I just think they are way too far off.

I know NBA players live paycheck to paycheck, but they have an ego and I don't see them giving up money they already signed for on top of all the future concessions.

The owners have so much leverage they have no reason to give in. They are mostly operating at a loss anyway, no harm in shutting down operations for a year.

100% Yes

There will be basketball in 10/11 and 11/12

Whoops I was a little drunk last night, for some reason I thought it said the owners can cut it short by one season if they want to.

Okay, change the topic to "Will there be a '11-'12 season?"

My vote is still no.

I think the NFL will work it out. Those players have really short shelf lives and they need to get paid while they can. Plus, the NFL is still fairly profitable for both parties. I feel like they will work together to get a deal done.

The NBA owners will lose a lot less money by foregoing the season. Therefore, they have very little incentive to work with the player's union. The concessions they are asking for are off the charts, there is no way the player's will accept quickly. Rumors suggest they want to instill a hard cap, cut existing salaries by 20-25%, and make future guaranteed contracts a maximum of three years.... Those are all HUGE cuts that will take a big slice out of the player's pie.

well it must weigh pretty heavily on guys like wade, lebron, howard to lose a year out of their primes when they are trying to establish themselves in the hall of fame

I actually think it would be less of an issue for the nfl because they age better IMO, to me nfl is more about the mileage so missing a season wouldn't be quite as bad

I think Lebron is pretty well established. The work stoppage of 98-99 didn't slow down the development of the up-and-comers of that time period (Duncan, Iverson, Kobe).

Blue Edwards' career highlight was teaming up with Brad Lohaus in NBA Jam. That and having a Canadian made-for-tv movie about his child custody battle.

Quote :
"At the end of 2001, Edwards was involved in one of the most public child custody cases in Canadian history. While playing for the Vancouver Grizzlies in the spring of 1996, Edwards started an affair with Canadian citizen Kimberly Van de Perre. He had at least two other affairs. During the affair with Kimberly, she became pregnant and gave birth to a baby boy named Elijah, in June 1997. When Elijah was three months old, Ms. Van de Perre began proceedings for custody and child support, naming Edwards as the father of the child. Edwards responded initially by seeking joint custody and liberal access, but later changed his response to seek sole custody.[2]
After a lengthy trial that ran from the fall of 1998 to early 1999, the trial judge released his decision and awarded sole custody to the mother. Edwards was given considerable access – four one-week periods quarterly throughout the year, shared time at Christmas and on Elijah’s birthday and additional access upon short notice when he was in Vancouver. Theodore appealed this decision.
During the hearing at the British Columbia Court of Appeal, the Court invited Mrs. Edwards to apply to be admitted as a party and to request joint custody of Elijah with her husband. Mrs. Edwards is also an African American. This new, joint application for custody was successful, and Elijah was placed in the custody of Mr. and Mrs. Edwards.
The Court of Appeal's decision was stayed to allow the mother the opportunity to seek leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada, with the result that Elijah remained primarily in his mother's care throughout these proceedings. In 2001 the Supreme Court of Canada restored the trial decision and awarded custody to Elijah's mother; the Court concluded that in this case there was no evidence introduced that race should be "an important consideration".[3] After the Supreme Court affirmed that the mother should have sole custody, the father ceased visiting and paying child support.
In 2009, the Canadian Television Network produced and aired a made for TV movie based on the custody battle story entitled "Playing for Keeps".[4][5]"

Ask Shawn Kemp how the lockout did for him

He gained 100 lbs.

I just think there is no way the player's union accepts such gigantic concessions right off the bat.

And the owners have no reason to budge at all. Almost all of them stand to gain immeasurably by forcing the players into their deal. The players have zero leverage because without playing they don't make money. And the owners stop hemorrhaging money while play is stopped.

If you didn't have a Seattle SuperSonics Shawn Kemp jersey in 1995, then you should be punched in the face.

I don't like the modern day NBA game...no defense...everything is 1-on-1...no team play

Give me the 80s anyday...when teams were scoring 125 points a game and Michael Jordan was breaking down defenders 1-on-1

oh wait...

if you think lebron and kobe are playing one on one then you just aren't watching. illegal defense made it harder to focus on stopping one guy.

the athleticism has just made defense nearly impossible

I had my Charles Barkley black Suns jersey in 1995, punch yrself in the face.

Also the NBA game has changed little if you actually watch. Oh no, what happened to the fundamentals we see in college? Well, they've never translated to the NBA. Like Twista said, remember when all the games were 125-124?

As I expected things went really poorly today in negotiations.

The players are not going to be willing to accept the new realities of the American economy and the owners are not going to accept their team's being financial losers when their other businesses are struggling so badly.
