"ESPN doesn't give a shit about the NHL: Perhaps this isn't shocking to most of the audience, but the extent to which The Worldwide Leader ignores hockey is astounding. Despite being in the middle of the regular season, the sport was granted all of 13.5 minutes, or less than three percent of the content. That's less time than was devoted to the MLB, a sport in the middle of an offseason with few newsworthy events since Albert Pujols joined the Angels in December. The NHL is the only major sport that does not have a television deal with ESPN."

Does ESPN have to pay Versus or FSN for using their NHL footage?

I'm not saying they aren't ignoring the NHL, but I don't recall them getting much coverage even when the games were carried on ESPN.

If they didn't need it for an excuse to get Barry Melrose on air, I'm convinced they'd drop coverage entirely. Its so far below the other three major US sports on the national radar that I doubt anyone would miss it.

because they own the rights to some of those soccer highlights

that and they are trying to promote soccer seeing as how they are broadcasting Euro 2012 this year

News broadcasts (and Sportscenter qualifies as one I believe) can usually use highlights as needed during their broadcasts. There are usually stipulations on this however (no more than X minutes of footage, "Courtesy" bug throughout clip, etc). In a lot of cases, highlights cant be used until the broadcast is over (ie, you wont see Sunday Night Football highlights on Sportscenter until SNF is over).

My guess is the reason that you see so little NHL highlights on ESPN is because they are more interested in promoting sports that will give them higher ratings...why give you a reason to turn to NBCSN when ESPN has NBA and college basketball you should be watching?

as the "resident hockey guy" at ESPN even John Buccigross has become neutered from anything to do with hockey.

The network is merely the world wide leader in sports they own. watch what happens to the over saturated Nascar coverage as soon as that partnership ends.

it's funny, they dial it back for the parts of the season broadcast by Fox and TNT. then as soon as their TV deal sets in it's full force again.

but Nascar as a whole is going the way of the buffalo, but that's for another topic.

ESPN is still pissed that they got over-bid (basically weren't willing to pay a certain amount of money) for hockey games. If you've noticed, it's been this way every since they lost their hockey package. They are trying to teach the NHL a lesson by saying that hockey needs ESPN.

You guys really need to read, "Those Guys Have All the Fun."

I'm sure SportsCenter covers events on ESPN networks more thoroughly to promote themselves, but it's also easier and cheaper for them. It takes less time and money to show a few highlights of something you've already paid to cover.

Stop talking about the LeBron dunk. In every segment, all they do is say "eh, it wasn't that great" but make sure to spend 10 minutes of every hour talking about it. WTF!?!

So Jim Rome's last show was on Friday. Apparently he's moving to CBS to host a show on CBS Sports Network and a "Real Sports" type show on Showtime.
