I got a significant promotion recently.

It came with a significant (net) pay cut.


Supposedly, this will be addressed in the next quarter. However, I have this sinking feeling that I'm going to be screwed badly.

I recently got a promotion and a $15k raise.

Some industries are recession proof.

But my GF on the other hand was unemployed for almost a year. Finally got a job with double the responsibility of her last job with half the pay. So I feel your pain.

craigslist is full of undervalued payment offers. don't read too much into that. unless you're desperate, just ignore the low offers from recruiters too.

I got a 20% raise this year. I started off at 33k, now im at almost 40k.

I think you have to take a bad job offer and hope for the best sometimes.

^^ yeah, the staffing industry is REALLY hurting right now. Mainly because companies are cutting back on spending, and it is way cheaper for them to hire someone themselves rather than go through a staffing agency. So any offer you get from a staffing agency or outside recruiter is almost guarnateed to be a lowball in the current state of our economy.

worldwide our cost of living increases were frozen last year. Kind of got lucky that I got a title change/upgrade last year because, although I was hoping to get the bump from both, one was better than none. COL increases were reinstated this year effective next paycheck though

In the past year and a half I have gone from getting a 7% 'deferred pay' for almost a year, to going back up to my normal salary + the 7% back pay + an additional 5.5% raise.

I guess good things happen when the start up you work for gets acquired by a much larger company.

I, too, received a substantial increase in salary, improved work environment, better benefits, and better job during the worst recession since the great depression. Sometimes individual effort pays off despite a general downswing.

Well I got no raise this year for the first time since I have been here, but seeing as my salary doubled in the first 3 years I guess I cant complain too much. The fact that I have a job making a fair amount right now keeps me happy and feeling lucky.

my company had a 33% staff reduction and everyone left took a 5% paycut across the board last year. we've actually had a pretty strong 2010 (as compared to 2009, at least) but our sales are still down ~35% compared to "normal". in our first quarter meeting yesterday they basically said they aren't considering re-instating the 5% until they have confirmed evidence of sustained increased sales. so...paycut and no raises for at least another year i'm guessing.

The funding dried up for the position I was in the first half of last year, and the job I took to replace it was a ~11% pay cut. (This was after taking a 1.5% pay cut along with all state employees in March). And that was the better of two offers.

guess it depends on what relation you are to pharma Pharma / Biotech expansion slowed down to a grinding halt over the past two years. I work in Eng./Construction and that was our office's biggest money-maker for years and then it literally just went completely flat. Luckily we've had a lot of other stuff that has up-ticked during the recession (esp government work )

I got a nice promotion last fall that included a small raise in my salary. Best part was that I got put on our bonus system which made it a big raise in my take home pay. New job is more stressful, but I am just glad to be working and making a good living.

Actually, if healthcare bill passes, it increases our customer base by millions.... far less than the concessions we've made to fill the donut hole in medicare.

Depends on the particular pharma/biotech and the strength of their pipeline (patent expirations, etc).

^^ Yea I was talking in general as far as the type, but I am coming from the engineering/construction side. What I meant by the perspective is that, while you may be doing fine on the production and sales side, the expansion went from firing on all cylinders to barely there. Any type of pharma or biotech plant or client, you name it and we've built at least 1 probably. But it has been realllllllly slow the last 2 years in general. The economy didn't help and then a lot of the consolidation and X company buying Y company hurt too. Of the few that have come our way for bids, we have lost a lot at the bidding phase because we are generally just more expensive (but for good reason) and our competitors (who might not be as diversified) are just starving for work and bidding super low.
