Or more like FTElectricalGremlins probably, but I like them anyway.

I'm actually trying to find a ride up there to pick up that car, and I'm not even kidding. I LOVE those things! Honestly, I'm surprised anybody on TWW would like that car, other than myself...

They're not very common, true. But I have a soft spot for 80's Audi products (and their VW cousins in this case), and that car is basically the 4000 Quattro Avant that never was, plus the Quantum just may be more attractive than the 4000.

Cool find, hopefully you can actually pick it up!

because after driving many other things, the e46 was boring as shit. lazy, a heavyweight, didn't like to rev, with an obtrusive interior.

if i were looking for a better version of the same car i would get a 996 hands down, and still might. however, the 996 is even less practical. the e36 M3 is an option if I just decide to a cheaper route.

the other 3 cars are all pratical. 4 doors with a large boot...so on and so forth. they're also easily made faster. no i will not be ricing out whatever i get. but a mbc and maybe 1 or 2 other things would go in anything with a turbo.

the 335i is more of a throw back to e36s than an e46 imo. it feels much smaller than the e46 did. the issue here is the pontential to go through many fuel injectors and fuel pumps. bmw will fill a warranty claim at the drop of a hat though. but i would rather not have to spend much time messing with such. also i think of every car on this list the 335i will take the biggest depreciation hit. they've already taken a massive hit, so they're guaranteed to slow down, but they're a dime a dozen really.

the sti is much more livable than the evo. the issue here is that it's just that, not an evo. i think i'll always have the "should have" complex here. i also thing that when the time comes, the evo would be much easier to turn. i plan on keeping it damn close to stock. and keeping and parts a swap out. a stock evo or sti is really desirable. these are both still boy racer.

While I haven't driven either, I figured the E46 M3 loved to rev, given the 8000 limit? And it's pretty widely known that the new 3 Series is heavier than the old one...so I don't think you'd want a new Bimmer.

I say go for the Porsche. You're young and single (i assume) and it has a back seat you can use for cargo in addition to the trunk. What else you need?

Also, do you plan to track the car?

[Edited on March 10, 2010 at 12:02 PM. Reason : track?]

the e46 is a sheep in wolves clothing. yes it revs high, but it doesn't like to imo. in 1st and 2nd and 3rd gear when you take it above 6k rpm it just gets really angry at you. it's basically like "wtf is going on" to the driver.

the e90 might be bigger sure, but it doesn't feel like it...and that's what it's all about isn't it? the e90 compared to the M didn't offer the same driver to road connection, but it felt more nimble and happier to be taken into the upper 1/3 of the tac honestly.

yes i'm young, and for all intents and purposes of buying a car i am single.

i would say i plan on doing 2-3 track events in the upcoming season. the evo and the 996 are the obvious choices here. the 335i has an open diff. this is morally wrong imo. no rwd/front engine car that has such performance and is newer than ~2006 should lack an lsd. this sti is just plain sub par to the evo.

I say 911. It'll make you a better driver at the track as you learn how to handle it, as opposed to the Evo that will make you think you're a better driver (just b/c the car does it all on its own).

Plus you'll have a nicer interior.

(and let me know what track events you set your sights on)

if i were going to buy something in the 20s i'd pick up a nice 996 or bust my ass trying to find a cayman S under 30. if i were going the evo/sti route i'd shoot for spending <$17,000 to avoid taking a big depreciation hit. i'd prolly avoid the 335is in the interest of not getting raped when it came time to sell.

the real solution is to shrink about 5 inches and buy an elise!

the real real solution is for e90/e92s to get cheaper faster.

i'd still test drive a cts-v though.

or an s2000 club racer!

Your list looks VERY similar to mine for when I get back from this next deployment (except that I wouldn't get an STi, and there are some other things I'd consider, although my real short list has all of the other cars you mentioned).

I was thinking 135i, but after driving one, it doesn't feel enough different from a 335i to warrant the hit in practicality. I was expecting it to be a little more hardcore.

Please for the love of all that is sacred, do not compare my beloved 911 to an e46 M3.

I keep thinking about this, I want to, I really want to keep owning different cars and the cheapness of other platforms is appealing, but I just can't picture not getting into a 911, often. The thing is, I don't know if a catastrophic failure really will happen at some point, but they're very robust, simple and easy to work on thus far.

As for tracking, the EVO is a fun and fast car, and it will help you improve in some aspects as a good driver, but it will not dissuade you from bad habits and it will mask your mistakes to a great extent. All modern cars will do this to a degree, but the EVO is somewhat ridiculous. Man, I did have fun driving that 8 with you though...

i agree with this, but $28.5k is very different from $21.5k

clarkson is my height and is much more round. he can get in and out of one...sort of? and i'm so sexy at 6'4". for seriously though elises need to just get bigger.

you can't come up with a more true statement that this.

The first gen. Cayman (S) had some track reliability issues with brake cooling and oil starvation, fwiw. I've seen a few Cayman S listed for ~$35k. From what I've read, the revised 2009+ models have fixed these issues and is more or less bulletproof per reports from those who track/race them. A few track days here and there might not hurt the car depending on how you drive versus someone who uses the vehicle soley for track events, fwiw.

GL, I support the 996 decision... I need to drive (versus ride) one someday..

A 2009+ MY Cayman S will be mine at some point this decade And you can find 2006-2008 models for $30k all day long. But you'll be down 30hp as we as a few other things, as mentioned by Stephen.

I fail to see how the Cayman looks goofy! I'd say its lines don't flow as well from a side angle as the 911 but other than the side profile it is damn sexy and has some real flowing fenders.

I mean, let's not forget the fact it's basically a modern day NSX but is faster and cheaper.

The first shot of that black Cayman is very attractive! Man, wheels certainly make a big difference.

I used to like NSX's quite a bit. I'm a bit surprised to see them worth so much still, though they are cool cars. I hate how Honda makes an awesome car, then just lets it age and age w/out enough of an update to just fall from grace...

In other news, I really, really, really like my 996, and feel happy to own such a vehicle...

I really, really want a Cayman S.

I'm not totally opposed to owning another 2-seater, either...but the problem is that, if I get orders back to Pensacola like I want, I'll realistically need something with more seats, as I'll have my daughter half the time, then.

OK, again, no problem...I can buy a second car (or truck, more likely--probably a Wrangler) with a backseat. However, I'd be driving the Jeep during the 50% of the time when I had my daughter...the other 50% of the time would be split between the sports car and however many motorcycles I end up buying when I get back. (at least 2, maybe eventually 3). I just can't justify spending $30k on something that only gets driven a few days per month--probably the least out of everything in the stable.

Therefore, if I get a Porsche, a 911 (996) is much more likely. It's family-friendly.

TKE-Teg summarized the Cayman S VERY well...

Ironically, a Cayman S (especially the revised 2009+ YM) catches my eyes faster than the 997 (well, except a 997 GT3). I may own one in the future... I go back and forth on it for reasons that are rediculous, however, it's definitely on my awesome list...

The picture you have of the 996 is very unflattering. The white e36 M looks hot, though it needs 8.5inch wide DSIIs all around, not the 5 spoke wheels -which I think really don't look good on that car.
