The lady that I adopted my Bull Terrier from has a bunch of dogs in need of a good home. People are surrendering/abandoning their dogs like crazy these days and she is swamped. I think she has five at her home right now in need of adoption. This breed has a very tough time in shelters because they are lumped in with Pit Bulls. They almost never get adopted out of shelters and are often euthanized.
I love these dogs and my dog is awesome. They are super playful and goofy. They have great personalities and usually are pretty quiet. They are great companions. The lady I adopted from does a great job and is very straight forward in evaluating the dog and your situation to see if there is a good match. This isn't a "come get the dog, it's awesome" type of operation. She really makes sure that you and the dog match up well.
Please help these awesome dogs out. If you are interested, I have the contact info and I'd be happy to answer any question that anyone may have about the breed or the adoption process. Thanks everyone and here is a pic of my adopted dog I got last September.

Oh shit, my mom wants one of these...eventually. Dunno if they'd be open to taking one now but I'll ask.
Are they puppies or full grown already? Pics? 6/18/2010 4:58:23 AM |

It varies. She is always getting new ones in mostly out of south florida, usually full grown. My dog was about five when I got him. I don't know all the details of what she has right now. I did this unsolicited, but I know she is always looking for good homes for these great dogs. Let me know if you have any interest. 6/18/2010 6:45:31 AM |

can you give a little rundown on the adoption process? Fees, requirements, etc. 6/18/2010 9:15:01 AM |
SchndlrsFist All American 5528 Posts user info edit post |
There is an "interview" process so that they can tell that you will be a good match for the dog. They don't want to set up an adoption to find out later that the person wasn't ready for a dog or lied about their living situation. There is an application/questionnaire that you'll fill out as well. After that, if a match is made and the dog's health is up to snuff, the adoption goes through with a donation to "Bull Terrier Rescue." This is a tax deductable donation to cover medical costs and care expenses. In my case it was $250, I believe. All dogs are spayed/neutered before adoption.
It's a thourough process that takes care of both sides of the adoption. These people really care about these dogs. 6/18/2010 9:26:18 AM |

Just found out she has three more scheduled to be surrendered to her by owners who can't afford their dogs anymore coming in in the next couple weeks. That will make a total of 7 that need good homes. Here are a couple of the bullies that need homes.
Male pup loves kids! Does well with females. Loves to play ball...
Responsible parents needed for a young girl. (10 months old)

He does understand that Bull Terriers aren't Pitt Bulls, right? Or does he not allow anything with bull in the title? Are bull dogs also off the table?
I hate when people associate this breed with Pit Bulls. They are COMPLETELY different breeds. 6/21/2010 5:04:17 PM |

not just pit bulls...just any bully breed....so yeah, bulldogs off the table, bull terriers, staffordshire terriers, pit bulls, etc. my landlord may not personally have anything against the breeds, but i do know that a lot of times your home owners insurance goes up if you have those types of dogs. 6/21/2010 5:30:22 PM |

4-5 year old, tri-colored female, would be fine with a submissive male. Great with kids.

Your homeowners' insurance would be completely dropped for one of these? Wow, people must think they are the same thing as a pit bull. Seems like one look would dispel that.

I was surprised to see chows and huskies on there. I am a firm believer its in how you raise the dog but what can you do
Also where a buddy of mines sister lives, I think Florida, and has a pit. She has to maintain $1,000,000 in insurance to keep it

Chows do have a reputation for being aggressive. I didn't think Huskies or Akitas did though, let alone Bull Terriers.
True, it's how you raise the dog that determines temperament, not some sort of internal viciousness quotient. Don't know how well that would work on a coyote or a wolf mix though! 6/23/2010 12:31:31 AM |

Akitas are guard dogs, but because they are fluffy most people treat them like kid's toys and very bad things happen. To get around any restrictions I plan to adopt a mixed breed and not mention it's a police drop out.
Insurance cares because homeowner's insurance also includes general personal liability. This covers if your dog bites someone. 6/27/2010 2:58:43 PM |

Harley is a huge slut. He has to be on someone's lap pretty much at all times. He sleeps under the covers, usually across my legs (I'm going to have to do something about this).
He is so awesome. I was told he was VERY relaxed for a bull terrier and I am so thankful that he is. He is totally content to lay around for the majority of the day, save a couple walks and a few runs around the backyard.

