Yes, it's a shame that Daily Kos was defrauded by a polling company.
Quote : | "We contracted with Research 2000 to conduct polling and to provide us with the results of their surveys. Based on the report of the statisticians, it's clear that we did not get what we paid for. We were defrauded by Research 2000, and while we don't know if some or all of the data was fabricated or manipulated beyond recognition, we know we can't trust it. Meanwhile, Research 2000 has refused to offer any explanation. Early in this process, I asked for and they offered to provide us with their raw data for independent analysis -- which could potentially exculpate them. That was two weeks ago, and despite repeated promises to provide us that data, Research 2000 ultimately refused to do so. At one point, they claimed they couldn't deliver them because their computers were down and they had to work out of a Kinkos office." |
So is the premise of this thread to childishly point and laugh when fraud is committed?6/29/2010 5:21:39 PM |

^ Well, it is unfortunate that Daily Kos was defrauded. But what's clear is that they put out untrustworthy information.
And the incident in question goes to judgment--you get what you pay for. Caveat emptor.

If anything, it ought to cause a LOT of polling customers to question the veracity of results they've been receiving, not merely Daily Kos or liberal blog sites. Yeah, it makes Daily Kos look bad, but not for the inaccurate data themselves. 6/29/2010 5:30:04 PM |

^ Yes, but do you know how much of a background check Kos conducted on the research company? And did Kos ever visit their offices or conduct audits of any sort? As I indicated, this goes to judgment.
I mean, the research company was operating out of a Kinko's? Doesn't sound very solid to me.

Isn't the Daily Kos one of those tea party websites? 6/29/2010 5:43:13 PM |

^^ That's pretty much what I meant, yeah. Perhaps now's a good time for a lot of media outlets to be doing a double check of their data analysis and polling. Considering that the fraud has supposedly been going on for a while, I'd wonder a bit more about the due diligence that was conducted (assuming that it was done, of course). Was it a question of Daily Kos operators being negligent in their background checking, or was the fraud that good? We probably need to know more before we could determine fault and blame.

^^ Yes, and as I indicated, it goes to the judgment of Kos concerning checking out a firm doing research for them on a long-term basis.
