and what event is your most and least favorite?

I tend to like the summer games more and while it isn't the World Cup I still like watching the men's soccer tournament the most. I am not too worried about gymnastics.

As for the winter games, I like bobsledding the most. I don't get excited about figure skating.

olympic hockey is fucking amazing!! Most skiing and snowboarding events are a lot of fun to watch.

Winter > Summer. Except in Vancouver, where it's supposed to be 47 and rain everyday.

Overall, Summer>>>>Winter

However, Olympic Hockey is my favorite. Speed Skating is also towards the top of my list.

I think i enjoy Winter more. It's mostly because of Hockey, but i also enjoy the freestyle and alpine skiing as well as the nordic jump. Plus there's nothing like laying on the couch and taking a nap to some curling.

Swimming and diving are probably my favorite summer events, the rest i'm impartial about.

Winter >>> Summer

I have a hard time picking out a favorite event too. I love all men's downhill skiing events, followed by men's freestyle skiing, then bobsled, and luge.

I'm not really sure how a man running around a track at 15-20mph is more entertaining than a man flying down a mountain on skis going 80mph.

[Edited on February 10, 2010 at 4:10 PM. Reason : its probably the same reason so many ppl love NASCAR]

Wow I'm suprised at all the winter love. Summer is much more entertaining. Winter only has hockey. Bobsled & luge are cool to watch for like 2 runs, then you realize you are not seeing anything cool at all really, just something you wish you could be doing yourself.

I like the Summer olympics better just because there seems to be more sports that are entertaining (swimming, gymnastics, track and field, soccer, basketball, etc). Although speed skating and hockey are pretty bad ass at the winter olympics.

I think you mean horse racing

the 100m and 200m dashes are the shit...the 400m is good to a lesser extent

those events dont take 5 hours like a NASCAR race

^Team USA basketball plays for a gold medal all the time? People routinely break world records all the time?

I get that this is all based on preference, but because you see something more often seems like a stupid reason to not want to see it at the highest level

Wow this guy skiied that stretch of snow in 53 seconds? I guess thats supposed to be a good time? Hey look this guy did a few grabs when he jumped up in the air, and its not on TV all the time. Ok?

The reason we watch stuff like basketball on TV all the time, is because we like it because its a great sport, and it beats the shit out of watching snow skiing or ice skating

It's too bad that when they changed the 4 year cycle for the winter games that they didn't make it the year before the FIFA World Cup because then there would be a major sporting event every year. As it stands now...

2010: FIFA World Cup, Winter Olympics
2011: IRB Rugby World Cup, Women's FIFA World Cup (I don't care)
2012: Summer Olympics, Euro Cup
2013: I guess we have the CONCACAF Gold Cup and FIFA Confederations Cup, but having the winter games in the empty year would be nice.

^My point exactly! The Confederations Cup and Gold Cup are in 2013 when there is no Olympic games, or World Cup, so I guess those are the biggest international sporting events of 2013. There is also a World Baseball Classic, but no one seems to care too much about that either. Like I said, there is no major international sporting event in 2013.

Winter >>> Summer

I can't think of one event I watched this past Summer Olympics besides Phelps. And I only watched that once, only because of the hype. BAWWRRRRRRRING.

Olympic Hockey (The best hockey, period)
Skiing & Snowboarding
Bobsledding
Speedskating

Like Slave said, you don't see this shit on TV, except during the Olympics.

the only winter olympic sports that I don't care to watch are the trick events like halfpipe and then the cross country skiing shit. I can watch most of the skiing events, curling, the speed skating, HOCKEY, and bobsledding all day.

As far as the summer games I have zero interest in any of the track events, most of the field events, any of the judging sports. Only reason to watch any of the gymnastics is if the USA has a good chance to upset the chinese and russians.

winter.

summer olympics are for the most part boring. im usually outside doing something anyway during the summer. im usually indoors and can watch winter easier.

luge/bobsled/skeleton is more exciting than watching some jamaican run in a straight line

ski jump is more exciting than watching a guy run in a straight line jump over hurdles

speed skating is more exciting than watching a guy run slow as hell around a track

hockey is more exciting than basketball

(soccer is good in the summer olympics but its usually a crappier quality game with under 23's)

figure skating and gymnastics are equally gay

plus some of the downhill skiing events are fun to watch

curling is interesting for about 5 minutes. beats the pants off the 1 minute of interest i have in any marathon events or speedwalking

snowboarding is always exciting

the short distance swimming events are cool in the summer, but winter blows the pants off summer

I think it will grow over time, but how big of a deal is it in Europe and Africa? I still say it isn't as big of a deal as the World Cup's and Olympics.

Wow. I watched Phelps every time he won a gold medal and that was some of the most exciting sports I've ever watched in my life. To each his own I guess.

I'm gonna go with Winter.

I think the hockey tournament is the best event period in either Opympics. Speed skating is my second favorite, and curling is up there too. Honorable mention to bobsled and slalom.

In the summer the only events I really watch are swimming and the short (< 400m) track sprints. Gymnastics and volleyball are alright.

I find it hard to enjoy the Olympics nowadays. I guess it's because I don't have cable, so I'm treated to two events for the entire Olympics.

Summer:
Endless track/swimming. Quarter finals, semi finals, finals. Then repeated with an additional 50m tacked on.
Endless gymnastics. I'm sorry, but I don't really like sports where the judging is so subjective.

Winter:
Endless figure skating. Again, subjective.

The major networks coverage for the past few Olympics has been especially terrible. They show a three or four hour block at the end of the day and just repeat that exact same block immediately afterward. When I was a kid they had events going all day, not just during prime time, and there was more variety. I understand how that model doesn't pan out in the cable era.

Put me down for winter, just because as a kid I remember watching that event where they ski and take a break to shoot targets every once in a while. That was cooler than anything they did in the summer.

How big of a deal is the winter olympics in Africa? Obviously the WBC is not going to be popular in areas where the sport is not played, but WBC is important in the Western Hemisphere and in some Asian countries.
