alright, so I have my desktop and my hardrive is about full. it still runs old windows xp. I have a file of windows 7. This is a multiple part question.
What brand of internal hardrive do yall prefer? im basically gonna get like a 300-500 gb drive. now if i hook up that drive to the computer can i format just that hardrive with windows 7, from the original drive i have? then switch everything over and reformat the original drive with windows 7? if this isnt possible, whats the best way to get to an endstate where the new drive has windows 7 and everything i want to change over? ill just erase all of the original drive and figure out something for it.
only other thing i can think of is that my computer is hooked directly into my modem, what would be the better setup to link the ps3, tv, and computer onto the internet. This is so I can get ps3 online and i want to be able to play stuff on the big tv from the computer?

^^you just plug the ps3 into it via ethernet.
what kind of tv? what are you trying to accomplish? you can use the PS3 to stream movies, etc from your computer and watch them on the tv

by "switching over" I think you mean "reinstall from scratch" for all programs. Files you have no real reason to switch over - if you have an extra free bay in your machine put them there and if not get one of those $20 USB or Firewire enclosures (be sure you buy the correct connector type for your PC.) 5/1/2010 10:04:20 PM |

yea, i have an extra bay. i need SATA. i figure ill format it in W7 and then switch some things over and clear it out. but yea, i have an external hardrive that i can use to switch some of that stuff over.
anyone know how to format a drive, never done it before 5/1/2010 11:50:26 PM |

either right click the drive from windows explorer or do it in windows setup. one of the first steps in setup is selecting a partition. it'll ask you if you want to format it when you pick a partition (i think. i know it'll at least give you the option. I haven't run setup in a while because my computers been behaving)

If you have the DVD, then you can just pop that in and run the DVD and format it.
If you have Windows loaded you can format from there in Disk Management. It's under the Control Panel but just go to the search bar and type Disk Management. That will show you all drives available and allow to format, partition, etc. while still in your OS. 5/2/2010 8:55:57 AM |

EDIT AFTER 30 MIN
my motherboard specifics have down for storage devices a SATA 3.0 Gb/s
I am trying to figure out if the motherboard can handle a SATA 6.0 Gb/s hard drive. I figure its a bit older but not sure. Havent seen anything so far online
its a MSI K9A2 platinum motherboard
side note: i am guessing that a SSD has to have a specific motherboard to support it. 5/3/2010 6:37:47 PM |

Well your original problem was lack of space, so I'd opt for the cheapest HDD at whatever size you want. 6gb/s and SSD seem like you'd be overspending to fix ur problem 5/3/2010 11:22:07 PM |

and not really fixing it since there arent any consumer ssd's available I know of over 256gb 5/4/2010 7:24:05 AM |
