i'm more of the opinion that it should be reserved for excellence throughout an entire season, rather than getting hot over a few weeks. i mean MOP of the final 4 is nothing to sneeze at, and wayne's one of my favorite players, but IMO he didn't do quite enough to get up there.

I agree. I only think Hansbrough and Lawson from those teams should have their jerseys in the rafters. Hansbrough retired since he won NPOY, and Lawson honored since he won ACC POY.

forte was co-player of the year in the acc along with battier and had a damn good year, so he definitely deserves it (although i can't stand him). oddly enough, ACC POY by itself doesn't get you up there it was changed this year.

the real glaring omission is ed cota. if there was ever a guy deserving based on career stats, it's him.

Well Forte did win ACC POY, even though that was a tie with Shane Battier. Obviously that shouldn't have happened, but we can't change it. I think if you win ACC POY then you should get your jersey honored by your school. I do agree that Ed Cota should be honored over Ellington. Ed Cota finished his career as the third all-time leader in assists in the NCAA, behind #2 Chris Corchianni, and #1 Bobby Hurley. I think it's pretty cool that #1, #2, and #3 all came from Tobacco Road schools.

Once they set the standards, they kind of have to keep doing it. Obviously, it does look totally ridiculous.

But I think one of the big reasons it looks ridiculous is because Chapel Hill basketball teams have been professional outfits with a soulless business feel for many years. I don't think honor or tradition when I think Chapel Hill; instead, I think: competitively managed sports machine with dominant merchandising power.

Since 1977 when the McDonald's All-American game/distinction first came about, every single player to have their jersey honored by Chapel Hill has been a McDonald's All-American. That goes all the way back 22 players to Al Wood. This is not the case for Duke, Kansas, Florida, or Kentucky (I checked), and I'd be willing to be that it's not true for any other basketball powerhouse in the nation.

My point is that UNC-Chapel Hill is far and away the worst of the worst in this regard, and it's a big part of the reason why the pomp and ceremony of honoring jerseys seems so silly.

Madman, don't know who you are, if you're a UNC-CH fan or what. Just be clear that what I pointed out is kind of interesting. Try to imagine that some awesome, cool dude who you really admire and wanna bwn is the one who shared that info with you...maybe you'll take it differently.

^^ part of what built that brand is the tradition of the program so of course they are going to continue to honor it.

And I don't really think UNC is much different than UK in that respect... maybe the biggest difference is the ESPN hype machine of the Duke rivalry?

Antawn (pronounced Ant-wan) Jamison never won a national title, you have to win NCAA player of the year, not win a national title. If you win NCAA player of the year, you are player of the year in your conference and an all american. You can't be a national player of the year and not an all american, how could that happen, that would be like saying you're the best player in America but not one of the five best??? Basically, NCAA player of the year = jersey retired at UNC. And there are some troubled folks here who can't see straight. To put it in perspective, they have a "Hodge" type player come through at least once every full class (4 years) and I can't really argue with that, but obviously some will, it just so happens they have so many of them that no one sticks out as much as Hodge did here for the last 15ish years of NCSU basketball.

With regards to the NCSU folks that think UNC is ridiculous to hang all those jerseys, well first, why do you care, it's thier jerseys in thier building that they paid for privately??? Secondly, the city of Raleigh held a parade for our Gator Bowl win. Of course I didn't expect our Ath. Dept. to turn down such a gesture from the city, but it's completely over the top compared to hanging a couple jerseys for a non BCS bowl. We also had bobble head night on Hodge's senior night/crotch punch. If Unc had a bobble head give away for every player that was as good as Hodge you would be exponentially more furious than you are now, because it would happen every other year. SOrry to bring common sense to a UNC bashing thread, but you can definitely hate on the 1924 Helms banner, that is total garbage, as is the Haywood jersey if it hangs.

My personal opinion which is irrelevant is that anyone in the 95-99 regime at UNC besides Jamison shouldn't see their jersey in the rafters. In 98, lost to Utah, which had 2 guys that could play, and the rest were some of the most unathletic players I've seen. The Stackhouse/Wallace/Jamison/Carter era had more talent in the NCAA

so much fail here. first of all, stackhouse and wallace played from 94-95 and jamison/carter played from 96-98, so they never played together. that team that lost to utah was stacked with jamison, carter, and cota

Notice I said 95-99, Stackhouse and Wallace came in the Fall of 93, I said the era, not that Carter and Jamison played with Stack and Wallace, never said that. 95-99 is a five year stretch anyway, which was mentioned to assume that they all didn't play with one another. For example, the last 5 or 6 years of NCSU basketball could be defined as the Hodge/Grant/Horner era. I'm very aware the 98 team didn't include all 4 and that UNC still lost to a vastly less talanted team in Utah. The players that have their jerseys in that 95-99 that I don't think should are Stack, Wallace b/c they stayed two years with no title, and apparently Haywood, I didn't even know his was up there. He was dominated by Duke, a not-on-paper requirement that Dean and the hierarchy would obviously frown upon when deciding to honor a jersey. I have no idea if Donald Williams has his jersey honored, but if I were Dean, his would be up there well ahead of Stack and Wallace.
