^^ agreed, looked like a clean block. I think he could have gotten in the game earlier than he did. We were up by 20 with like 5 mins left - prob would have been safe.

I admit I was skeptical reading on TWW that he doesn't give a shit. But I'm starting to see it more and it's frustrating. Even if it was garbage time, he let that one guard slip by him for a reverse layup. He followed him under the basket and was in position to block it and if anything contest the shot, but he did nothing.

^^ its not even those points that concern me the most - its the fouls. All he has done is come into games and rack up fouls. He will be Howell 2.0 if we rely on him regularly.

Granted - he had a great ~10min stretch @Wake. Also a few other decent defensive stretches this year e.g. - where he had all ball and still called for the foul... his footwork is so miserable he will always get made to look the chump against other talented bigs.

What are the odds he will improve vs. giving up to find another 'project' player with more upside?

There's no reason to talk about Vandenberg giving up his to make room for other projects. He only has one year left. If Brown and Leslie leave, including Vandenberg we have 8 guys on scholarship for next year at this point. What's the max? 12-13? No way we'll sign more than 2-3 more guys for next year.

not saying to drop his scholly - agreed we will need the depth. Just give the start and bulk of playing time to a higher-upside JuCo/transfer FWD instead of him...

We should most definitely drop him from the roster. He is a total disaster. Should have done it this year and maybe that would have helped us keep Painter or Harris.

Well, we're in no danger of being short on scholarships this coming season. If Zo and CJL go pro and there are no transfers, our scholly players in 13-14 will be:

Anya
Washington
Barber
Lewis
Purvis
Warren
Turner
Vandenberg

That's 8 scholly players by my count. Vandy isn't taking up a scholly that could be used on another player...we aren't gonna sign 5 more players to this class. And I'm not defending Vandy...he's awful. But cutting him to free up a scholarship serves absolutely no purpose...we are not strapped for scholarships this year.

Even with Vandy, we've still got 4 or 5 scholarships open for practice players if Zo and CJL go the NBA.

But I do agree with you...Vandy is awful and really brings little (if anything) to the table.

like it or not guys, if we don't get another one or two big guys for 2013, we're gonna probably see a lot of vandy (if he doesn't transfer), since we'll only have two freshmen and warren in the front court, and I don't think warren would thrive there. while i'd like to think that the freshmen will adjust fairly quickly, that's certainly not guaranteed.

No matter how raw or uncoordinated Anya and Washington are, they quite literally can't be more useless than Vandy and we either need to go small ball or go with the freshmen even if it means growing pains.
