Tech issue. A lady at work brought me her Compaq CQ60 and said it was giving her a problem. I fire it up and can't even get it to POST. The screen shows nothing, but the lights on the keyboard come on. The wireless never goes from orange to white, so it sure doesn't seem like a case of the power inverter on the screen having crapped out. Hell I plugged it into an external monitor and got nothing either.
Any suggestions? Couldn't find much online. 4/3/2010 10:53:16 AM |

Mobo's probably toast. Most of the time when I'm seeing symptoms like that, there's a capacitor or something else that's decided to barf up its insides.
That said, just for fun, what if you tried plugging in an external monitor? 4/3/2010 10:58:03 AM |

BTW, no beeps or other error messages like you would normally expect if it was RAM or something.4/3/2010 11:27:43 AM |

Didn't read carefully enough, sorry. She's very likely SOL if it's out of warranty. 4/3/2010 11:29:25 AM |

It is. 14 months since she purchased it. 1 year warranty only. 4/3/2010 11:34:46 AM |

I hate those moments. They're the one thing in IT work that truly makes me sad. 4/3/2010 11:39:48 AM |

At 14 months, I'd still call.
On the other hand...it's a Compaq, so customer service probably won't give a shit. 4/3/2010 11:49:32 AM |

^I disassembled it this weekend. Nothing wrong that I could see. Also graphics card is onboard, so no way its not connected to the PC. Checked all connections and everything was right. Any other thoughts, besides the obvious that the motherboard is probably shot? 4/19/2010 8:40:39 AM |
