it was stupid and complete douchebaggery to try to stop someone for jaywalking, of all things

that said, she DID break the law and stopping her IS within the scope of his job as a cop...she got uppity because she could, her friend grabbed the cop's arm, and the cop hauled off and punched her

should he have punched her? of course not...should the one girl have caused a problem when he made her aware that she was breaking the law, and should the second girl have grabbed the cop? of course not

cops power-trip and some people look for excuses to throw a fit

Trying to bust some girls for jaywalking is pretty pathetic, but they started being bitches right away. I think I'm more surprised by the lack of force - in the sense that if it were a guy he was trying to cuff, there wouldn't have been so much of a struggle. I imagine the cop probably would have slammed a guy around a little more.

The officer knew he had a crowd and didn't seem to want to hurt the girl. But when her friend came over and started to get in the middle of it all he had to do something- punching her in the face probably wasn't it. Tazing them would have been more fun.

while i agree that trying to ticket them for jaywalking is a little extreme, that is not what they ended up being arrested for. Clearly these two women were obstructing the officer from doing his job, would not listen to reason, and then became aggressive. At this point the jaywalking issue doesn't matter one bit. I see nothing wrong with what he did. But the guy should have been able to subdue the other girl pretty easily, he really let himself get pushed around too long.

you also have to realize that in NYC, jaywalking is considered more serious of a crime than assault, murder, or rape.

In what bizarre world do we live in where people expect to shove a police officer repeatedly and get away with it?

Yeah, it was unfortunate but he needed to do something in this situation. He should've used more force on the girl in the black shirt, guy needs to go back to training and learn how to subdue subjects.

Why blame the cop when he is just enforcing the law which is his job? If we think the law is ridiculous, then we should blame the lawmakers not the enforcer.

On a serious note, several states are now attempting to make it a crime to film cops, three have succeeded:

Quote :
"In response to a flood of Facebook and YouTube videos that depict police abuse, a new trend in law enforcement is gaining popularity. In at least three states, it is now illegal to record any on-duty police officer.

Even if the encounter involves you and may be necessary to your defense, and even if the recording is on a public street where no expectation of privacy exists.

The legal justification for arresting the "shooter" rests on existing wiretapping or eavesdropping laws, with statutes against obstructing law enforcement sometimes cited. Illinois, Massachusetts, and Maryland are among the 12 states in which all parties must consent for a recording to be legal unless, as with TV news crews, it is obvious to all that recording is underway. Since the police do not consent, the camera-wielder can be arrested. Most all-party-consent states also include an exception for recording in public places where "no expectation of privacy exists" (Illinois does not) but in practice this exception is not being recognized."

In this case though, it is going to be hard to prove the cop was that far in the wrong. If anything, given the fact that controlling the cop meant controlling his weapon, the escalation of force after physical contact was made probably should have been more pronounced.

Well, you just have to make it obvious, that's all.

The incident occurred about 3 p.m. Monday near Franklin High, where staff and the school district's central office had requested increased police monitoring because they were concerned about the number of students jaywalking.

That was just a really awkward video.

Two things are obvious from watching it:

1) Those people escalated that situation into what it ultimately led to. Sure, the cop was probably being a dick for attempting to write a jaywalking ticket, but it probably never would have gotten to that point if those people hadn't been so ridiculous.

2) That cop SUCKED at subduing people. He couldn't put that girl in cuffs if his life depended on it. He was completely out of control of that whole situation. Had he been a little better at his job, then there wouldn't have been an opportunity for all of that to happen. And he definitely shouldn't have punched that girl. What a fucking idiot. He should have used some force on her, but that punch was ridiculous.

Dumb cops and stupid people ITVideo.

im resisting the urge to reply here because ive already been accused of being racist, but look at the actors involved. its just a matter of time before quanell x or jessie jackson or any of those types gets involved, because a 'white' cop punched a 'black' girl.

I don't know. He should have tazed them then it would've been legit.

