Bombadil is my favorite next to Avett Brothers. They were label-mates at one point (Avett Brothers took off to better things I suppose), but they're pretty goddamn different. Actually pretty difficult for me to choose between them--but I'm definitely a lot more invested in Avett Brothers. I can actually afford their concerts and I've hung out with them after concerts in the past. A really fucking great bunch of guys, and they're kind of on hiatus right now--which hopefully will lift soon.

Ryan Adams
Swift
Hopesfall (early Hopesfall that is)
BTBAM

Hard for me to put the Avett Brothers here (while they do deserve it) because I grew up with those guys. Interestingly, Seth and I had a conversation about this very topic last week, and he thinks Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown is the best thing (aside from Doc Watson) to come out of NC.

ive posted my list of favorite NC bands in too many threads so maybe I'll refrain here
and I think I even started a very similar thread 4 years ago or so. Who knows, if I get bored, I might copy and paste my list from the last NC music related thread from chit chat last year.

pretty sure bombadil is on a bit of a hiatus as well. their main guy has some sort of major carpal tunnel tendonitis that kept them from tour after the release of their last album. sounded like a sad story. but i don't really know the details.

details:

Quote :
"Needless to say, this brings us great sadness. We tried to limit Daniel's movements on stage, but it seems that even sitting in a chair and simply singing on stage was impeding his recovery. At the end of the day, we did not feel that it was in the artistic spirit of the band to continue and play shows without him.

It is not clear when we will be able to perform again--some doctors say that a 3 month break would suffice, while others forecast a 2-year recovery period. But in the meantime, we'll be writing new songs and keeping you up to date of our activities. We see this merely as a road bump on the long road that is this band, and as soon as Daniel is able to perform music again, we'll be visiting a town near you.

These guys went to my high school. I'll admit I was shocked as shit to see they were still performing when I saw them on a playlist in Independent a couple months ago

^^^Yea, I had dinner with them after their last public concert. Daniel has such bad joints in his wrist that he wouldn't brush his teeth, let alone play like four different instruments. They never really were clear about how long he'd need to recover, which is why I was pretty bummed about it. I keep correspondence with them in emails--they're more than happy to talk to fans.

They're one of those bands for me that sounds great on an album but just explodes on stage--they're an acquired taste but one that I have. Their extreme lack of pretentiousness with their music is refreshing.

the first time i saw them live, it was a real mess. but they were much better a year or two later. too bad to hear about those problems right after they put out a solid album.
