what scenario would have us going to the post season with a 5-11 conference record? I don't know that we could even get an NIT bid if we went 5-11 and lost the ACC championship game.

Who gives a shit the point is we dont need to give up on the season. We need to get rid of the stench of losing so we can accomplish things next year.

If we go 5-11 against a brutal conference schedule that is a solid job with the squad we're putting out there.

FYI, we play in the ACC... not the Big XII or Big East.

FYI, the ACC top to bottom is super tough this year and we only play Miami and BC once.

I think pretty much everyone agrees it's not vintage ACC. It's certainly not the Pac-10 but I can't justify calling a conference with only two Top 25 teams "brutal."

Most years the ACC has only one or two 100+ RPI teams and this year we have four.

Frankly, I think you're just trolling everyone recently, so I'm not even going to bother continuing this.

kenpom's formulation which is miles better than the RPI still has ACC as the number one conference. and ncsu is the lowest-ranked at #84.

Pomeroy also does things based on efficiency which is inherently biased towards major conferences. I like looking at individual units (offense/defense) but don't think it does as good a job when ranking teams based on the whole picture (schedule/wins/losses/etc)

Also, Herb's team is #36 in Pomeroy which I have a hard time reconciling with their actual play.

kenpom: thinks the acc is good
rpi: thinks northern iowa is the #17 team in the nation

both need a credibility thread imo

It basically rewards teams who play easier schedules, especially out of conference.

Very generally, the overall Pomeroy rating is based on the average of the offensive and defensive efficiency ratings. You are going to have a more efficient team (which Pomeroy defines as points for/against per 100 possessions) when you play an easier schedule.

Obviously that is a very "loose" definition but I think you can see where I'm going with it.

[Edited on February 20, 2010 at 4:36 PM. Reason : i know more goes in to the pythag rating but like I said this is very loose explanation]

When it comes down to it the Big East has more top teams but the ACC is more consistent.

The Big East has a ton of extra teams so they look much better than the ACC if you look an arbitrary poll like the top 25, but if you look at the league as a whole there really isn't a very strong argument for the Big East being better than the ACC top to bottom.

If you look at the top 50 a higher percentage of our teams are in it. If you look at the top 80 our entire conference is in it while the Big East has two awful teams.

I just have a hard time putting much faith in any poll that doesn't have the Big East as the top conference (Sagarin, Pomeroy, RPI)

Big East is the best conference based on the eye test

no reason to meltdown when we lose, but can't give up, a win is good, next year should be better...

Haha ok....they have the least amount of talent in the ACC. I'm not the only one that can recognize a good coach.

Before the season I would have guessed they would go 3-13.

I'll wager he gets more COY votes than Sidney Lowe does.

Look dude, they beat us twice easily and have less stars, talent, blah blah blah than us.

He's a great coach and you'll be hard pressed to find someone that isn't biased to say he isn't.

[Edited on February 25, 2010 at 3:21 PM. Reason : They've been figured out and gone to shit and still managed to beat us twice, what's the argument?]

Haha ok. It's year four and Lowe's still at the bottom.

I would wager any amount you want that Tony Bennett will be in the NCAAs.....possibly in 3. His class for next year is solid too.

I'm glad you're here boozie. Really, I am. You provide a sort of humor that no other posters provide. I know you're not being funny on purpose, but still. I'm not speaking of this particular quote, but your newest lame argument.

^Glad your sold on that. If he can't do it with Harrow/Brown next year he's gone.

^^Virginia has more talent than us? They have one good player and a bunch of fringe ACC players (Just like us) but I know you'll say Sylvan is a guard but he's not a point he's a wing.

Continue to compare our situations to others to make ours look better though....UNC, UVA, like I give a shit about others.

Here's how our roster breaks down by stars:

5 star recruits: nadda
4 star recruits: Smith, howell, painter (note: 2 freshman)
3 star recurits: horner, gonzalez, williams, mays, thomas, wood
2 star recruits: degand, vandenberg

And UVA has a superstar in Landesburg that can basically run the offense himself. So I'd say UVA talent > NC State talent.

If we just had anyone that was threat to penetrate off the dribble on a consistent basis, it'd be a totally different team.

26-7 (13-3) tied for first in what turned out to be the best conference that year
