Most people I talked to said New Moon was the worst cause it was just her moping around all the time.

I had similar problems getting through New Moon...that one took me like 6 months I think.

Not that I was continuously reading...I'd read a couple pages, get bored and then pick it up a couple days later.

I think it had potential to be cheesy/cute like the others but it seemed really rushed. It glossed over a lot of things I wanted to see more of, like the origins of rosalie and jasper, and the quiluete history. The action scenes were OK but I wanted more. There were way too many close up shots, so I spent too much time looking up the actors' noses.

I saw the first movie, luckily with rifftrax. I caught about 5 minutes of part 2, the part where they go see some head vampires in Tuscany (or somewhere) that eat unsuspecting tourist groups. I've heard that this was "the best part" of the second movie. If that sequence was the most entertaining part... wow.

I regret even asking, but I'll make an attempt to try to stay culturally relevant.

From trailers I gather that there's this one girl that can't decide whether she's in love with:

1) An overly jealous werewolf that has all the positive traits you would expect out of someone that is at a 'search through your garbage' level of stalker. Maybe mix in 'pick fights because they think you're looking at their girl'. At least that's how he comes off in the trailers, always with a look that says "I'm smelling a fresh batch of werewolf poo that I just stepped in".

2) An aloof, effeminate vampire.

If a chick is constantly on the fence on whether she wants to go out with me or some other guy it seems like the sensible thing to do would be to dump her. What incentive do the two dudes have for wanting to maintain a relationship with someone that's extremely quick to two-time them?

^Twilight ruined vampires? Don't make me scoff. Vampires have undergone a pitiful decline ever since Salem's Lot.

Let's take a look: Underworld (and god help us, Underworld: Evolution), 30 Days of Night, Blade Trinity, Dracula 2000, Queen of the Damned, Van Helsing, it reads like a who's who of the most steaming shit piles in recent memory.

Salem's Lot was corny but they were old school vampires and I respect that.

I did the good big brother thing and took my sister to the opening of New Moon for her birthday. I don't, however, have much inclination to see this one.

And Daybreakers, though it doesn't rank among the movies I listed, certainly wasn't very good or even good. The plot was haphazard, the characters were mostly one dimensional, and the Chrysler product placement was just pathetic.

I do not understand at all why there is so much hype about this movie and why it is shattering box office records. I have not seen the movies but even friends (female) that enjoyed the books thought the last two movies were mediocre at best. Beyond some college girls, tweens, and middle aged moms (with Tweens) the Twilight series in general has no mass appeal. The critics have all but slaughtered each of the movies in the series. Just from looking at the gross revenue and sales though you would think this was a continuation of the Lord of the Rings trilogy or the next Leonardo Di’Caprio blockbuster.
I just do not get it.....
Formula for Movie Success:

1 Popular Book Series + Tween Target Audience + Shitty Acting + n00b Director = $Profit High Gross Movie

From what I have heard this is just some lubby dubby romance, with some PG rated action, and pussified vampires.

How the hell could this compare to even a modern vampire storyline like the one from True Blood.

Went and saw it the other night. I was very impressed. Eclipse was my least favorite book so I wasn't expecting to like it. I actually really enjoyed it. I think it might be my favorite movie so far! I thought it had a lot more action, had a lot more humor and Kristen Stewart's acting seems to have improved.

I can't wait for the last one...should be interesting to see how they do some of the scenes.

I'll give you that Daybreakers had an interesting concept, but they should've skipped the halfhearted social commentary. Willem Dafoe was the only cast member who knew what kind of movie he was in.

I dunno.

As with every type of movie and movies in general, there have always been a few good ones and a LOT of shit. There wasn't an abundance of great vampire flicks in the 70's and 80's. There was... Nosferatu remake... Salem's Lot... 80's had Lost Boys and Near Dark.

The 90's probably had somewhere between 4 and 10, I haven't seen enough of them to judge. But there was Blade i guess, From Dusk Til Dawn i guess, Bram Stoker's, Interview.

The aughts had Shadow of The Vampire and Let The Right One In off the top of my head. Blade II, I guess.

By the end of 2010 there will probably be two good vampire films this decade so far(Daybreakers[meh, i guess this is 2009, made the festival rounds in '09, actual release was 2010] and Let Me In).


And I agree, "it's not twilight's fault."

so true. It was an interesting concept. they just didn't execute (write or direct) it well. And Dafoe was great as usual.

I recently watched Thirst and really liked it. It's korean (i think) movie. written/directed by the guy who did Oldboy, Lady Vengeance, etc. It's about a Catholic priest who accidentally becomes a vampire through a blood transfusion. How he deals with his new needs/urges, and then everything that comes with that.

And I liked the idea and the vampires in 30 Days of Night. The movie had some major flaws, but I did like the idea.

The others, underworld, blade, etc., I don't even think of as "vampire movies" really. They're just action movies that have vampires in them.

No, that's overly simplifying what I was getting at. Regardless of whether it's a drama, comedy, romance, etc., simply having a vampire as a character doesn't put it in the "vampire" so much as "action" genre for me personally. And at best, it's just could be broadly coined a "vampire" movie. If there are vampire sub-genres, i'd say they include these: Simply has vampires, Vampires as "monsters" that the main character has to destroy or get away from, Life as a vampire/becoming a vampire, Bram Stoker based stuff, vampire camp.

Do you watch zombie movies? Have you seen Fido? I liked the movie a good bit. But if someone told me they liked zombie movies, I'd think along the line of the George A. Romero movies and remakes. I wouldn't necessarily recommend Fido to that person. Sure, it has zombies in it, but it's a very different kind of movie. Now, I would recommend the book World War Z. Similarly with Shaun of the Dead. Really good movie. Good comedy and a good zombie flick. But I wouldn't necessarily expect someone who told me they liked that movie to even be interested in Romero movies.

The vampires and werewolves in underworld could be replaced with two families, people from two different neighborhoods... almost anything really. The underworld movies don't have much to do with vampires or werewolves so much as the war between them and the action that goes along with it. The appeal of those movies is bad-assery and a hot ass chick in a skin tight outfit. And don't get me wrong, I like the underworld movies. And I liked the first blade, maybe even the second (don't remember it too well). But I look at them as action movies first and foremost, not "vampire movies." Vampires are somewhat trendy/bankable i guess. And the super-strength, healing, etc. lends itself to action movies very well. Those movies are about choreographed fight scenes and a certain imagery, nothing more - and that's fine by me.

And in regard to Underworld; if someone told me they really liked underworld, I think i'd be more likely to recommend Blade, The Matrix, or Resident Evil than 30 Days of Night, Nosferatu, Thirst, Lost Boys, etc. Those are all very different "vampire" movies. But to me, aside from simply having vampires, Underworld has a more similar appeal to The Matrix or Resident Evil than those other movies.
