought Dennis Miller and Tony Kornheiser belonged in a booth? Also, i dont need the bottom line all the time in the age of smartphones and computers for finding scores even faster. I can't wait till we have interactive graphics and I can get rid of that crap. At least they aren't as annoying as Fox or Raycom)
4.Fox (WOOOOOOOOOOSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH stupid graphics, mediocre announcers)
5.Vs. (good for a hardly visible network, but still very forgettable. I can't remember any of their announcers)
6.Raycom (Terrible annoucers, good picture but that's it. Terrible camera work, bad graphics, did I mention how bad the announcing is. CA-RO-LIIIIIIIIIIINA KIA! Remember when they used to play that same "Advance Auto Parts: We're Reeeeeeeady in Advaaaaaance!" commercial twice a break?)

so what fox stations are we talking about? fox sports network or the regular big fox? the regular big fox is required to give up time for speeches by our awful presidential nightmore sometimes (like last week)and they show sitcoms and crap, and i know it cant be fox news cause games would be on during sean hannity and thats a top rated show. fox sports isnt so great. they always show crap games not like espn or abc or somethin.

in the end, this means no more broadcast ACC games, which I'd care more about if I still lived in range of Raycom stations. it sucks for people w/o cable and i don't like it.

but what can i say, I've started watching exclusively on justin.tv now
