Just go out in public, man. Talk to anyone. 9/10 people are not qualified to say say who should be running the country. They're just too fucking stupid. I hate to be that way, but it's true. If you take a poll and ask "Want free stuff from the government?", most people will say yes. That's the whole point of the constitution. Even if people are retarded and have unreasonable expectations, the politicians will be bound by the law.

What actually happens is that the politicians just ignore the law in order to get re-elected. I'm not really sure how to get around that. Some would say that any government, no matter what the constitution says, is going to abuse its power. The advantage of federalism is that the states should just be able to say "nah, we're not going to enforce that bullshit." Of course, now that the federal government has the power to impose any kind of tax, they can just take most of your money and the states have to beg for scraps back. The federal government basically has de facto power to make any kind of law they want because they can force states to make laws by denying them funding. That's what happened with the drinking age.

The American people are perfectly credible. When you look at an individual -- especially one who is running for an office entrusted with great power -- it's perfectly reasonable to expect them to have the interests of others at heart. That is, at the end of the day, what they're claiming to do -- and to a large extent it's what they actually do, even if they only do so to benefit themselves with re-election, bribes, whatever.

When you look at a great mass of people, you should not expect them to do anything more than what is in their own self-interest. They want free shit. They want to be protected from themselves. So on and so forth.

As to your second post, a big part of it is that it's harder to uproot a pre-existing law than it is to block a new one. Libertarian-minded types make better use of their time opposing the smoking ban before/shortly after it comes into place than they do by opposing long-entrenched laws regarding gay marriage and marijuana.

And I suspect that you'll find that many, perhaps most people that are vocally opposed to the NO-SMOKING law have key libertarian meanings.

Let's not derail the thread BUT Franken is probably more passionate of a senator than half the people in there....

In terms of the whole American People's credibility watch - we as a whole don't have much right now... There's this mentality of wanting everything and not having to give anything up which has lead to massive debt on a private and personal level.

Add to that the fact that most Americans are either ill informed or uninformed about the issues facing our country and our world. People leave it up to the CNNs and Fox News of the world to tell them what's going on and what to think instead of figuring things out on their own.

Even people that are rather educated sometimes have a limited understanding of whats going on in the world (ie my sister is a teacher and two years ago - give or take - I asked her if she'd heard the latest about Darfur, she had zero clue what I was talking about....)

i think that this song brings up a lot of good points to nowhere... it's like for every president... is there a point in saying the same thing over and over? is it the same thing people have always said over and over? or is it just 20th century? i wonder if abraham lincoln or fdr could have responded to this song... i feel like this is a post atomic bomb thing, which i think is when america started on a "decline" if anything could be charted
