Back from spending a week on EI

Big Oak Drive In--shrimp burger was good but OMG trying to get out of that parking lot during lunchtime during the week

Kathryn's--So good. Ate there on our last night. Really wish we had tried it earlier b/c I would have gone back many many times.

Village Market deli--Great Boar's Head sandwiches.

I didn't get to try Chowdaheads. Wish I had.

Heading down this weekend. Anyone been to the new Shark's Den restaurant/bar? It's located in the Emerald Plantation shopping center near the movie theater. Trying to find a good place to catch the NCSU game on Saturday and found this place while doing a web search. And it appears to be co-owned by a guy I went to elementary & middle school with.

Ryan, the General Manager, is an NCSU grad. His Dad owns it, looks kind of like Ric Flair. His dad used to own Punky's up near Flipper's, but I think it's called Paddy's now.

^ We always go to Ballyhoos if there is a game to watch. They have a ton of TVs, and a pretty decent beer selection. Never been to Shark's Den

I got to Atlantic Beach yesterday and last night the storm was insane. We are staying on the beach and I couldn't believe how hard the wind was blowing and the rain was coming down. No tornado (or sharknado) sightings though. Good thing too because we weren't exactly in a place you can take cover.

It was insane!!!

I knew there was going to be bad weather, so I decided to stay up, just in case. I am happy that I did.
My roommate and I and a friend were hanging out on the front porch. It was rainy and windy, but nothing too crazy. Then all of a sudden the wind switched directions and got crazy strong. At the exact same moment all three of our phones went off saying there was a tornado warning and to take cover now. Well I decided before we took cover I would check and see if there was anything saying where it was, because if it was on the other side of the county no reason to get all but hurt.
Right about the time that I was reading that it was heading to MHC at 45 mph transformers started to blow down the road and our power went out.
I said fuck this, grabbed my beer, and ran and sat in my closet for half an hour.
In all reality, I don't know if I had ever been that scared in my life. I have been through plenty of hurricanes, but something about this tornado sneaking up on me really got to me.

It was less than a mile from my house. I am very thankful that it didn't get any closer. Although, I really hate it for the people that did get injured, were displaced, and suffered damage to their houses.

I'm sure many of y'all know Els Drive In. The big old oak trees. They're gone. Luckly El's is still there.

Yeah there's something so very different about tornados over hurricanes. When the April tornado two years ago came through Raleigh, it was less than a mile from my place and I've never been that convinced I was actually going to be hit by a tornado.

...of course I wasn't, though.

September, at the latest.

There's never been a lot as far as restaurants in EI. Kathryns is my jam, but other than that you gotta head back over the bridge or at least down to/past Salter Path.

Oh yeah, Ballyhoos did close, a lot of people hit up the Shark's Den instead. It's good. I like Rucker John's, but that's nothing new.

moving here in ~2 weeks, heading up Thursday to stay a couple nights at the new place and check things out.

gonna do some surf/pier fishing and try out some restaurants I guess.

Haven't spent a lot of time on EI but it beats the hell out of where I am coming from. Driving from Halifax County to EI was freaky, looking at all the water that has basically overtaken half of eastern NC. Oddly enough there was 0 damage to my house on the beach or to the island at all.

I am sure summer is different but it seems so laid back there right now(which is fine by me). I'll be riding solo during the week but will have my 2 boys(4 and 5) during most weekends... I am sure we will find plenty to keep occupied, but anyone have any MUST SEE/DO things? I want to cut loose a little when my kids aren't there, but I am not sure if there is anyone between 25-35 on the island, hah. Where do people my age go in the area??

that is probably the worst beach you could go to for the 25-35 age group. There is some decent nightlife on the waterfront in Beaufort and Morehead, but it's a really long cab ride if you don't have a DD.

Morehead waterfront, Beaufort, Cape Lookout, the aquariums, The forts...Blackbeard and the museums around.

You're out of luck really for most of the restaurants. Just remember the low of the winter sucks but the Summers there are amazing.

Yeah if you wanna drink in Morehead and Beaufort you're gonna want a DD. It would be a $50 or $60 cab ride, maybe a little less for Uber...but still.

Granted it's a lot less than a DUI...which they LOVE giving out around here. Don't even chance it.

Carteret County has one of the lowest DWI conviction rates in the state. Getting busted is still gonna cost you though.

Random question, have a wedding to be in the weekend of the 17th of June...anyone have a place down there they would rent out on the cheap? say $100 a night or so...two nights needed.

We sold our house down there and I can't use it anymore

If you're looking to spend around $100 or less during June, you're going to need to look for places on the mainland. I know of some places in Morehead that might be good for your budget, but that might be too far away for you.

I'm glad that EI is getting more grocery options than just the one Food Lion and the Lowes Foods before the bridge

Follow-up: My buddy was there last weekend and says there's a new(ish?) restaurant on the island that has a rooftop bar. Can anyone confirm/refute that claim?
