While I hate the Yankees and their spend to win strategy, Steinbrenner was good for baseball and every fan wishes their owner would do what Steinbrenner did (i.e. do whatever it takes to win).

yeah all the hate for Steinbrenner needs to go elsewhere. He might have come across as a jerk, but by all accounts he was quite the philanthropist and would do anything to help his team succeed

I've seen trolling before and even enjoyed reading some of it, but this is a tad too soon and too far. All because the guy spent too much money on his baseball team, big fuckin deal

He absolutely lived for winning. You cannot deny that. Nothing mattered as long as the Yanks won. Money was second to winning for the Boss.

Every sports fan would kill to have an owner like Georgie run their team. He did whatever it took to build a winner.

RIP Boss

everyone forgets this (or doesn't know), but steinbrenner was nailed for all kinds of political corruption in watergate and got a sweetheart no-jail plea deal because they had bigger fish to fry. if bowie kuhn had a sack he'd have been banned from baseball before most of us were born.

And he was temporarily banned from baseball for trying to dig up dirt on Dave Winfield and this pretty much directly led to the dynasty of the late 90's... Most of us, especially the Yankees fans, know this...

But I see no need to troll people about someone who has recently died. You certainly don't have to respect him, pay your respects to him or praise him in any way but the trolling is just low-brow...

As a Mets fan, the team whom he hated more than any team in baseball, I have nothing but respect for what the team did under his ownership. He was a shrewd businessman above all.

His sons are going to be more of a monster than he ever was.

He earned his fortune and worked his way up. His sons were born into it and have a sense of entitlement.

The worst is yet to come.

uh, no. i'm saying good riddance to steinbrenner because i think the guy was a complete jackass. i just threw that fun fact in there since all you ever hear about him is "omg he was such a great owner and did this and that and loved the yankees and winning and blah blah blah." he also got drunk on winning after that dynasty era in the late 90s and is the reason why every big ticket free agent was signed earlier in this decade regardless of how well they did (or did not) address the yankees' biggest needs and took his anger out on his employees, cashman especially, when the team failed down the stretch, arguably because of george getting involved where he didn't belong. i also partially attribute the whole argument that baseball needs a salary cap to george steinbrenner's antics with the yankees. but excuse me for having an opinion.

hank never wanted anything to do with the yankees out of fear of becoming like his father in his late stages of yankee ownership. then that's pretty much what happened once he took over. hal actually seems like a pretty cool guy from an interview i read with him a few years ago.

Never liked the guy, thought he was a bit of a jerk, but he did whatever it took to win and was the type of owner you want to have for your team. You know that it had to come sometime though, he hasn't been near as prominent out in public as he used to be.

Even if you don't like the guy he will be missed one way or another. I didn't like the Yankees at all but he was a good villain to have in baseball for all of us who like teams with owners who don't spend that kind of money. RIP.

yeah, baseball really needed an owner that pushed spending so high only a few teams have a reasonable shot of contending on a regular basis. and it also needed an owner who treated his players like shit and hired degenerate gamblers to dig up dirt on people who crossed him

the yankees didn't get turned around until he got banned from running them in the early 90's. he was detrimental to his own team until someone unfucked his mistakes in his absence

This has been brought up and addressed a thousand times on here. It's incorrect. A casual glance at the standings right now and you would see that (see Tampa, Minnesota, San Diego, etc, etc).

Baseball, with it's six-year control rule, is inherently set up to close the gap between the big markets and the small markets. The vast majority of the small market teams that suck only do so because they have either shitty ownership or make shitty decisions.

2009 - Rockies, Cardinals and Twins were in the bottom half in payroll and made the playoffs.
2008 - Rays and Brewers were in the bottom half and made the playoffs.
2007 - Cleveland, Arizona and Colorado were all in the bottom third in payroll and made the playoffs.
2006 - Minnesota, Oakland and San Diego were all in the bottom half in payroll and made the playoffs.

Consistently, year after year, small market teams not only compete but make the playoffs at a high rate.

To be fair, only Minnesota and Colorado appear twice on that list, and neither one in back to back years

The point being, its much harder to form a CONSISTENT winning team with limited funds...when your margin of error is smaller, teams that make the playoffs barely make it, by a game or two, so when they regress to the mean to the next year, they'll find themselves out of the postseason. They don't have that cushion of not playing their best and still winning 95 games like the Yankees or Sox.

At the same time, not a one of those 11 teams won it all and only Tampa and Colorado advanced to the W.S.

Only the Yankees really have the money to cover up their mistakes. Even the Mets and Red Sox can't do that which is why they adhere to budgets relatively close to their peers in the league.

And in the last decade the Marlins and Diamondbacks have won titles, and when the White Sox won they were 14th in payroll.

All I'm saying is that it's possible. Fans of teams like the Royals and Pirates want to bitch and whine but the fact is that they are hampered by poor decisions more than anything else. The A's, until recently, were in it nearly every single year. As have been the Twins.

** and everyone knows that winning in the playoffs takes a fair degree of luck.

Sure it is possible. But probable? No, of course not. Everyone likes to hate good teams that win a lot. People don't like the Pats, but they are legit and they play by the same rules as everyone else (please spare me on the videotaping thing that everyone does but they got caught on). Same goes with the Lakers. But the Yankees are good solely because they do not play by the same rules as everyone else. If other teams have a glaring weakness or an injury, they most likely have to pull of some huge trade (which weakens them for the future,) play with some utility man off the bench, or bring up some rookie from the minors. The Yankees, on the other hand, will just throw a fuckwad of cash at the best player on the market and bring him in. It's ridiculous and the number one reason why everyone hates them. If you want to argue that is good for the game..... well, I think it's a pretty bad argument.