He loves people, you're welcome to play with him!
Other dogs, on the other hand... bad news. I took him out on the leash the other day and a neighbor was walking his lab retriever. Harley almost pulled out of his leash. I had to get down on my knees and grab his collar with one hand and wrap my other arm around him until they passed and he chilled out. Getting him to be cool with other dogs is really the only thing I need to work with him on.
Also, I need to get him a ship captain's uniform. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OwnwBwTg4c 7/1/2010 11:35:18 AM |

^Haha, Harley and Grendel are twins. Your description is identical to my bully. He is lazy as shit and sleeps approximately 23 hours a day with the occassional 5 minute freakout. He loves people and is a total attention whore. He loves to sleep on my feet or smashed up against me. And, he hates other dogs except for tiny dogs and puppies which he pretty much ignores. If you figure out a way to socialize Harley, please let me know.

I watched an episode the other day about socializing dogs (not the dog whisperer) but they basically held a treat against the dog's snout while another dog walked by and they kept doing it over and over until the dog completely ignored the other dog and then they relinquished the treat. 7/9/2010 4:53:42 PM |

They have very short coarse hair. They don't shed technically. Their hair comes out just like yours or mine. As long as you brush them for a minute or so every couple days, they are fine.
Temperament from wikipedia:
Quote : | "Though this breed was once known as fierce gladiator, it is much gentler today. A Bull Terrier might have a preventive effect and it will certainly defend its owner in a truly critical situation. Bull terriers are known to be courageous, scrappy, fun-loving, active, clownish and fearless. The Bull Terrier tends to be a loyal and polite dog. They become very attached to their owners. The Bull Terrier thrives on firm, consistent leadership and affection. They generally like to stay occupied, and fit in well with active families where they receive a great deal of companionship and supervision. They tend not do well in situations where they are left alone for 8 hours a day. This breed can be a wonderful pet if very thoroughly socialized and trained, but not recommended for most households. They are fond of people of all ages, but if they do not get enough physical and mental exercise they may be too energetic for small children. Children should be taught how to display leadership towards the dog. Meek owners will find them to become very protective, willful, possessive and/or jealous. Bull Terriers may try to join into family rough housing or quarrel. Bull Terriers generally must be given a lot of structure. Unless the owner can ensure socialization and constantly maintain a pack leader mentality, they can be extremely aggressive with other dogs. Unaltered males may not get along with other male dogs. Males and females can live together happily, and two females can also be a good combination with care and supervision. They are not recommended with other non-canine pets such as cats, hamsters, and guinea pigs. They can make excellent watch dogs." |
My experience is that my dog is super chill 95% of the time with 5% crazy-energy time. He doesn't like other dogs, especially big dogs. He has a strong prey instict so he wants to chase cats squirrels, etc. He is very loyal and follows me around everywhere. He likes to lean/push on me and loves to be a lap dog or sit on my feet. He is very quiet except when he is guarding. When the y do bark, it's really loud. he will also talk to me (growlie talk). In talks with Ronny, our dogs sound very similar. Also, any dog adopted through the people I know are ALWAYS fixed before the adoption so that isn't an issue.
Any help would be appreciated. I am happy to answer any questions you may have or provide as much information that I can.7/28/2010 10:52:29 AM |

SchndlrsFist - Thank you for helping our breed find new homes! I rescued my Tri-color bitch a while ago and wouldn't trade her for the world. Anyone interested in this breed MUST do their research. They are not a breed for everyone - so please don't think that you should get one just because they look cool. They are hard headed, stubborn and can be hard to train. You must work hard at socializing them properly, and utilize training resources as necessary. If anyone has any questions regarding this breed please ask (c:
The reason why this breed is so rare, is that most breeders are very picky at placing them in good homes. It's a shame that so many are coming into rescue now - be it economic reasons, or they get them and not realize how much goes into training them. I wish I could take in more, but one EBT is enough for a 2 bedroom apartment! (c; 8/8/2010 1:10:40 AM |