However, I do know that North Carolina (1 of 7 in the US) is a contributory negligence state. I don't kow if Washington is or not but it would matter to me if I was insured in that state and they had a "comparative negligence" law. Say I hit one of these jaywalking morons and they were suing me for everything I owned because they had witnesses that said I was speeding (and would be found somewhat at fault).

The only issue I see here is that this cop has trouble controlling/cuffing a single female. That crowd could have gotten ugly quick and messing around for several minutes after he threw that punch was a dumb move on his part. He needs some training, a partner, and to grow a pair. Until then, he's not really cut out for what he is doing.

In NC, if someone is hurt by someone else's negligence, they can't recover any damages. Say for instance a driver who is speeding hits a pedestrian who is jaywalking. Because that person was jaywalking, they can't recover damages from the driver or his insurance, even if he was doing 150mph.

NC is one of few states that have this legal framework. However, I don't know if Washington (where this event took place) has that law.

Conversely, say I was driving down the road and I hit a pedestrian who was jay walking. There were witnesses who said I was speeding. If Washington is a comparative negligence state, and it went to trial and a jury found that the accident was 70% my fault, because the witnesses said I was speeding, the pedestrian (plantiff) could recover 70% of their damages from my insurance and assets.

Did that help?

First, he didn't punch her for jaywalking, he punched her because she was grabbing him and getting in the way. Second, they were jaywalking 15 feet from a crossing only because he stopped a guy who had done it. They were obviously trying to provoke the cop. Third, the "are you serious" guy must be related to Bob "Who are you?" Etheridge. Fourth, it's a bunch of savages, don't fuck with the cops. Yeah, jaywalking is bullshit but they were doing it for a reason, to fuck with the cop, pink shirt got what she was looking for.

"For about five years, Rai Goulsby has walked around Seattle with a camcorder around his neck, looking to catch some action — a car crash, a crazy fight — and maybe earn a few bucks selling the footage.

Monday, he videotaped a Seattle police officer punching a teenager in the face. Finally, Goulsby thought, he caught something to sell.

He went to KING-TV and KOMO-TV, asking for $1,000 for the footage, according to KING assistant news director Laura Newborn.

"We paid him substantially less than that," she said, adding the standard fee is $50 to $100.

Goulsby, 26, says the national media are interested, too. "ABC, CNN, 'Inside Edition,' " he said. "They wanted to try to set up an interview with me. I'm not sure how to go about handling the situation."

Recently laid off as a communications technician, he's been looking for work, he said.

Videotaping has been a hobby. He said he had about 50 videos posted on YouTube until the site shut him down. They included fights, accidents, even a guy who pulled a knife and tried to kill himself.

Nobody (cop or civilian) has the right to harm you. If they put your hands on you, defend your self; fight back until they stop. That punch ended the one attacker quickly and decisively...it was an effective attack. As an LEO you can punch people, even in the head.

As an officer, if someone puts their hands on you, you take action. Consequences have actions; a jaywalker pushing you without punishment might lead to her seriously injuring another officer because they believe there is no consequences.

Use of force options are not a continuum; if A doesn't work go to B. A rapidly evolving situation requires a reasonably trained officer to make a snap judgement based on their training and experience.

Lastly, trying to take someone in to custody who doesn't want to go isn't easy. It is easy to arm chair quarterback. As the video winds down, in my opinion, he could have used more strikes (baton, etc) to gain compliance instead of dancing with her.

Yeah, she did shut up real fast. I definitely don't think the cop was wrong at all. I think she got off easy with a right hook considering he always would have been justified in the use of pepper spray or a baton. I'd rather catch a fist than pepper spray or a baton.

has the NAACP come out on this yet? judging by what they have been complaining about in the last few weeks it seems like they would jump all over this...

their complaint will not only be the white male cop hitting a black female but a white cop stalking out black jaywalkers on MLK Jr. BLVD. That's racism IMO.
