Never took 205, but everything for 340 is online. If you have good reading comprehension, then 340 will be easy. 340 doesn't take attendance or have papers, just a weekly one question quiz and 3 exams w/ 20-25 questions (can't remember). All the quizzes & tests are taken online and are mult choice or t/f. Also, when in doubt, put what you think Austin wants the answer to be

205 is easy, and somewhat interesting. 340 is usually described as not too hard, but not so interesting. I was a philosophy major in undergrad & used up as many electives as I could on taking more philosophy courses. I took 16 philosophy courses in total. I specifically avoided 340.

if you've never had a philosophy class, you'll probably like 205 more

thanks for the replies

I took 205 this semester to fill up my philosophy requirement, but forgot I could take any phi elective, I would have taken 340 because it looks easier than 205, according to the grade distriubtions
although it does seems more natural to take intro to philopsophy before taking the more advanced classes though

[Edited on January 23, 2010 at 11:43 PM. Reason : btw were any of the readings for 340 are sparknotes?]

if you count on spark or cliff notes for reading, then 340 isn't for you

340 readings were interesting, IMO... however, definitely not sparknotes material.
When I took it, lectures were 100% optional and all graded parts of the class were online, multiple choice or T/F. Lots of his questions really forced you to think, and even when you did, sometimes you wouldn't select the answer he was looking for. As mentioned above, course also had a VERY generous grading scale.

i just checked his website for PHI 340, and it says there is a paper that is $10 of the grade and it is difficult? so is there a paper or not?

i guess I am fortunate I took PHI 205 for my phil req. because all the readings are on sparknotes

"For 84% of grade: three non-cumulative exams (all exams will be on-line, open-source, have twelve True/False and thirteen multiple choice questions, and be available to each student for 24 hours on scheduled dates). For 10% of the grade: one quiz on Mind/Body Dualism (twenty multiple choice questions, available for 336 hours). For 6% of the grade: one quiz on the syllabus (with fifteen multiple choice questions). Three course score enhancement options will also be available, including an optional, non-cumulative final exam and a set of fifteen one-question microQuizzes."

If you're that worried about it, just enroll and if you don't like it then drop it. I've never seen anyone stress over an elective so much

that looks easy, but I looked at his website for lecture classes. I guess he changed the requirements.

this looks even easier than my PHI 205 class right now

340 is a MUCH better/easier class than 205. 205 is rather dull.
