who is going where, when, and what is everyone reeling in this summer/year.

freshwater/saltwater, it does not matter. lets go fishin'.

i caught a 13lb red drum off Emerald Isle on Saturday using 8lb line and shrimp. it was delicious. also hooked some blues and spanish.

Just renewed my fishing license. Ready to catch some lunkers. dweedle, how is the bass fishing at Michie? Can I fish off the bank and catch anything?

they say there are some big fish in Michie, however we weren't able to make it to all the spots bc the douche gave us a faulty battery that basically died after 3 hours

i didnt see a lot of spots for bank fishing out there, there're a lot of trees right up to the water all the way around it from what we saw

I was listening to the radio chatter yesterday on the Big Rock website. When they were on the way in the Capt asked headquarters to call his wife to let her know he wouldn't be coming home tonight.

There is alot more strategy involved in this tournament than most people think. with that being said if you are the Citation captain and crew do you not fish the rest of the week and save money on gas and bait or do you fish for dolphin tuna and wahoo and try to cash in a little more in the game fish division?

i would probably fish more but not for marlin

records only get bigger and they already are guaranteed like $315K or so for bringing in the first one >500 lbs

no, they are guaranteed about $912,000 i believe...as long as it remains the biggest

yeah, but "guaranteed" means no matter what they get the 300k amount

"as long as it remains the biggest" means just that

however i doubt anyone will top 883 lbs

went out in morehead city last week...lots of Cobia running up the coast. menhaden on 20lb line w/ a leader pulls em right in. if you're mackeral fishing, the same set up works well on both fish...caught one on a squid jig rig as well

kevmcd86 do you normally make it a habit to keep out of slot redfish? The fines are pretty hefty. People like you are the ones that ruin the coastal fisheries for the rest of us.

unfortunately for you, i know that it is legal to catch and consume 1 per day if caught within 3 miles of the coast. as long as its between 18"-27" it is perfectly legal, and fucking delicious.

and hell yes i was going to eat that 13lb red drum. had a great fish fry.

ps: here's a link to all the fishing guidelines for 2010 in NC, so you dont go making yourself look like an asshole like ^^

I think the guy was debating the fact that there's no way a 13 lb red drum can be less than 27 inches long.

fair enough. perhaps our scale was off, but it was def >10lbs and just under 26". my gf's stepdad is very adamant about abiding by fisheries rules. he explained to me how a lot of these fish were completely overfished back in the 70s and 80s, and that he is always careful about it. he does a lot of shore fishing

The largest slot Redfish caught on the IFA redfish tour was 9.15 lbs this year and that was in Louisiana. The record slot redfish is 12.68 lbs, also from Louisiana. You either broke the law or you are telling a fishing tale. Im hoping you just over estimated the weight. If it was in fact that big you should have taken it in for a citation. The DMF is always interested.

And im not trying to be an asshole, i do more than my part in conservation of our fisheries. It pisses me off to no end when i see people taking more than they need or is legally allowed. There are way more people on the water that have no idea what the regulations are and why they are in place.

tight lines

the fish was about 26". like i said, perhaps i over estimated it's weight. i'll try and get a picture of it from my gf's family. we took a pic of it on the beach

the record red drum is 94lbs in NC i believe.

The Citation took a lay day yesterday and they are fishing today. I think there is no question that you continue to fish the tournament. There are other catagories you can still get money from. First release of the day gets $2000. Whoever wins the catch and release for the week gets $82,304.

http://www.thebigrock.com/prize-schedule

I see what you are saying, but it cost each boat $18,000 to enter all the categories. I don't think the boat owners are worried about the cost of fuel and bait for a few more days of fishing.

in case some haven't heard the news...

tournament officials are stripping Citation of the record and prize money for the 883lb marlin caught last monday. A mate on board did not have a NC fishing license, therefore disqualifying the boat.

absolutely unbelieveable.

"rumor mill has it that they caught the fish 2 days earlier, tied it to a buoy for a couple days, then radioed in on monday that they were hooked up. 3 hours later they radio and say they boated the fish. the fishing license story is a cover for the tournament and boat to save face. what kind of a professional hired mate doesn't have a NC saltwater license?? seriously?? looks like another article:

Quote :
"One of the boat's owners, Michael Topp, says the lack of a license was discovered during a lie detector test. The tournament requires the test for some of those on the boat that wins the top money."

Lie detector? really?

lie detector could only be used to determine whether or not the guy helped reel in the fish...

if its a question of whether or not he has a license, couldn't they just look up his registration in the NC wildlife database???

^^and that sounds absolutely ridiculous, but totally feasible..

Did you end up going?

We went out on Saturday to the No. 14 buoy. Caught 2 dolphins there. Then the weather was looking a little nasty and our lightning gauge said it was within 8 miles, so we decided to come closer to shore. We went over to the C-Buoy and did some bottom fishing, caught 4 black sea bass and a trigger fish there.

Sucks for the guys on the Citation. Probably an honest mistake. I know the angler was from Virginia so maybe the mate in question was from VA as well and did not think to get a license.

Fished the tournament last wednesday, man was it hot. Coldest water we found all day was 82*. And that was in the slip at Old Towne Yacht Club! No billfish but the damn peanut dolphin were bustin through the baits all day. They have been wearing the little dolphin out.

^^yea, i did end up going.

friday night we went gigging and got some good flounder.

we trolled out in front of Atlantic Beach saturday and caught some spanish. it was too rough on saturday to make it too far out.

we went out to the slew on sunday...it was just so damn rough out there. we decided to just troll from the Cape to the Slew. we were going to try and make it out to 90'drop but swells were 2-4ft in the morning and picked up to probably 4-6ft by 11am. we caught a baby false albacore. really pretty fish. snagged some spanish too. we did a little bit of fishing out by the jetties off the cape for Cobia, to no avail.

fishing conditions were pretty tough this weekend out there overall. steady 15-20knot winds all day that picked up later in the afternoon.

it looked like there was a lot of action at the Beaufort inlet channel, just out of it on the left side. lots of boats out there. anyone try there?

two of the smaller spanish we got:

saw this on Shack:

WIN.

"The rule violation involves the “mate” not having a Coastal Recreational Fishing License, which is required by North Carolina law and by the Tournament. Participants and crew were reminded of the license requirement at the Captains meeting prior to the Tournament. The mate engaged in fishing activities without a valid license and later obtained a license at 5:51 pm while heading to the weigh station. The fish was boated at 3:16 pm."

http://www.wralsportsfan.com/fishing/story/7833471/

so this goes against everything they were telling the press. The crew knew he didn't have a license, so they pulled over, let him run up there and get one, then hop back in the boat.

It kind of makes sense now. I went down to the Big Rock landing the day the Citation was bringing in the marlin. The original ETA for the Citation to get to the dock was like 6:00pm. They didn't get there until some time around 6:30 or so.

who fishes in such a big tourney w/o getting a license?...Better yet, what captian allows anyone in his crew to fish w/o a license when so much money is on the line?
