Quote : | "Jilted by one coach, rejected by two others, Tennessee has likely found a new coach in Duke's David Cutcliffe. Multiple media outlets, including the Knoxville News Sentinel, have reported that Cutcliffe will be named the Volunteers' new coach. After only one turbulent season, coach Lane Kiffin jumped from Tennessee to Southern California on Wednesday, which started a search that likely has led to Cutcliffe, a long-time Tennessee assistant who has breathed life into Duke's dormant football program the past two seasons. Cutcliffe, 9-15 at Duke, worked at Tennessee for 19 seasons in two separate stints, dating back to 1982 and most recently in 2006. Cutcliffe and Duke athletic director Kevin White declined to comment on Thursday. The Volunteers had been publicly rejected by Texas assistant Will Muschamp and Air Force coach Troy Calhoun since Kiffin's stunning departure." |

State will face him again in 2012, assuming Coach Cut doesn't replace Kiffin at Southern Cal after next season 1/14/2010 10:49:30 PM |

I think it is a great move. Look how much better Duke has played under him. Also he led Ole Miss to an 11 win season and a Cotton Bowl victory. There last conference title was in 1963. They are another one of the NC State type of programs that always struggles to finish above .500 every year.1/15/2010 12:22:50 AM |

I can't really blame Cutcliffe, he's in a high paid low risk job right now. Their AD is almost as bad as Fowler. 1/15/2010 9:19:42 AM |

Apparently the major contention according to ESPN is that Cutcliffe couldn't bring his own staff. Tennessee's loss is Duke's gain. 1/15/2010 9:47:34 AM |

I, for one, am thrilled that UT didn't end up with Cutcliffe. That would be like hopping into the Delorian with Doc Brown and going back to 1990. It would be giving up and taking a safe pick that would keep UT decent but never great. The main sticking point was that Cut wanted to bring his entire staff and get rid of some of the coaches still at UT. I'm glad that Cut is so loyal that he turned down an offer from UT. Otherwise, UT would have Duke's vaunted defensive coaching staff. IDK who Tennessee's next coach will be but I'm happy it's not Cutcliffe. 1/15/2010 10:05:18 AM |

I don't get this thing about schools wanting to keep assistants from the old staff.
Seems like that'd be an issue with almost any head coach. 1/15/2010 10:57:45 AM |

I think we're past NC State at this point.
We got rejected by Barnes and Calipari. If there was a third to reject us then I've blocked it out of my mind. When we went for the "NC State Guy" he agreed to come help us out.
They went for the "Tennessee Guy" (even though he went to Bama) and he turned them down. 1/15/2010 11:12:43 AM |

Did we actually offer Steve Lavin the job? I swear I remember that being more talk than reality, and Lavin even denying that he'd ever been approached.
ugh, if so, it's embarrassing that we'd even contact that loser. 1/15/2010 11:29:04 AM |

^^ I thought we were all over Lavin right after Calmari fucked us. Maybe we never offered because he told Fowler not to. Either way this UT search is nearly as bad as ours except this one is getting much more coverage. 1/15/2010 11:35:57 AM |

Kippy Brown is the "Tennessee Guy" UT is looking at.
Quote : | "Kippy Brown’s turn to interview is scheduled for today according to a source.
At least one of his former players believes the interim Tennessee coach should have a chance to make it permanent.
Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson, a player with no ties to the Vols other than a relationship with Brown, reached out this morning to The Sports Page to endorse his old position coach as Lane Kiffin’s replacement.
“The way he prepared and coached me really showed up on the field,” Johnson said. “He’s been an offensive coordinator for a few different teams, and I think him being a college head coach would fit perfectly.”
Brown's ties to UT after serving two stints as an assistant make him a strong candidate as well, though Louisiana Tech's Derek Dooley and Utah's Kyle Whittingham have also emerged as the search heads into its third full day.
Brown also has a solid reputation for his work with some of the best receivers in the game and is already at UT, which could also make him more appealing. Perhaps the only concern for the Vols at this point might be his ability to recruit after spending so much time in the NFL, but Johnson also suggested that shouldn't be an issue.
Perhaps the only concern for the Vols at this point might be his ability to recruit after spending so much time in the NFL, but Johnson also suggested that shouldn’t be an issue.
“The big thing about Kippy was, before I was drafted he didn’t know anything about me,” Johnson said. “He came down to Miami to learn everything about me, and then I got to learn everything about him. It was really like a father-son bond.
“I can remember times during my rookie year, I was going crazy. We were losing all the time, I couldn’t understand it. He would always come by me, put his hand on my shoulder and give me that talk. No matter what, he would tell me that things would all work out.”
Brown and the Vols are both in the process of trying to work something out today. The next candidate up will be taking an NFL endorsement with him into the interview." |
