absolutely not. when lenovo builds a laptop that isn't loaded up with crapware, i'll reconsider. until then, lenovo can keep their shitty computers.

i've gotten most of the value out of this laptop that i think i'm going to get. the issue that's causing it to turn on but not boot is a hardware problem. i'd just as soon spend some extra money on a new machine, instead of repairing an older, beat-up one.

I do, you can pick up a set for like $10 from lowes. Worth having around if you take your laptop apart

This makes me nervous.

I've owned Mac desktops my whole life, and they never died. I kinda assumed the same would go for my MacBook.

I mean, this one's a year old, and I need it to last way more than two more years.

[Edited on December 19, 2009 at 4:13 PM. Reason : I can't afford one every three years! That's crazy!]

same here. got mine in april 2006 and we're still going strong. i did replace the hd (with a larger one, not because i had problems) and upgraded the ram and put snow leopard on it. whole thing cost ~$300 to do and i anticipate several more years of good use

You say it turns on? What does it do then?

If you have an Apple Store around, take it to them. They'll look at out of warranty laptops for free and give you your options.

And LOL at the idiots posting "Macs suck." If you're using a Dell, Lenovo, HP (including Compaq), Acer (including Gateway) or Sony, you really don't have any room to say that an Apple sucks. Because the laptops I just named are either shitty (Dell, HP/Compaq, Acer/Gateway) or as expensive as a Mac (Sony) without offering anything over any other computer manufacturer or they're just flat out unreliable (Lenovo).

http://www.squaretrade.com/pages/laptop-reliability-1109/

If you have an Asus or Toshiba, good show. They're offered at a reasonable price and are the most reliable laptops you can buy.

My Powerbook from 2003 still runs like it did when I got it, and the original battery will even last a good half hour.

^^ go pad somewhere else

This MacBook Pro was one of the first off the line, when they started switching to Intel processors. it's been all over the country with me, and I dare say that I was a bit rough with it. I don't think it's really worth fixing, since the repair is very likely to cost upwards of $500. I'm pretty sure that something on the logic board is fried. I've already taken the hard drive out now, so I'll have that when I can get my external SATA connector back.

Power Mac 800DP: 2002-current. Hi.

What a beast. It's like a car with 250,000 miles on it and still chugging along. Might piss off some people on the interstate, but it pretty much works for me.

What is up with this misconception that macs are better for graphics people?

In fact since late CS3 and into CS4 PC's running 64bit (and if you're doing graphics you should be) are noticeably faster than their mac counterparts. Why? Adobe doesn't support 64bit in mac. Just to test we put After Effects CS4 (I mean, that's really the only program that taxes a fast machine) on OSX and a bootcamp Vista64. The gain? ~9%. Which on a production taking 60-90 seconds per frame that's a dang good gain on equal hardware.

Here's a quick google quote from adobe:
Quote :
"However, normal users could see an 8% to 12% performance increase when using 64-bit versions of Adobe's software compared to 32-bit copies."

Again... don't get this common misconception...

^ for most graphics people, it has more to do with preference. and the fact that Macs have traditionally been much better for people that publish. the rest has just been an extension of that.

^... I still don't buy any of that. Our graphics office when I interned for one of the largest firms in town had 5 macs and 2 PC's (one pc for editing - FinalCut HD is joke slow these days - one for Maya.) Needless to say we kept a network storage for all the graphics files produced on the macs and kept a weekly tally to see who could crash their macs more. The PC's rarely crashed.

That POS iMac I worked on (which was only 5 months old when I got there) crashed HARD. Every freaking day. I couldn't do common multitasking without bringing it to it's knees. Honestly when running 1-2 programs at once without really taxing the processor the experience wasn't that bad. Tended to connect up with network stuff easily, booted quickly, nice form factor. But good gravy when you're trying to render After Effects, work in Photoshop and heaven forbid do some disk I/O heavy tasks all at the same time.

Next I worked editing video all freaking day on a Final Cut HD system on a 4 core mac pro. Holy crap that was slow like molasses... Coming from SpeedEdit or even Premiere it was like pulling teeth. Why do I need to render everything before I can edit it? Why am I staring at a blank screen when trying to scrub? Why is your transitions pulling in frames I deleted already? Why do you crash when there is a timecode change on DV tape - JUST FREAKING MAKE A NEW FILE. Or that true pisser, the black screen of nothingness after dropping in a simple transition or something.
