They did the right thing.

1. they didn't discriminate
2. they are putting education first instead of fostering a media circus.

nip the issue in the bud. Screw everybody.

I see their reasoning. It would be a slight conundrum if a lesbian won title of "Prom King".

Help me understand this. She told the school she was going with a girl and wearing a tux. The school says no. She calls the ACLU and they go to court. The school cancels the prom for everyone. that about right?

While it sucks for her, I feel worse for the rest of the students. Just show up alone and have your GF do the same.

I think the reason they cancelled the prom is basically because they didn't want to get sued, and they didn't want to fight in court. They may have still thought their stance was right, but didn't have the funds or inclination to test it in court.

I don't agree with the school system perspective, but this may also be an issue that is better dealt with over the course of several months of discussion and mediation, instead of forcing both sides to work it out and be happy in the deadline leading up to prom. This solution, while not ideal, may end up being better in the long run for all sides, because it gives them more time to find common ground.

(And I think we all know that this would have been the BEST PROM EVER! If my prom had lesbians, I probably would have remembered it much more fondly.)

The girls were trying to make a statement and the school did exactly what they wanted them to do.

Also, their mastery of using ironic clothing to make a statement at such a young age is sure to win them points when they're unemplyed hipsters in a few years.

Here is the memo the school circulated:

Quote :
" Each Junior/Senior may invite one guest. Your guest should meet the following criteria:

* may be in grade 9 or 10 at IAHS
* may be in grade 9 - 12 at another high school
* may be a college age student
* must be of the opposite sex
"

Gay couples weren't allowed to attend regardless of dress or ACLU involvement.

Wow. What a dumb school.

I mean, the 16/17 year old girls can bring their 22 year old boyfriend (who we all know is going to slam their pussy after or during the prom), and a girl or boy cannot bring a member of the same sex with them?

That is fucking stupid.

What does the school care if a girl brings her girlfriend or a guy brings his boyfriend? If it bothers you that much, don't look at them. If you're going to let them bother your night, then it's YOU who has the issue, not them. What is the school afraid of? A homophobic father/mother not allowing their "darling" little whore go to the prom with their 22 year old boyfriend?

It seems to me that the school needs to get their priorities straight.

For the Mississippi high school I read that the school board is encouraging members of the community to organize a private prom so that they can exclude the gay couple with no legal worries. In response there is now an effort to raise money for a gay inclusive prom. Unfortunately this seems to be a growing trend of gay people having to have separate proms.

Growing up in rural NC, long before I was out of the closest, when there were few openly gay people at my high school, I was friends with all kinds of closed-minded people to put it lightly. One day I was even invited in on the plans of a group of guys who were getting together to plan an attack/stabbing on one gay guy if he did end up bringing a date to prom.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/24/magazine/24prom-t.html?_r=1

Quote :
"Racially segregated proms have been held in Montgomery County — where about two-thirds of the population is white — almost every year since its schools were integrated in 1971. Such proms are, by many accounts, longstanding traditions in towns across the rural South, though in recent years a number of communities have successfully pushed for change. When the actor Morgan Freeman offered to pay for last year’s first-of-its-kind integrated prom at Charleston High School in Mississippi, his home state, the idea was quickly embraced by students — and rejected by a group of white parents, who held a competing “private” prom. (The effort is the subject of a documentary, “Prom Night in Mississippi,” which will be shown on HBO in July.) The senior proms held by Montgomery County High School students — referred to by many students as “the black-folks prom” and “the white-folks prom” — are organized outside school through student committees with the help of parents. All students are welcome at the black prom, though generally few if any white students show up. The white prom, students say, remains governed by a largely unspoken set of rules about who may come."

Way to go Mississippi.

I agree with cynosural that they did the right thing.

Obviously, the especially right thing to do is not to have a policy at all.

But if an ultraconservative administration has put the policy in place, schools should cancel the prom every year.

Just say, "Sorry, folks, we can't have a prom because our prom policy is discriminatory, and we don't want to risk a lawsuit and media circus. The only way we can ever have a prom again is if we change the policy."

