NC State Announces New Lineup For Coaches' TV Shows

http://www.gopack.com/genrel/082510aac.html

"Aug. 25, 2010

RALEIGH, N.C. — The NC State Department of Athletics and Wolfpack Sports Marketing announced today an expanded schedule and coverage for the NC State coaches’ television programs.

The return of weekly TV shows featuring football coach Tom O’Brien and men’s basketball coach Sidney Lowe highlight the expanded lineup. Each week, the O’Brien and Lowe shows will include special game highlights and coaches’ analysis along with interesting player features.

Get a 30-minute preview of NC State’s upcoming football season this Sunday night, Aug. 29, when the Tom O’Brien Show presented by BB&T makes its season debut on TV stations all across the state of North Carolina. Along with Coach O’Brien’s analysis of the upcoming season, this week’s show will include a visit with new NC State Director of Athletics Deborah A. Yow.

In addition to the coaches’ shows, Wolfpack Football Fast Forward has been added to the NC State TV lineup for this fall. Wolfpack Football Fast Forward will feature every play from the previous weekend’s game along with Gary Hahn’s play-by-play call from the Wolfpack Sports Network, all conveniently delivered in an hour-long format.

NC State already has the most-watched coaches’ shows in the Triangle, and the new TV lineup will receive expanded coverage in 2010-11. Fans in the Triangle will have two opportunities to watch the O’Brien and Lowe shows.

WRAL TV-5 in Raleigh will continue to carry both shows at 11:35 p.m. on Sundays throughout the year, and NC State this fall will become the only area school to have its coaches’ shows available locally to viewers during prime time.

WRAL2, channel 106 on the Time-Warner Cable digital cable lineup, will air the O’Brien and Lowe shows at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday. WRAL2 also can be picked up with a digital television antenna in non-cable households on channel 5.2.

Wolfpack Football Fast Forward will air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on WRAZ2, which is channel 151 on the Time-Warner Cable digital cable lineup. WRAZ2 can be picked up with a digital television antenna in non-cable households on channel 50.2.

The Tom O’Brien Show will re-air this season early in the week on regional sports networks Fox Sports South and MASN.

Both coaches’ shows and Wolfpack Football Fast Forward will be available to viewers worldwide on GoPack.com each week under the All-Access subscription plan.

The Tom O’Brien Show will make its 2010 debut on Sunday, Aug. 29. The first date for the Wolfpack Football Fast Forward is Tuesday, Sept. 7.

“We’re delighted to add these two new prime-time broadcasts to our already strong Wolfpack Sports Network lineup,” said Brian Asbill, general manager of Wolfpack Sports Marketing. “The additional Sunday evening time period on WRAL2 allows us to expand viewership for our coaches’ shows while the new Wolfpack Football Fast Forward on WRAZ2 provides fans with a more in-depth game review.”"

I really think they should spin that into a positive. Have cheerleaders with wolp fack signs and stuff. It'd be humorous and make the spelling error seem not-as-big a deal to our school.

+2000 cred points to Yow...Fowler would have taken 2000 seats away because I would have thought he could sell more to a paying crowd for a national game

Attention Debbie Yow: Asking students if we want to raise the amount in student fees we pay during a recession and the fact that tuition went up by like a grand last year, is VERY MISGUIDED!
This article says that we are next to last in the ACC in terms of the amount NCSU students pay for student athletic fees, but across the board in the ACC, we EASILY have one of the TOP THREE in the ACC when it comes to athletic facilities...so dont come to us asking about raising student athletic fees for ATLEAST another 5 years!!!

NCSU studies fees

BY KEN TYSIAC - Staff Writer

N.C. State athletic officials presented their case to students Wednesday for raising the school's student fees for athletic operational costs in a meeting at the campus recreation building.

Athletic director Debbie Yow said her department is proposing a $33 increase that would raise the fee to $192.50 per year. N.C. State's current student athletic fee of $159.50 ranks seventh among the eight ACC public schools, ahead of only Clemson's, according to data N.C. State has compiled.

Yow is seeking ways to increase N.C. State's per-sport expenditures. A compilation of 2008-09 data provided by schools on their federal Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act forms shows N.C. State ranked 11th in the ACC in per-sport spending at $2,289,818 per sport.

N.C. State's student athletic fee is the lowest in the UNC system. The University of North Carolina's is next to last at $271 a year. East Carolina's is $526 a year, according to UNC system records.

Nonetheless, N.C. State student body president Kelly Hook is wary of any fee increase.

"I understand the importance of athletics and how athletics is the front porch to our university," Hook said, "but at the same time, in lieu of last year's $900 tuition increase and in light of what will inevitably be a tuition increase this year, I am uncomfortable with any fee increases at all."

