Quote : | "But industry sources pegged a pending deal with ESPN at $1.86 billion over 12 years .
...
Raycom Sports, a 30-year partner with the conference, is expected to continue running the syndicated package of football and basketball by sublicensing those games from ESPN. It is unclear what digital rights are included, but the deal is thought to be an all-encompassing arrangement between the ACC and ESPN that includes online and broadband.
...
The ACC’s new contract, which will take the league through the 2022-23 season, will be structured differently than its previous contracts. In the past, the ACC sold its football rights to ESPN, while Raycom bought the basketball rights. Other broadcasters who wanted ACC basketball, such as CBS, ESPN and FSN, acquired their games from Raycom.
The new deal puts the football and basketball rights in ESPN’s basket, from which Raycom, FSN and others will purchase their games. " |
The article doesn't it say it but does this mean Raycom is out for the ACCT? If so that's kind of sad, ESPN really bugs me with the need to run the BottomLine 24 hours a day now, with the same scores scrolling across the screen every 2 or 3 minutes. THERE'S NO FUCKING POINT. Raycom provides a better HD picture anyway.
I do hope FSN keeps doing the Sunday night games though, that's nice to have throughout the season.5/17/2010 10:15:27 AM |

1.86 billion over 12 years is a nice chunk of change for the league though.
Couple that with more exposure than ever now nationally, and it looks like a good deal. 5/17/2010 10:19:35 AM |

Forgot this part:
That annual figure of $155 million dwarfs the average of $67 million the league was getting from its previous media deals, which expire at the end of the 2010-11 season, but falls well short of the $205 million a year that the SEC gets from its new 15-year deals with CBS and ESPN.

In all actuality, this probably wont change a lot other than more $$$ for the ACC because Raycom will still buy the broadcasts they want, but we will end up with more on ESPN which is a win.

Although someone on packpride did mention that this could help prevent the ACC from being raided, since we're making more than most other conferences, and a reasonable amount compared to the SEC. 5/17/2010 11:56:34 AM |

the way the article in the charlotte observer reads it sounds like Raycom will continue to air many of the games in the ACC region, subleasing them from ESPN. I can only imagine the ACCT will be a part of this. Dick Vitale blacked out on ESPN and Mike the G-man in his suspenders in full glory on Raycom5/18/2010 7:58:45 AM |

As I've understood it, Raycom games as well as FSN Sunday Night Hoops is all still possible, they just have to buy the rights from ESPN. FSN had to buy their games from Raycom in the past, why not buy them from ESPN now?
Not saying they'll choose to do it, but they certainly can. 5/18/2010 9:05:23 AM |

I just hate that ESPN is eating up every major league and conference it can. I mean, web broadcasts are the future, but until they can stream in HD, and until they take down the pay wall like CBS, I'd rather not see them eating everything like this because it just means more games will be locked up online instead of being available on other networks. My hope is that this Comcast-NBC deal makes channels like Vs. bigger players so ESPN has another cable challenger with a lot of cash behind it. 5/18/2010 11:24:57 AM |

A little more detail released today...
Raycom will continue to complete the ACC Basketball lineup, but it looks like FSN Sunday Night Hoops is done, replaced by something on ESPNU on Sunday Nights (ugh.)
Quote : | "ESPN has been televising ACC content since the first year of the network in 1979-80. Highlights of the new agreement include: Football on national TV: Regular-season action on Saturday afternoon and nights, primetime Thursdays, Labor Day Monday and the ACC Football Championship Game; Men’s basketball on national TV: The most games ever across the ESPN networks, highlighted by both regular-season matchups of the storied Duke-North Carolina rivalry each year; for the first time, full national telecasts on all games televised on an ESPN platform (had been local market blackouts on handful of telecasts); a new weekly Sunday franchise on ESPNU; every regular-season intra-conference game and the entire conference tournament produced and distributed via ESPN and Raycom Sports; Women’s basketball: A record number of women’s regular-season basketball games and the addition of the entire conference tournament; Olympic sports: An expanded commitment to the league’s 22-sponsored Olympic sports with regular-season and championship telecasts, highlighted by baseball, softball, lacrosse, and men’s and women’s soccer; Syndication: Syndication rights for ACC football, basketball and Olympic sports action for over-the-air and regional cable network distribution in ACC markets and beyond via an agreement with Raycom Sports and through potential sublicense agreements with other national outlets; Digital media: Exclusive ACC football, men’s and women’s basketball, and Olympic sports games as well as simulcasts on ESPN3.com. Live ACC games, including football and basketball, on ESPN Mobile TV; ESPN 3D: Live ACC action on ESPN 3D, ESPN’s newest network and the first 3D network to launch in the industry; Additional outlets: ACC action on ESPN International, ESPN GamePlan, ESPN FULL COURT, ESPN Classic and ESPN Deportes; and extensive content rights for ESPN.com." |
Quote : | "ESPN will also retain the rights to all ACC Tournament games for distribution across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU (with no blackouts). " |
Raycom is done with the ACC Tournament (after this coming season)
Quote : | "ESPN Classic: The network may telecast live ACC games as well as historic and immediate encore presentations. " |
is ESPN moving toward ESPN Classic becoming ESPN4?

