While nice, I don't have an interest in the vertical slider of the Lightning. I basically just want the Thunder running WP7.

I really hope these are awesome, hopefully app development happens quickly.

My contract is up in January, I'll either be getting an Android or this. I'd like to have this just for compatability with xbox and zune pass.

There are going to be a shitton of apps available at launch.

Unlike with the Zune HD, MS did it right this time. They released the first SDK almost 6 months ago, and had OEM and major studios working on software last year. Then in July started handing out devices to developers, and have offered all kinds of incentives to get people in early.

Maybe the most surprising thing is that MS actually changed company policy allowing employees to "moonlight" to develop and sell their own WP7 apps without giving up their IP to MS.

I know there's already a HUGE number of apps just waiting for the marketplace doors to open to get verified and checked for distribution. I'd be surprised if the number of launch apps was below 20,000 or so.

So cool on RTM, but goddamnit look at this thing:

i mean what the fuck guys. A flip out speakerphone? I know microsoft doesn't have absolute control over the hardware but this is some shit you guys need to do your best to stop.

The worst thing would be if you guys spend all this time making a great os and then the hardware providers shit all over it with terrible linux phone designs.

Yea, I think what's going to make/break WP7 is:

a) whether the general public will accept a UI that's so different than what they're used to

b) how Microsoft gets major app-support to come on board quickly (Adobe, Google Apps, Pandora, Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, ESPN, Dropbox, Kindle, Skype... the apps people look for on iPhone/Android)

Things I'm sure they'll have going for them = games & music/video solution via Zune Marketplace / Xbox LIVE, along with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Bing integration.

Let's also hope the browser works better than their mobile browser of the past, as well as, some sort of remote control of Windows machines (via RDP, or possibly some sort of Media Center integration)?

I have had nothing but MS phones since like 2004 and I can't find it in myself to switch. Its something about the OS that draws me to it. Anyway, my contract has been expired for few months now and I can upgrade at will!

My "guesses":

nadda, don't know, launch, OS integrated, plethora at launch, launch, don't know, don't know, launch, launch

The only major mobile studio that isn't going to have anything on WP7 launch is EA. Pretty much everyone with any major mobile stake has been working on their platform apps for a while.

There will be dozens of these at launch. Here's one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atd57VS6JUw

I've seen a demo app that uses the phone as a trackpad + keyboard to control a paired PC, but I don't know if this will be possible in the RTM version or not. I suspect it will be though.

This is cool too, the LG Optimus 7 will be DLNA-certified, it's expected you'll be able to wirelessly push 720p video to your HDTV.
http://www.koreaittimes.com/story/10361/lg-introduces-new-era-entertainment-sharing

While AppleTV & iOS4.1 added this with AirPlay it's limited to 480p and AirPlay is another proprietary format, but not as widely used as DLNA. Granted DLNA isn't the best platform, I really loathe Apple when they don't accept a widely accepted industry standard and force upon users to buy other third-party hardware. If you buy Apple, you have to buy everything Apple approved, no choices. They are innovative, but they don't play nice with others. They should have gotten on the DLNA board and helped them set a good standard to begin with.

AFAIK that was a team morale event for the Windows Phone team, wasn't a public media thing.

I think that's a pretty cool way to get employees excited about the product they just shipped

bad shipped product event: dress up, wave signs, parade down campus, synchronized dancing, etc...

I'm kinda surprised Google Android team didn't send the WP7 team a cake to congratulate their RTM. Also wondering why it was only Apple & Blackberry and not Android?

Nope, it's pretty true. There's ~120 engineers for every designer in the company. Brilliant folks without question, but I'm continually amazed at how nerd-to-the-core the company generally is.

No CDMA til 2011? boooooo! same mistake Palm Pre made?

Quote :
"This may be missing a trick—getting to Verizon before Apple would surely be a good thing for Microsoft—but on the other hand, both iPhone and Android gained traction in the market without supporting the CDMA carriers from day one. Microsoft will be no different: Verizon availability is not enough to elevate a platform to greatness, and lack thereof is not enough to doom a platform to failure."

I don't know if I agree with this. Android didn't really "gain traction" until the Droid & Eris came to Verizon. In fact AT&T (USA GSM leader) didn't have an Android phone until this last summer. I DO agree that it makes sense to make a GSM phone first since it's global, but I would have preferred to launch both simultaneously, or at least very close to each other. Let's hope it's Jan 1. 2011.

Youtube, Netflix, Seasmic, I've been impressed with the demos.

Actually it's not, if it was I'm sure you would have seen everyone leave Verizon and go to AT&T for the iPhone, it's the biggest base of non-iPhone users. I highly doubt starting at AT&T where the competition is the stiffest is going to help gain any traction.

My understanding is this is purely an engineering time constraint. Gsm is the worlds format and it simply doesn't make sense to go CDMA first from a business standpoint. Also there's no way in hell ms could have pulled off engineering qualifications testing and metrics for two technologies at once at launch.

Keep in mind this went from 0 to launch in basically a years time

Bump, to go ahead a warm this thread up for Steve Balmer's official announcement on tomorrow. I am serious thinking about foregoing my Windows Phone brand loyalty and go to Android if the WP7 takes to long to come to the CDMA network.

Not a surprise, they said very early on they weren't going to have it. It was one of the first questions people asked. I mean they reported this in March

The problem with Apple was that they had NO PLANS to implement. Microsoft SAID they were going to add it.

Dang man, like the first two pages of Engadget is all windows phone 7 stuff.

I'm STOKED about the AT&T U-verse announcement. That's badass. It almost makes your phone a bit like a walking DVR box. It remains to be seen how well it works in practice, but it would be pretty damn awesome to get home, dock your phone and turn on your TV to start watching the latest episode of House M.D.

I have no idea which one to get.

Definitely one with a SD card, that will make a big difference (even though they are one-time, non-removeable storage, still a shitton cheaper than the bigboy iPhone upgrades).

Debating whether to get one with a keyboard, or just a touchscreen, and whether to go with a regular or large screen. Ahh choices, choices.

It was also cool to head that Copy & Paste will be coming early next year. No rest for the weary I guess

^^potentially all of them, possibly none. http://www.intomobile.com/2010/10/12/windows-phone-7-memory/

memory cards arent user-replaceable, but I'm hoping they will be unofficially supported to swap out on first usage.

Although to be fair, I never maxed out my 8gb iPhone 3G or my 16gb iPhone 3GS, so I doubt that I'll have much of a memory issue anyway.

today's the day

i think i'll stop by the at&t store on my way home from work today

i switched from iphone to a droid (samsung captivate) several weeks ago, but i'm not 100% sold on the droid. even though they've been out for well over a year, it still seems rough around the edges. i'm sure WP7 will have its rough areas too, but i might be willing to give it a shot, if anything, to get a feel for whether it's a viable alternative

so i finally made it out to the store this morning to check one out in person

overall, i was really impressed. moreso than i expected. particularly with the browser, which i expected to be the dealbreaker. no telling how it'll hold up over time, but i really liked it.

also, the sales guy mentioned that they sold 3x as many WP7 as androids. i find that hard to believe, so take it with a grain of salt
