From what I remember Norm's Avatar was shot a few times and he was disconnected from it but they never actually show it dying or dead. I assumed the trauma was enough to disconnect the operator and when he fell out of the link machine he was clutching his shoulder and arm, not necessarily mortal wounds. Plus at the beginning the commander talked about how hard it was to kill the Na'vi because of their carbon fiber bones, etc, etc.

Funny how they made such a big deal about the poison tipped arrows when the arrows turned out to be the size of a spear.

Like there's going to be a dude with an arrow through his heart, lungs, and spine and some other dude comes up and says "It's alright man, I've got the anti-venom!"

ummm… that commander’s MO was to overhype and misrepresent the navi threat, which this was a component of.

The non IMAX 3D glasses I have were unevenly polarized, which made it really hard for me to keep a proper 3D effect. The image kind of inverted for me at some points.

Once i accepted this though, i was able to enjoy the move. Honestly, for regular theaters, I don’t know if the 3D is worth it just based on the inconsistency of the glasses.

I’m assuming the IMAX still uses the synchronized LCD shutter things?

I thought it was extremely predictable. As soon as you hear the story about the toruk, you know homeboy is going to end up riding one of the damn things. You know Michelle Rodriguez's fine ass is going to defect. You know as soon as Sigourney Weaver gets put on that tree what's going to happen to Jake.

To say nothing of the fact that the entire thing reminded me immensely of "The Last Samurai" with more blue and killer mech-robots.

And yet, in spite of all of that, I was too completely in awe of the whole thing (particularly at IMAX) that I do not feel like these are major complaints, and normally they would be.

This was exactly my same thought.

On a more tactical note, if the RDA has extra-orbital vehicles and they know that their equipment will be facing serious interference, why didn't they just fire on the site from space (or at least a much higher altitude)? Using a slow-moving shuttle at the same altitude as the native attackers to push an explosive payload out the back hardly seems like a good plan.

Pretty much how I feel. The plot was a mish mash of various cliches but it didn't matter. The movie lived up the hype in pretty much every way it was supposed to. It makes me happy that James Cameron managed to outdo Michael Bay and Roland Emerich at their own games in the same year

I groaned when our friend the Colonel started throwing around terms like "preemption" and "war on terror." Those terms don't even make sense in the context that he's discussing, and I felt like they were forced just because James Cameron wanted to use them.

You knew the moment he communed with Enya, that the planet was going to rise up when all hope was lost to save the day.

"Dances with Samurai... in SPACE!" was the description I preferred.

Maybe I've lived in DC too long, but when I left the theater, the first thought was how these folks are ultimately screwed because while they had won their planet back temporarily, humanity was likely to return in a decade or so and orbital bomb the living snot out of the sacred tree and all the villages. You don't even need nukes: just rain large kinetics down upon them.

Still, I overall enjoyed the movie. It was a lot of fun and beautifully done. Supposedly, Cameron wanted to do two sequels if the first one did well, and given the impact of its opening weekend, I say we can look forward to seeing the saga continue.