Don't like it, don't like it at all.
With Raycom, we knew that we would get the local football games and we knew that we'd get ACC tournament coverage that everyone could watch anywhere, regardless of whether or not you have cable. (The boss could say, bring a tv to work with some rabbit ears and put on the tournament in the break room)
Now everyone's locked into ESPN, which is also trying to shoehorn in every other damned team in the country.
I mean, we're now competing with the Big East (and damned near every other conference) for airtime during tournament season. Luckily the finals day can still be spaced out, but what about the Friday games?
Eh, I'm sure it won't be that bad. Honestly I'm just whining because I don't want to have to get cable just to watch my team play. I've really enjoyed not having cable and still having SOMETHING worth watching on Sundays in Autumn. 7/8/2010 11:52:01 AM |

Pretty sure the Big East has some hybrid network where it hops between different channels like MASN, MSG and SNY, depending on which teams are playing and which stations have open air time.
Not so much a network as a roving production team. 7/8/2010 12:04:46 PM |

Raycom will still be handling the syndicated package, so unless there is an actual schedule change, there should still be a football game on every Saturday at noon. For football, it doesnt sound like much has changed, other than there may also be games Raycom produces that are distributed via RSNs. I just hope the only thing Raycom changes is its announcers...hopefully they dont switch th 720p to remain consistent with the mothership.
Quote : | "ESPN will also retain the rights to all ACC Tournament games for distribution across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU (with no blackouts)" |
But it also says "entire conference tournament produced and distributed via ESPN and Raycom Sports"...which is it? Again, Ill take the Raycom broadcast any day of the week over ESPNs...Raycom looks so much better, and at least theres no Dickie V or a guy talking about Britney Spears.
Kinda disappointing to see so many games will be on ESPNx...Ive never understood why people think their coverage is so much better. Hopefully Dish will at least get its shit together and have ESPNUHD before the 2011 season begins, although early September would be much more preferable. ^^^ i think the Raycom part is more about doing the conference basketball schedule than it is the tournament. it's just a poorly worded sentence.
I hate this if only for one reason, that ESPN feels the need to run the bottomline 100% of the time. it really takes away from a great HD picture

Well the good news is that NBC is merging with Comcast, barring some sort of unforeseen crisis. The bad news is that we saw this merger with AOL-Time Warner, but this isn't the same sort of thing since Comcast is already well adapted to the cable TV and internet business. Essentially they're just grabbing more content in the form of NBC and Universal.
This is very good for hockey fans, as this combines NBC and Vs.'s resources. It's good for sports fans in that it creates another group flush with cash to challenge ESPN. It hopefully means that hockey stays on NBC/Vs., the NFL stays divided up so ESPN can't grab it, and MLB likely has 3 big competitors for the next contracts. 7/9/2010 11:47:12 AM |

I REALLY enjoyed watching Sunday night ACC matches on Fox. I just dont like ESPN, being the Alpha/Omega of everything dealing with sports broadcasting. Competition is always a good thing for business. But, I guess since its all about money these days....espn's monetary clout was too much for the other sports stations to handle.
I just hate when a kick ass game is on like ESPN U, or some other obscure ass channel and you have to go to a goddamn sports bar to watch it instead of being able to enjoy it in the confines of your own home and on 'regular cable'.
But, I have season tickets to States games this season so thank God I dont have to deal with that bull shit! 7/11/2010 5:39:58 PM |
