Just a question, how bad would it be to rewrite the main TWW pages to be AJAX powered? Depending on transaction loads it could save a lot of processing power on the server. Would be an awesome holiday upgrade

There are a lot of things about the UI i'd like to see changed. Using AJAX is one of them...but for some reason knowing that this entire site was built with tables bothers me more.

I think our first move should be a wind powered TWW.

I'd be happy if they could just make the ads not stall the shit out of my page loads.

(disclaimer: I'm assuming its the ads but haven't actually checked yet)

Lets just make it TWW 2.0 and pump out new thread notifications on Twitter, sync galleries to Flickr, and all that other annoying Web 2.0 shit that kids these days love so much.

Even just a fresh coat of paint and a couple of new personalization features would probably do wonders.

I'm telling you guys. TWW is not sustainable unless we switch to a renewable power source.

How the F do tables not work?

Here's some text - you put it in a box. The text is in a box. People read it. Who gives a flying fuck? Sorry it doesn't have ivy vines growing around it and a little naked cabana boy cleaning the pool.... Pretty sure the point of this board is to READ FUCKING TEXT.

hey so you know what

threads here are not threaded

they are chronologically sorted lists of posts that belong to a common parent

tables make sense for them

tables make a lot of sense for them

Yeah buddy, but I don't think you get it.

The code that draws all these boxes on the page. You know, the stuff that none of us see because we're too busy reading the content of the page.

It's ugly.

'valign="top"' you have got to be shitting me.

tables MIGHT be the appropriate layout mechanism for the threads themselves. but, and i know you're well aware of this, the entire site layout is made of tables. that's not good. there are 23 table elements on this page alone. at most we might need 1

Believe me, I get it. Table-based layout needs to die in a fire. But using a table to organize a table of data? That is tops.

divs are generic block-level elements only meant to be used when an existing block-level element doesn't convey the correct semantic sense

tables are fine for threads, which are tables of posts

Using tables for the thread body layout isn't The Worst Idea Ever -- it's their use for everything on the site that's the problem. I'd like to markup a clean, semantic, valid version just to see how much bloat we'd lose.

also lol

yeah, you could define them as ordered lists if you wanted

but people do edit them, you know

and your typical post conveys a lot more info than a simple list item

not to mention there are more compatibility issues between browsers with lists and list items than with tables

use your head

You and I are on the same page here.

But on this page we use <strong>

My favorite part is how the only elements on any given page which seem to have ID attributes are the HEAD and BODY, of which there is exactly one (1) each anyway.

I see... I did not realize that tables were the fundamental data structure of this site. That is kind of sad... I like the table formatting of the threads and message.aspx... If improvements can be made to the underlying data structures, then that makes sense.
