Probably branches falling on power lines.

Last year's blizzard, in Chapel Hill, a transformer blowing lit up the sky green for a good minute. Was pretty.

Any thoughts about when the roads will be back to normalish? I know it's supposed to melt some tomorrow. But then another hard freeze Sunday night.

I'm not planning to resume normal driving activities until Monday afternoon at the earliest.

If I was trying to go to work Monday morning, I'd leave early before everybody else can get on the roads and ruin the commute. Like, even if the roads were perfectly clear, there'd still be tons of wrecks--people going 20 MPH for no reason and other people going 80 with snow glare.

Still snowing a bit here in blowing rock, and the wind is gusting at 60 miles an hour. Just got back from a walk to the store, and my forehead feels like a sheet of ice.

One man has died from an apparent heart attack while shoveling snow up in the Maryland/DC area, and 3 in NYC.

Rule of thumb - pay someone else to do it.

^^^^ Yes, the wind up on Jonas Ridge was insane today. I was up there a few hours ago and it was gusting pretty hard. Down around Collettsville it was just a constant roar through the trees.

Overall, though, the roads ought to be fine for driving Monday in Raleigh. Most of the main roads through the areas I was in had been plowed and were dry as a bone, and this was around Morganton and Lenoir. Even the secondary roads were drivable in a FWD car, as long as you weren't stupid. I can't imagine Raleigh is much worse, so most of the roads should be clear by tomorrow night.

Wonder if schools will be open Monday I can hear people outside trying to drive and failing right now plenty of spinning tires. I know it will get up to 40 tomorrow but refreeze again tomorrow night seems likely.

^I could see a 2 hour delay...but it's hard to imagine schools closing altogether. I'm in grad school at State and have already resigned myself to my fate of going to class Monday.

I think a lot of areas will be just fine tomorrow after melting today bit you have to figure that there are a lot of shady spots that will still be icy tomorrow morning.

all of the main roads were already fine yesterday, and its above freezing and sunny all day today so the side roads will melt. at the most i would expect a 2-hr delay, i can't imagine schools being closed tomorrow.

Schools being closed will probably depend on how the school grounds are (parking lots, walkways for students, etc...) AND the number of outages. A lot of places are still without power.

I'd say wake gets a delay most likely. I'm betting durham schools are closed, as hardly any of the sides roads are cleared. But knowing the school systems, and how they freak out everything will probably close.

It's 45 degrees and sunny in Charlotte, and everything is melting slowly.

My sidewalks are clear except for the fucking piles of cat litter that my dumb fuck neighbor thought was a good idea to pour around...

Main roads were perfectly fine last night and even local roads were drivable with just minimal caution.

As far as winter weather goes, I give this a 3/10.

I just drove to the grocery store main roads were ok but the rest of them entirely depends on whether they are in the sun or shade. Chances of the shaded ones melting before it drops below freezing again seems pretty slim.

^^UNC is closed until noon.

And roads are still hit or miss in Chapel Hill. 54 and other big roads were super clear, but backroads, parking lots and sidewalks are in shit shape. Took me like half an hour to get my car unstuck (my fucking complex didn't bother to clear parking lot this time) but once I got out it was pretty easy going.

^ That sucks. I got lucky and only had it out for 4 hrs.

Joco roads are good, but trees are a mess everywhere.

Wake county, SE roads are ok (South of 40 and E of 401). Otherwise anywhere else shaded roads are bad, getting worse as you go N and W.

Glad I dont own a grocery store, went to one today that had power out for only 12 hrs, they had to throw just about anything cold out. Gonna suck shopping next few days as I think just about every grocery store around me lost power for quite a bit.

Hahahaha, maybe they have generators?

If its a big chain grocery store I wouldn't worry, but if its a mom-and-pop type grocer I would avoid them like the plague

Well, if they would smart all they had to do was put the meat outside in the cold, durrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Nah, we're just poking fun cause you can get a little arrogant about stuff.

And nobody really believed we were gonna get serious snow. But it's North Carolina. We've been on a variable-ratio rewards schedule for our entire lives, and that'll make anybody crazy/hopeful. I'm always gonna cross my fingers and do my snow dance.
