I live in the Mtns and because my apt is situated in a valley, I couldn't get Satellite, so I'm stuck with Charter Cable which sucks...worse than Time Warner. Anyway, I'm thinking about just canceling my cable and keeping the internet so I can just watch everything on HULU. Are there any hardcore Hulu-ers around than can speak to how good it is at new releases and things. The only cable channels I watch are ESPN, CNN, History and Nat Geo/Discovery. Thanks for the help.

You know you can get network channels for free, right? Just use a digital antennae.

You can pretty much find anything you'd want to watch via Hulu, Youtube, or live streams. It won't always be gorgeous, but you can find what you want to watch.

Yea I feel you with Charter; I have had a lot of problems coupled with poor customer service. Outside of the networks, I watch ESPN, ESPN2, Fox Soccer, Discovery/National Geographic, and during the day when my wife is working from home she'll often have Universal HD on. Besides the fact that Charter has just been a terrible experience, the price we are paying for essentially those 5 channels plus occasionally TBS or the random good movie that comes on TV just doesn't seem worth it. (Just the TV portion of our cable bill is $85 and all we have is expanded basic cable, HD, and the $5 sports package).

I REALLY wish there was an option to simply pay for basic cable + pay for specific channels instead of paying $$$ to pick up a half dozen channels I will watch and 100 channels I'll never watch.

We are considering dropping the entire TV portion and just paying for the internet and seeing how that works out. I only watch about 1hr of TV a day right now...she "watches" more since she works from home but said she could probably just leave something on from a network channel over the air instead since the TV is mainly on for some noise.

I guess my only question to you is, how much do you watch those channels and why? Are you watching Discovery/Natl Geo. for specific shows or just because you're bored and found something somewhat interesting on TV to flop in front of? Same with sports. Are you really into watching a lot of sports, or do you find yourself watching an NCAA Basketball game in which you have no real vested interested simply because you enjoy sports and had nothing else to do?

I've been reading a lot more lately and decided it is probably worth the $85 a month to simply read more each day instead of watching TV. Heck, I've barely been touching my guitars the past few months, it would create some more time for that as well.

I could be wrong, but my bet with myself is that after a couple weeks I won't even notice the lack of cable and will probably be left with more time for other things (arguably more productive things). Besides, as vinylbandit said, if you really want to find something, you can usually find it online somewhere.

If it were not for my roommates and my occasional sports watching, I would not subscribe to any television services. I recently found that I get about 15 digital channels for 'free' via my cable internet source as well.

sites like ovguide, ninjavideo, hulu, and all the other online streams are ftw.
