same for me. This is the 2nd time I have had this issue. Happened around 2005 as well.

But yea hotmail sucks but I've had hotmail for such a long time that I have kept it alive. I have a gmail account as well that I use for my professional related stuff but I've never taken the time to switch everything over to gmail. If I am going to get a Droid later this year, that might finally give me the push to change my email address everywhere that I actually want to receive mail from heh.

^^^can you not set up a rule to forward everything to your gmail account? that's what i've done with all of my old accounts.. then obviously for bank accounts or cc stuff you can just change them over

No, I don't think so. I have looked several times and it always tells me:

"You can forward your mail to one other e-mail address that ends in hotmail.com, msn.com, live.com, or is part of Windows Live Custom Domains"

Basically it forces you to forward to another one of their email addresses. Trust me, I know that gmail is tons better. I have 2 gmail accounts (including one that I give out/use for anything professional) that I use in addition to the hotmail, but because of the lack of forwarding and the fact that I can't trust all of my contacts in hotmail to change the address correctly, I haven't been able to completely give up the hotmail.

now, now. Last year when I saw stats, gmail was at 35%, yahoo was at 20%, msn/live/hotmail were at 20% and everyone else had a really small sliver for online based email. comparing it to juno, angelfire, and netzero is not really an applicable comparison no matter how "dated" hotmail may seem to you.

gmail was really the first, and still only major free webmail that allows you to automatically forward your messages or to access them (for free) with POP3 or IMAP. It's a bit crazy to think nobody else has matched these features. Of course, the only thing keeping millions of people on yahoo or hotmail is simply because they can't fwd everythign to gmail, so they would really be shooting themselves in the foot by enabling automatic forwarding
