Why does NC State need to be a public school? Pretty simple. It's inefficiencies can be bad. Is it time to make it have to be private and run by people who know business and not the government?

there are already private land-grant universities, so this is really nothing new. they could partner with university of phoenix to administrate the distance programs--call it UoP@NCSU. it would be a cost-saving measure that also leverages UoP's experience in the sub-prime education market. it could only benefit students...

If it was privatized, it would probably become more selective.

If he couldn't get into NC State now, how would he get in if it was private? Dude should apply to MIT!

I say we start jumping and then along with it go "ooooooooooooo" and get louder like "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH" and then switch to "PRIVATIZE! PRIVATIZE! PRIVATIZE! PRIVATIZE! OOOOOO PRIVATIZE! PRIVATIZE! PRIVATIZE! PRIVATIZE! OOOOOOOOOOOO! PRIVATIZE! GOVERNMENT LIES! BUSINESS WISE!" and then play a loud rockin rap song or somethin. i think it would get things crazy.

I think that NCSU being "public" leads to many disadvantages as far as student life, quality, and value are concerned.

Nevertheless I respect the reason for public universities and they serve their use well. They are able to mass produce an accredited education program at a reasonable cost. Had I gone to a private school I think it would have been nice not having to deal with some of the bullshit but on the other hand I $3k for in-state tution is hard to beat.

One example i can think, I know someone is going to flame since this is not academic related, is responsible alcohol policy. At davidson and other private universities i have visited, campus provides drunk shuttles for students (even if underage ) to discourage drunk driving and to make sure everyone gets back to the dorm safe. At NCSU though they provide a " free shuttle van" but I have heard several anecdotes that often the van takes any students they pick up thought to be drinking underage to the police station to get a underage drinking ticket. Since the state wants to take a hardline on the issue, then as a public university receiving state funds, NCSU must conform to the state positions.

its simple. you need to introduce EFFICENCY into NC State. Ive been calling to deal with the state of nc-approved buracracy the past few days and its terrible. call nc state. now call a great private company like fed ex. who helps you?
