looks like there was a little leak. No solid screenshots, just planning phase.

[quote]ncluded in these presentations is a rather telling (but obvious) slide which shows that Microsoft is clearly paying attention to Apple while planning Windows 8. Titled, “How Apple does it: A virtuous cycle,” Microsoft has broken down Apple’s UX/Brand Loyalty cycle and cited its value. Though it’s fairly obvious, the takeaway here is that Microsoft is aiming to give Windows the very same “it just works” status that Apple’s products are known for:

I can't believe they're just getting around to looking at Apple's "It just works" success.

They aren't. Keep in mind this apparently leaked from an HP partner, not an employee. Still funny seeing some of this stuff though 6/29/2010 10:30:17 AM |

When those "millions of people" equate to 8% of the market, it really is "not enough".6/29/2010 11:18:34 AM |

you're right, that 8% definitely doesn't cover all the use cases 6/29/2010 12:25:06 PM |

Apple has always done a great job of keeping a tight grasp on the hardware, and controlling the environment thier software runs in.
Microsoft has a unique situation in its open minded view on hardware. The market is littered with mom and pop companies creating motherboards, add-ins, etc. You get consumers buying them because they are cheap, then blaming microsoft when windows blows up. The general public doesn't understand that a poorly written driver/firmware can crash the entire system like the people in this forum do.
Blocking direct hardware access from code, signed drivers, etc.. is just the path Microsoft has taken, instead of Apple's "it's our hardware, bitch" approach. In my opinion, its the longer, harder path to follow, but I think it will win out in the end. Microsoft will eventually get to the point where the framework for the OS is so bulletproof, they can deal with the nastiness spewed by the Xing-Wa Sparkle Technologies network card throws at it.
They also have years and years of "windows crashes all the time" mentality to break out of.
I think Apple has also started loosening its death grip on the hardware in the past few years, and is going to start running into a lot of the issues Microsoft has already had experience in handling. 6/29/2010 1:04:33 PM |

nah, apple still maintains the death grip on its hardware, they just have a few more things in said death grip.
Also, I don't completely agree with the "it just works" perception. It's really only applicable to the things that apple has end to end control over usually just works, namely basic everyday type applications like browsing, email, and consuming content. Since the vast majority of end/home users don't venture too far away from the aforementioned use cases, the perception of "it just works" was created.
Apple was years ahead of MS in making their machines and applications geared towards ease of consuming, managing and manipulating digital media. I think Windows has caught up for the most part, but the perception issue will take years of good execution to overcome.
Hell the best thing MS can do is start writing and publishing OSX malware. 6/29/2010 1:38:52 PM |

With 'Windows 8' Leak, Microsoft Gets Its Very Own Gray Powell http://blogs.forbes.com/velocity/2010/06/29/with-windows-8-leak-microsoft-gets-its-very-own-gray-powell/
That's gotta be really strange for Gray to have his legacy being that his name has become a synonym for accidental leak.
But also kinda cool at the same time. 6/29/2010 4:04:30 PM |

^ that's not a case of being broken so much as it is a case of not being physically capable of doing so. It's also my biggest beef with apple by far.
^^ The point is that there are a very select few hardware variations that apple has to code for, which is a huge advantage. Windows has to support thousands of different pieces of hardware with their own drivers, many of which are poorly written and cause system instability, and ultimately the users blame the OS. 6/30/2010 12:00:51 AM |

iphone os 4 doesn't resolve .local dns tlds. Apple's solution: change your domain to use something else.
