Mindless over-the-top summer action flick that likely didn't do the original series justice (I can't know this for a fact, I never watched the original series). But damn if I wasn't entertained. 6/12/2010 11:54:00 AM |

It was great for a mindless action flick, but it lost much of its charm and wholesomeness in the transition to the big screen.
The original show was about a group that met in the military, got involved in a mission that went bad and were framed for a war crime. They escaped military prison and traveled the country, doing good as they went for groups who couldn't protect themselves or solving problems that the police couldn't. The military police pursued them doggedly, but were not evil, just obsessed like Javert in Les Miserables.
The movie transforms them into international super men, dogged by the "evil" CIA and the Department of Defense, who's leader happens to be a beautiful girl in her 20's.(shrug) Instead of using their wits, building crude homemade devices and procuring supplies from unlikely sources to aid in battles, the movie A-team somehow magically sees into the future, builds massively expensive pyrotechnic light shows and exhibits perfectly choreographed catlike timing and invulnerability like a bad Batman movie. I don't have a problem with ramping up the drama and action for the big screen, but this isn't even the same type of story.
The actors do a fine job mimicking their respective characters, but there's not quite the chemistry that the originals had. BA and murdoch don't fight incessantly. Face doesn't con anyone. AT NO POINT DOES ANY MEMBER OF THE A-TEAM WEAR A DISGUISE OR HELP ANYONE BESIDES THEIR SELVES.
If you were a fan of the TV show you'll likely be disappointed. If you were born after 1990 you won't know any better or care enough to give a shit. Look for a Simon and Simon cameo too.

By making an international spy thriller, the filmmakers really missed an opportunity to discuss on the fate of soldiers returning to civilian life, as so many currently are. Are some men destined to always be warriors? Is there a place for them in America? What do they do with their lives once they get out? And is the government really capable of protecting its citizens, or is there a place for vigilantes or even just people standing up for themselves. Murdoch is a clown of a character in the movie, but so many skilled men are coming back from war damaged in the head. These men are far from useless, but how many would rot in psych wards if their buddies didn't "break them out". The moral battle about the necessity of violence was nice, but BA ultimately only chose violence just to save his friend, not the world. Many soldiers justify their actions in the mideast the same way. They don't care about politics, they're just out there to watch their buddies' back.
It all sounds dull when I say it, but a good movie could have engaged all these topics while still keeping the audience laughing and enthralled. They started with a good story, solid characters, and enough intellectual material to fill volumes, but they seem to have thrown all that away for the easy summer blockbuster dollar. I just think it was an opportunity wasted.
Sorry, I only see a couple movies a year now. I expect more from them than most people, I suppose.

There was no use of the "wheel shot" in this film.
It would have been cool if in at least one small scene, everyone is firing automatic weapons but then everyone stands up unharmed.
I don't remember seeing BA welding in any scene.
Little things like that would have made this a more enjoyable remake. The world doesn't need any more Ocean's Impossible Bond Identity movies. 6/12/2010 7:44:10 PM |

I didn't say make the whole movie about it. Not once in the film did they say to each other, "Hey, what are you going to do when this is over?" "You ever wonder if this is all there is to our lives?" "Are we going to do this forever?" Anything to make them actually seem like human beings.
Also, why should I care about counterfeit dollar printing plates? Isn't there some corporate farm muscling in on migrant workers somewhere? A construction mogul trying to pave over an orphange? Hell, just some random shitty dude in Iraq fucking with women and children. Give me a reason to root for the A-team.
The best thing about the A-team was that even though they were fighting for their honor and risking their lives(execution by firing squad), they always put their plans on hold to spend a week in one place and help someone. They were men that had literally lost everything and so did whatever they wanted. I never heard the word "revenge" in the show.

Never saw the series. Found the film entertaining, considerably more so than expected. In many ways more of a comedy than an action flick, but then, that's what I gather has happened to the series over the years. 6/13/2010 3:40:20 AM |

There's no excuse for that. Watch the original here: http://www.nbc.com/classic-tv/a-team/video/categories/season-1/32423/
Any episode is good. Face is played by a different actor in the pilot. You see that the tone is entirely different.

saw it yesterday; i enjoyed it for what it was. i thought everyone fit their characters well except Liam as Hannibal. i just couldn't get into him as being Hannibal Smith.. it could simply be how well George Peppard played Hannibal in the TV series. but i think if this movie is relatively successful maybe they will turn it into a series of movies?
as for the cameo appearances, Dirk Benedict was supposed to have a cameo but I couldn't spot him anywhere. did anyone see him? i also heard rumors that Dwight Shultz was to have a cameo as well but i never saw him either. Mr. T was the only one to turn down a cameo from what i read/heard.

Oh, you're right about the welding.
The original actors were pissed at how small their cameos were. I missed both.
George Peppard was the real deal. A marine in the 40's, stunt pilot, civil engineer, all-around badass. On the A-Team female actresses' first day, he would invite them back to his dressing room, where he would then tell them that they were not necessary, not wanted or beneficial to the show, and were there purely because the network executives said so. 6/14/2010 5:29:28 PM |

When I was 8 years old, lightning struck my house while I was watching the A-Team. I was sitting very close the television when all the appliances in the entertainment center exploded and the wall outlets caught fire. My parents freaked out, but I thought it was the best A-Team stunt ever.
^^I didn't say he wasn't a dick. But he was a man's man. He also shagged Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's....so there's that.

Thought it was a great summer movie. I liked the simplistic plot. No need to go all "007" on a movie based off an 80's TV show. I hope they make a sequel (which I am sure they will). I felt the actors fit their characters very well and the background story for the A-Team was enjoyable.
