Dear Star Trek nerds:

If I dated a man with a Star Trek tattoo, does that officially make me a nerd?

Thanks

I challenge the answers given by god and moron. There is absolutely NO WINDOW on the front part of the bridge where the viewscreen is.

In fact, there was an episode of the next generation where geordi was ordered to get "a better look" at something outside, and he had to go into a different room in order to peep out of a window.

Each ship design could be different, but as God pointed out, this fact was critical in Nemesis.

The Enterprise E is the BEST example because we SEE THE BULKHEAD when the view screen image goes off in one of the movies.

I dont know why you would put the captain and other important crew in harms way by sticking them on the top of the ship with a window

I'm pretty sure I read from a couple of different sources that they almost made geordi's character gay but didn't want to push the boundaries too much

and I don't think the viewscreen was ever a window either, they did have a small skylight on the next generation

They've stated that all windows on Enterprise D are made of the same transparent aluminum that Scotty introduced in STIV.

no windows on the bridge, the observation room (briefing?) part is not the bridge. the hull looks really THICK around the bridge area as well...

^^ There's no window on the bridge.

But then again, that's the Enterprise D.

See Nemesis for further study.

no window

[Edited on February 3, 2010 at 2:42 PM. Reason : no window.... that was raw structural damage through the physical wall and armor during Neimisis ]

My theory is that the only two things they know about Star Trek are the Vulcan salute and that Orion slave girls are slutty. They might know about bon far.

Quote :
"Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman created the combination window/viewscreen in order to justify the placement of the bridge at the top of the ship: "...it was based on the odd fact that, although the bridge didn’t usually have a window, it was nonetheless situated, much like a naval ship, at a high look out vantage point (which, by the way, seems unnecessarily vulnerable to attack). Rather than move the bridge, we added a window to justify it’s location.""

so the "real" enterprise(s) do NOT have a window.

This new jj abrams movie enterprise apparently does.

The difference is that I have never met a sports fan that is a loner. They are always willing to interact with other people and go tailgating at sporting events, or play sports with people. Most of the Trekees I have met are loners that don't go anywhere, or do anything besides watch tv, play on the computer, and play video games.

That's a circular argument, though. Maybe they're loners because they're ostracized by society for being fans of Star Trek?

^No I get along with one of them pretty well, but he is waaaaaaay shy for some reason. A friend of mine and me were going to get together to drink beer and watch movies one Saturday and he wouldn't come even though he would have liked the movies we were going to watch. He also wouldn't come to the parties that we invited even when we invited him 1 week in advance. He said, "I need to rest."

Ok, the green line is the limit of the force field, the yellow line is the approximate edge of the former viewscreen. notice that there is significant bulkhead still remaining where the screen would have been. (orange arrows)

^^ Possibly. It depends on the popularity of the films, probably, and any new series will be in the same "Alternate timeline."

^Because the 2009 film is a reboot of the entire series.

Do you think the Borg will play a prominent role in the future films? My guess is no, since this is based on TOS canon and the Borg never made an appearance there. They were, however, in ENT.

the NCC-1701-D and NCC-1701-E both do not have 'windows' on the bridge, it's a view screen...

the reboot NCC-1701

also does not have a window...

Probably not. Abrams seems to want to stick to mostly TOS era shit. That's what we get for having him grow up in that era.

Why don't they ever get to other galaxies more? It seems that they have a pretty alright handle on the alpha quadrant for example, why couldn't they just drive out of the galaxy, through the Alpha quadrant? I understand exploring the Delta quadrant and all, but the way it looks on the map anyway, is that the galaxy is flat, kind of like North Carolina. So if the Alpha Quadrant is like the Raleigh-Durham area, and North Carolina is the galaxy, why couldn't they just go North to Virginia?

Well, first off, it isn't really flat. That's just so it's easier for the audience to understand. The same reason they fight face to face on a two-dimensional plane.

And a big criticism of Star Trek as a whole is why they never explored more of the other quadrants. Even series that had other quadrants as a large part (DS9/Gamma, VOY/Delta) didn't really explore the idea. DS9 only had a dozen or so episodes set in the Gamma quadrant, and Voyager basically ignored the relationship between other quadrants, considering they stayed in the Delta quadrant until the final episode (spoiler alert).

And the other weird thing is how they very rarely mention the beta quadrant, even though most of the Romulan empire is inside it.

^^ really? it takes them 70 years just to go from one side of the galaxy to the other, you think they are gonna spend the thousands it will take them to go to a whole other galaxy. plus, they don't have infinite resources, where are they gonna stop and refuel in the empty space between galaxies? they just aren't at that level yet.

also, as far as gays in star trek. there were some lesbians in ds9