In a meeting with The News & Observer and Charlotte Observer staff members Wednesday, Yow explained the economic pressures the athletic department is facing. Yow would like N.C. State's per-sport spending to reach the ACC average, which was $2,625,809 in 2008-09.

The athletic department would have to add more than $7 million to the overall budget to do that. Yow said the ACC's new television contract, which takes effect in 2010-11, will add a "badly needed" $3.9 million to the school's athletic budget, with an escalation of 4 percent each year afterward.

But the other ACC schools will receive the same boost in TV revenue. Yow said additional revenue for N.C. State in the future could come from football, basketball and baseball tickets; apparel licensing; multi-media rights, and student fees.

She was asked if she was squeamish about asking for more money from students in a difficult economy.

"Sure, absolutely, no question," she said.

Yow said N.C. State also is going to offer the studentbody more tickets for football (750) and men's basketball (1,000) as it asks students for more money. Yow said Chancellor Randy Woodson eventually would make a recommendation to the school's board of trustees on the issue.

Despite the athletic department's financial difficulties, Yow said she doesn't foresee dropping any sports. An announcement Tuesday that California is dropping five varsity sports sent shock waves through college athletics.

That's not something N.C. State is considering, according to Yow, but she also doesn't foresee adding sports. She said she has heard from numerous fans interested in adding men's lacrosse in part because of Maryland's success in that sport during her tenure there.

"With the per-sport expenditure, we need to do a much better job of taking care of what we have, the current student-athletes, instead of adding," Yow said.

Yow said that her predecessor, Lee Fowler, left the school's athletic facilities in good shape but that an estimated $38 million in additional facilities improvements still need to be made.

After $120 million in building during Fowler's tenure, though, Yow said she is wary of "donor fatigue" among Wolfpack donors who have been asked to give a lot. So she will use a targeted donation approach.

For example, she said the N.C. State tennis program needs two additional courts. Yow envisions asking the school's tennis alumni to donate toward an improvement that would add two courts.

But Wolfpack Club members aren't the only ones suffering from financial fatigue. N.C. State students' tuition rose from $3,953 in 2009-10 to $4,853 in 2010-11.

Hook said she understands the value of athletics but said students are stretched financially.

"While I appreciate and respect where they're coming from, speaking for all students, we're all a little uncomfortable with a fee increase," Hook said.

They should throw a $25 a semester fee on there for capital improvements in my opnion. Would love to have an extra million dollars a semester to re-do something on campus, build something, add art work, re-do dorms, bookstore, landscaping, etc.

here's an idea: become a winner in football (in the process), and use the money we are paid for going to a bowl game/acc championship game, and all the money associated with that, to help cover the proposed fee increase. Spread it around other sports that need it. It's basically Warren Buffett's investment principle applied to sports.

When success is found in one area, spread its returns across other investments to achieve growth across the board.

Any benchmarks that we meet in athletics that warrant bonuses for both coaches and Debbie Yow would provide all of them an opportunity to use that money for re-investment, not simply hoarding it for their personal wealth. They make enough.

It would be absolutely monumental for an athletic director to do that. Lead by example.

You guys do realize that all bowl proceeds are spread out amongst all the ACC schools don't you? The participating team gets a payout off the top (about $1.5M for BCS bowls) and the rest is shared.

A $33 increase is a fucking drop in the bucket in comparison to all the other costs of attending college. Students should be pissed off about a $900/yr increase, but $33/yr won't mean shit in the grand scheme of your college loans/debt. I am not a student anymore, but I certainly would not be putting up a big fuss over this when there are much big fish to fry regarding other cost increases.

You are not thinking about the big picture. EVERYONE, including kids with money with parents that will donate, want to go to a school that wins. Also, people donate to a university when they receive positive publicity. A winning team does more financially for a university than academics does.

"Loosely, it gives us a chance to tell the story of the university and all the positives that go on," Yow said. "I think many people would say wehaven't done a terrific job of doing that, and that's a campus initiative.""

"So my younger brother (now a senior) failed to get tickets to the VT game despite going through the lottery and standing in the pouring rain for three hours.
Needless to say he was pretty upset as he has been to every home game since he was a freshman and didn’t want to miss such a huge game. He decided to email the athletic department about some of the problems he sees with the ticketing system (as a recent graduate I can attest to these problems). About an hour later he got an email back from Debbie Yow herself explaining that she agrees and is working to correct the ticketing problems starting next year.
At this point he was already impressed and responded with another email about how he was grateful she was listening to the student body. Another hour later he gets another email from Debbie telling him that she secured a ticket for him and that he should come by her office to pick it up."
