I just bought a new ION platform motherboard to put in a file server. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 got video acceleration working and all that. I want to set it up so that I can remotely manage certain things through HTTP (modify shares, start downloads, delete shit, etc) like FreeNAS.
Anyone know of anything like that I can run under apache? 12/29/2009 11:21:25 PM |

If you want easy file server management, install Windows home server.
If you want free file server management, deal with SSH or Remote Desktop 12/30/2009 5:45:41 AM |

Hey guys, I want to install a free nas software on my computer. FreeNAS does everything I want, so i installed ubuntu. How do i make it like FreeNAS? 12/30/2009 1:23:11 PM |

^srsly.
not sure what ION has anything to do with it, nor video. i think he meant Atom/miniITX as the reasons he's putting it in the file server. 12/30/2009 1:41:09 PM |

It's a NAS but I also have XBMC running on it. I needed a media player for one of my rooms in addition to a file server. It wasn't much more expensive than buying a popcorn hour or something similar.

Sharing files via CIFS in Ubuntu is basically the same as in Windows. Right-Click a folder click the sharing menu item, choose users and security, etc. But you're right in that most of what I need can be done with the management console. Out of curiosity, how well would that run on a computer with 512MB of shared (128 going to the GPU, but configurable) memory? Also, does it have NFS support (for my other media players)?

FreeNAS does almost none of what I want. I was just using the web management interface as an example.

Sine the earlier description didn't give it away... it's a media player in addition to a NAS.]12/31/2009 12:22:56 AM |
