i drove one on a short road trip
it's a decent little car
feels much more like a midsize inside than a compact
handling and pickup are nothing special, but not awful
it's a little buzzy at highway speed because the engine is so small
can't comment on cargo space because it was a one day trip and we didn't pack anything so i didn't even look back there 2/24/2010 5:39:07 PM |

If she's buying it to save money, she's got the wrong idea.
It's much more cost effective to get something much cheaper that gets almost as good of gas mileage.
A Toyota Yaris, for example, costs around $12k and gets 29/36 mpg.
A Toyota Prius costs $23k and gets 48/51 mpg.
To make up that extra $11,000 you'd have to drive a LOT of miles for a LONG time. The Yaris is a much better deal for fuel economy and overall cost.
Then again, if she's just driving it to make a statement and be an environmentalist, the Prius is perfect. 2/24/2010 11:03:48 PM |

you would have to drive approximately 72k miles in the Prius before you broke even with the $11k premium. Get a smaller vehicle if economy is an issue. Since there's "concern with Toyota" going on right now, if the Yaris or Carolla doesn't appeal, there's always the Honda Fit and Civic to consider.

72k miles isn't far. Try to make the same argument having driven both cars. It isnt the same....at all.
Look, i want to be a hard ass like the rest of you. Hell I even want to believe the bogus shit spit out by the CNW. As an engineer i took 3 minutes of my time to actually look through their "data". I'm not going to spill the beans. Read it. It's.....yeah..... 2/24/2010 11:51:32 PM |

Yeah I've only put about 12k on my RX-8 in the past two years. It has 33000 miles and is a 2005. My work commute is 100 miles a week, and I don't drive any more than 10 miles extra on the weekend. I also bike to work during the nice weather. 2/25/2010 9:28:12 AM |

Not really. If you're concerned about raping the environment (mining precious metals), energy consumption, and CO2 footprints most hybrids are crappy choices.
I'm not really concerned with any of those things, I just dislike hybrids.

Regardless of the factual statistics on the Prius, it still is the car of choice for people that just want to appear like they are conscious about the environment, which is why celebrities drive them too.2/25/2010 3:29:28 PM |

Probably because every Prius since 2001 isn't a compact car.

Oh shit! lmfao. I was reading this while also doing my ECE 200 circuits class hw. somehow I think a previous calculation got included in my math to determine how far you'd have to go to make up the $$$..
The appropriate number is roughly 3800 gallons of gasoline. Given that the Prius can go an estimated 48mpg, that's ~183,000 miles. Not 72k.

FWIW look up the rated service life of the batteries in a prius (mileage), then divide that by mpg. Next divide the cost of the battery by that figure. Then add that figure to the cost of a gallon of gas and see how efficient you think the vehicle really is.
This is only one thing to think about in addition the the premium you will pay to own one. You'd be better off with a civic imo.
If she's trying to be environmentally conscious... well lookup the battery production plants.
If she says anything about it being safe ><
Don't forget all the smug she'll release into the environment after she gets one.

it's better for the environment than that hybrid and gets pretty decent fuel mileage... and it happens to be a pretty nice car
of course you gotta spend $texas for it... 2/26/2010 12:51:57 AM |

Toyota claims the batteries should last the life of the vehicle and they offer an 8 year warranty iirc. They're around $3k if you do have to replace them, but unless you're planning on putting 250,000 miles on the thing it's unlikely to be an issue. 2/26/2010 12:56:10 AM |
