I was looking at this:

http://sewelldirect.com/Intellinet-Data-Wallplate-White-2-Outlet.asp

Can you have one outlet for the Ethernet and the other for the phone? (as long as you have the right keystone jack for each wire)

I don't see why not, and last time I checked you can use the same cat5e/cat6 cable for both

I got all my keystone stuff at Lowe's when I was building my house. Every room has a cable tv jack and cat5 jack on the same plate.

[Edited on January 19, 2010 at 11:14 AM. Reason : Lowe's prices weren't that much higher than anywhere else I checked out.]

RJ-45 Keystone (Beige) $1.34

Wall Plate (2 socket beige) $0.52

RJ-11 Keystone (Beige) $1.22

That's everything you need. It'll be much cheaper than lowes.

They're toolless keystones. If you want the punchdown ones, it'll cost you like $.10 more.

I was talking with the phone people today and they said they can use RJ45 as a phone line. To save the company some money i was going to run the phone line as well and let them connect everything.

How do i setup a phone keystone to work with a RJ45 cable?

RJ45 is not a cable its the connector.

Normal phone cable (4 wire) is cat3, network is (8 wire) cat5/6. If you want to use cat5 to run the phone thats fine. just dont run it on the same cable as the network.

you just need to punch the same 2 wires into the rj11 keystone that you punched down wherever the phone service is coming from. RJ11 connectors also fit nicely into rj45 keystones.

yes, i will be running an entirely different cat5e just for phones.

I was going to use phone keystones and go with this pattern:

red --> white with blue stripe
green --> blue
black --> white with green stripe
yellow --> green

That will work, but the blue pair is technically backward.

should be:

red --> blue
green --> white with blue stripe
yellow --> green
black --> white with green stripe

red/yellow are the ring lines, and green/black are the tip lines

Only thing you might want to consider is that using 4 wires for ethernet and 2 for phone, you lose the ability to use Gigabit Ethernet, which requires all 8 wires. This may or may not be an issue for you, but just an FYI.

nm, i missed where you said you'd have a separate run for the phone line.

got my phone keystones in.

I was expecting the keystones to match what wolfmarsh had said but it looks they have a different color scheme on them for the wires (i.e the orange color).

should i just follow the keystone schemes for the cat5 colors?

as long as you're consistant it doesn't matter what you pick

[Edited on January 26, 2010 at 9:40 AM. Reason : i'd use the ones on the keystone to prevent future confusion]

yeah i don't know why that would be any different. The only difference between cat3 and cat5 is the number of twists in each pair. 1,2,3, and 6 are used by ethernet (except for gig which uses all pins)

ok, i didn't know if it made a difference. I'll just follow the color scheme then.

Wow, ive honestly never seen a jack pinned out that way.

I wonder if the numbers actually do indicate which pin that is in the jack, I would bet they dont. If they did accurately indicate that, then the phone line pairs would be on separate pairs in your cat5 cable, which doesnt make sense.

Can you check that and post back?

I had some issues with my punch down tool on the RJ45 keystones. It seems it would punch the wire too hard into the keystone and i would not get a good connection. Using my cable tester i had to go back and redo a bunch of them.

I was going to do the phone keystones but i've left the wire hanging for the phone guy to do it and test it, im just not confident in my keystone punch tool.

I'll see what he says about those i posted.

just to update,

just about all of my RJ 11 keystones had a low tone when tested by the phone guy. He had to replace all of them. After talking with him we both came to the conclusion that intellinet is pretty much garbage. I'll spend more money on a good USA brand next time.

RJ 45 keystones are ok now I think. My punch down had a really sharp blade on both sides. I filed down the non-cutting side and it seems to preserve the wire a little better.
