5/28/10

I loved the first installment and after watching the trailers for the last 30 min I'm starting to get pumped for this one.

I don't get what that's supposed to be saying. Super Mario Galaxy had plenty of great levels and only a few tedious ones. This game looks to be more of the good stuff plus two new powerups (rock and cloud Mario) and Yoshi. I can't find much wrong with that.

What's meant by "more hassle"?

I assume the hassle is having to hook the Wii up and remember how to operate it in order to play.

The only level that I remember being tedious was the one where you had to get the special star by getting all the coins on the platform that was shaped and colored in like mario. That was hell.

I forgot about that level.

However, that was the great thing about Mario, you could be meticulous and get every damn star, or you could get the bare minimum beat the story, and just come back to it when you feel like another level

I love that level. All about skills and pretty hardcore.

Yeah that wasn't fun IMO. The really tedious ones were the purple coins for the desert and another purple coin level in the stage that was like a beach. Took like an hour and one mistake could fuck you over.

Yeah, there's no way this doesn't end up being a great game.

[Nintendo guy in charge of the project whose name I don't recall] had said that their normal business plan is to do only one Mario game per console generation, but they ended up having so many good ideas that they didn't get the chance to put into the first one that they felt the need to make a second game to accommodate it all.

It's a bunch of professional developers making a game full of stuff they wanted to add because they think that stuff would be cool. A ton of the most successful/best games have been made coming from that sort of recipe.

...They even did Bowser the way he SHOULD be done:

wow I knew it would be a great game but I didn't think it would get perfect scores, being a sequel damn

any places doing a midnight release?

if wal-mart is open 24 hours does that mean they release the game at midnight or do they wait until later in the morning?

I hated the purple coin one on the moving platform around the battleship...if you missed a single coin you had to start over. THey could have at least given you a star blast back to the beginning, but no.

Just got back with mine and played for a little bit. pretty good so far...but i'm just past the intro stuff...
wal-mart was a fiasco. i went back to the electronics and of course around midnight the store is practically empty with no employees. eventually, a guy saw me and asked if i needed help. i told him what i was there for and he said hold on let me ask someone. he finally found a girl to ask and she came over to me and said, "that doesn't come out until tuesday"
By then 2 other guys had come up as well and we all said, "no, it comes out today, which is now since it is after midnight". she said that she didn't know anything about it and she wasn't about to get fired, so we'd have to wait until the manager got out of a meeting and ask him about it.
We said we understood and we waited 15 minutes. Finally, the manager came over and we told him about it.
He went to the back for a few minutes and came out with super mario strikers. We told him the name of the game again and he finally found it. The other 2 guys that were there bought 7 games a piece.

after 4-5 worlds, im not so sure this is 10/10 material. It brings back (at least one of) the best games ever, but its the same bosses, abilities, worlds, etc all over again (so far).

Yeah, I was wondering about that 10/10 as well. I read a review where they stated that the Mario 3 type overworld was a vast improvement over the original Galaxy and Mario 64 and my mind just went 'wat'?. A huge overworld where you find things was just amazing, then they move back and you call it a blessing? BS. Granted Galaxy was a bit much, but this removal is just huge in a bad way.

And this getting kicked out a level after each star was outdated the day Banjo-Kazooie came out. Its just really disruptive. I'm assuming Galaxy 2 uses the same lazy design. Its not a deal breaker (for everyone), but it certainly should have been enough to discredit the 10/10.

is anyone really surprised they are riding mario's cock in reviews?

i enjoyed mario galaxy, but i usually sit out a few releases between mario games so it gets that fresh and exciting feel (owned mario 1/3/64/galaxy, but played 2/super mario world).

it is pretty complex so far and i'm still in world 1. they didn't water it down at all and there have been plenty of new surprises so far

i'm still trying to figure out what the comet coins do. i've gottan a couple of them already but don't know what the purpose is

collecting a certain number of them triggers the comet stars on certain levels, I don't remember how many you have to get before they start showing up though

^yeah... but it was legit b/c there was a side room and there were some employees and a manager in there going over paperwork....

the stars with the question mark are hidden stars in that level. to get the one in the upside down world, you need to go in the green pipe on the ceiling near the beginning of the level. if i remember correctly, that's the one where there is a flower powerup challenge

nope, question mark stars are different from prankster comet stars. A question mark star is just hidden with in the level.

So far......I really like it. I'm only 27 stars in, and I feel as if each and every star I've earned put forth a unique experience. That's quite impressive in my mind. I know that I still haven't found every single power up in the game either, but so far the variety is pretty outstanding and I can't get enough of how much fun Yoshi is.

I already like the level design better in this game that Galaxy 1; I felt like a lot of the levels in the first Galaxy were re-hashes of each other (I remember there being like 4 beach levels), but I haven't got that vibe from Galaxy 2.

One thing I'm PRAYING for in Galaxy 2 are secrets in the same vein as SMW since the game has shifted back to a "world map" perspective going between galaxies. I'm really hoping certain galaxies will contain hidden exits or some other type of hidden/secret goal that will allow me to access something awesome. Secrets like this combined with the general sense of exploration and the rewards for doing so are my favorite parts of the Mario games.

I'm already really hoping they don't bring back those fucking "100 coin" challenges. Those were by far my least favorite things to do in Mario 64 and Galaxy. Seriously. Fuck getting 100 coins. The worst star in all of Galaxy 1 was when you had to get 100 coins on that fucking rocketship. I really, really hope by now Nintendo has moved on from that.

Also, to whoever above who said they hoped this game didn't pull the "kick you out of the level" trick for failing at a star: I'm happy to report that this game does not do that. You go back to your last checkpoint.