If people want to organize a private prom, that's their business. They best not be thinking they gonna sell tickets and promote that shit on campus.

Quote :
" Martin asked his principal this year if he could take another male to his senior prom, set for April 17.

At first school officials told the 18-year-old that the town of Cochran, with a population of 5,200, wasn’t ready for it.

The high school only had a policy that barred bringing a date older than the age of 21, so school officials subsequently told Martin they granted his request.

...

But because of the media attention, Martin’s parents have kicked him out and the teen is staying with a friend, he said.

Martin said he pushed to take his boyfriend to the dance after hearing about a girl in Mississippi who asked to take her girlfriend to the prom."

Kind of a reverse situation, the school is allowing it, but the 'rents are kicking the kid out. But it had a bit of tie in to the Mississippi story so I thought it was worth posting here.

That's pretty bad. You have to wonder what kind of conversations went on between the kid and his parents that resulted in them kicking him out. They'd have to be shitty parents to not support him through this.

"My Nephew was outted, and then kicked out of school

Wed Mar 03, 2010

I am just beside myself tonight. This afternoon I got a frantic call from my sister in North Carolina. Her 18 year old son was outted at his school today. She had expected he was gay, but due to her religious beliefs, never wanted to believe it. Well today, he was outed at his private Christian school. The principal called him in to his office to ask if the allegations against him were true, and he admitted that they were. He was immediately kicked out of school. He's a senior and was scheduled to graduate with honors in just 4 months. Can they do this?

The whole thing started with some bigoted holier than thou kid playing a prank. My nephew is on two sports teams at school and is very athletic. Nobody would consider him the stereotypical gay guy. Apparently a classmate thought it would be funny to play a prank on him and signed up with a fake Facebook account. On that Facebook account, he pretended to be gay. He contacted my nephew and one thing led to another and my nephew admitted to this "fake" person that he was gay. Well, that kid took a screen shot, printed it out and showed it to several people at school. My nephew apparently then said he knew it was a prank, but the damage was done. He was outted. The school has a strict policy about "alternative lifestyles" and he was called in to the principal's office"

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/3/3/842722/-My-Nephew-was-outted,-and-then-kicked-out-of-school-

^^^There are plenty of such parents. This kids parents gave all his possessions to charity and insisted he undergo religious-based gay-corrective therapy to make him straight again.

Any parent that kicks their child out of their own house for being gay deserves scorn and public shaming. No system of values can be used to provide cover to parents that would go out of their way to harm their child during their upbringing.

^^^I wonder what school that was. My sister went to a private school here in Raleigh and was kicked out for chewing gum, and another was kicked out because she buzzed the underside of her hair (it was too poofy for her). I'd hate to see the reaction to a gay kid.

kicking your child out of the house basically says that you don't accept their choices, and aren't going to. in some cases i can see that as being the right option, but with something like this, it just tells the world that you are a bigot.

it sucks, but i'm sure the kid is better off outside of a home environment that is negative towards his sexual perspective.

"A lesbian teen who successfully sued her Mississippi school for the right to bring her girlfriend to prom was left out and was instead directed to a "fake prom" on Friday, according to The Advocate.

Constance McMillen, her date and just a handful of others, including two classmates with learning disabilities, attended the dance in Fulton, Mississippi while most of her other classmates from Itawamba Agricultural High School reportedly partied at a separate prom that McMillen was not invited to. "

I wonder if the other prom was a private one set up by the parents. If so, I can't believe nobody pulled her aside and told her what was happening. How unpopular do you have to be to not know about something like that?

If it was set up by the school I think she has pretty strong grounds for a discrimination lawsuit.

Now I know this thread is all about the 'rabble, rabble, society is bad', but might you maybe consider that the other students did not exclude her from the private prom because of her lifestyle choices?
Perhaps it was because her little tirade got their original prom canceled. Or that she took the last group of people trying to organize a prom to court.

Just saying. Getting your school prom cancelled is effectively a social kamikaze.
