Quote :
"CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Inside Carolina has learned that the University of North Carolina’s football program is under investigation by the NCAA.

“I can acknowledge that representatives from the NCAA have been to Chapel Hill to speak with some of our student-athletes,” UNC athletic director Dick Baddour told Inside Carolina on Thursday afternoon.

“One of the things that they instructed us in very clearly is that we are to maintain the confidence of their visit and their review. They’ve requested that we not discuss it publicly. Obviously, we’re going to fully cooperate with the NCAA in every way that we can by making things available to them and in particular by following their instruction on discussing it publicly.”

Inside Carolina's sources indicate that those "student-athletes" include members of the football program.

Baddour could not confirm that the football program is involved, nor could he provide any detail into what the investigation concerns or how long the process would ultimately take to conclude.

Inside Carolina has been able to confirm through its sources that the investigation is not academic-related.

The UNC football program enters the fourth year of Butch Davis's tenure as head coach with lofty expectations for the 2010 season. The Tar Heels are coming off back-to-back 8-5 seasons and will likely be ranked in the preseason top-25 nationally.

Defensive tackle Marvin Austin, defensive end Robert Quinn and linebacker Quan Sturdivant highlight a roster loaded with NFL talent and returning eight All-ACC players from '09. "

Most are hearing that it is related to player-agent contact.

^ won't happen. We all know that the worst to come of this would be that the NCAA announces some 'future sanctions' that never come to fruition. It wouldn't matter how bad the crime, the penalty would be nothing

I'm admittedly pretty ignorant of the process and how long it takes but don't these investigations and the punishment(assuming there are any violations) take a little while to develope. In other words, would it even be possible for this to affect the 2010 season?

IF its something major and its found to be true, I think they'd get some harsh punishments. If the NCAA is willing to come down on a powerhouse football program like Southern Cal, I don't think they would hesitate to come down on a football program like UNC's. Of course it could be nothing serious.

At least now we can blame their awesome recruiting this year on cheating, instead of on us sucking it up.

I think he means a consistently competitive bbal and football school, with great academics

better academics than UNC, and generally better football

Texas has high level bball and football, and good academics

football makes money for the schools, and for the BCS, but not so much for the NCAA.

16 straight 1st place finishes in the Director's Cup ... they straight up dominate. They win it all with about 7,000 undergraduates to the 30,000+ that the rest of their competition has to pull from. They do this all while maintaining elite academic status on a worldwide scale.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sears_Cup#NCAA_Division_I

They are perfect.

Regardless of how many championships they've won in non-revenue sports, their FOOTBALL program could hardly be described as the signature one.

Well I'm honestly surprised that something like this is happening to UNC, who always seems to come out of everything smelling like roses. I just knew there was no way they could go from nobodies to recruiting over established football schools without something going on.

But either way, it's UNC so there's only two possible outcomes: nothing's going on (don't laugh, it's entirely possible) or it's something petty like players selling their shoes and tickets (wonder what kind of penalty they'd get for that).

When you combine overall athletic programs, academics, and maybe most importantly brand name/marketing I stand by statement. I forgot to add general faggotry.

USC doesn't have the Commissioner's office in it's back pocket (Swoffy). I doubt USC has the media in their back pocket like UNC, (read , NandO, CO). Paul Dee is the head of this NCAA department, the guy who hired Davis at Miami years ago, they are friends. Baddour is good at this, his rolodex could get his programs out of anything. Reggie Bush's intelligent father was on tape talking directly about the car that was given to him, it's on tape, don't know how more flagrant it gets.
