I have a 60GB PS3 that has not been updated to the version of firmware that kills the "other OS" option.
In your opinion, how valuable might this be in the future? I know a lot of universities and other groups use the PS3 for research. Theoretically, as their PS3s die, they may need to replace them with old-firmware models.
I believe the 60GB commands a marginally higher premium on eBay than other models. Would it be even more valuable with the old firmware?
I've always intended to sell it at some point, maybe once the PS3 slim drops below $200. 7/18/2010 7:53:09 PM |

The only PS3's that are worth a premium are the ones that are backwards compatible. 7/18/2010 8:10:33 PM |

I updated my 60GB PS3 to the latest firmware. The Other OS feature is useless to me.
If you have contacts that are in university research that would make use of this, you may want to go ahead and seek them out and see if they'll want to take it as is now (as a backup unit). Otherwise, go ahead and update it if you plan on using it for anything that requires an internet connection. 7/18/2010 11:46:49 PM |

If you're using it for research you should have a method to flash units to whatever firmware you're using without needing the connection to sony. Who wants to update, say, 500 units walking around with a monitor and a controller

If you're not gonna sell that hot mess, you may as well update it so you can continue to enjoy the benefits of the PSN. Hulu Plus!
also hot damn if you don't actually use your ps3 sell that gem to someone, buy a 250-GB slim, and profit son 7/19/2010 8:35:44 AM |

It's valuable because it (and the 20GB) is the only model that does perfect PS2 backwards compatibility. OtherOS is valuable to no one. The universities and research groups that use it have their PS3s supplied to them and supported directly by Sony, so they won't need one off Ebay.
With that said, if you have no need for PS2 BC, I would definitely sell it and get a Slim. 7/19/2010 8:44:35 AM |

Well, maybe he needs all the nifty card readers and extra USB ports. 7/19/2010 8:51:43 AM |
