OK, I'm going to Florida tomorrow to buy a car from somebody who wants to deal with only ca$h, to buy a 911 from them. It had to be ordered in advance, they will require a few signatures and a notary. Seems like this sort of thing doesn't happen very often... Anybody here make large purchases in cash?

I've never handled over $6-7k or so in cash. This is a rather bigger purchase, I feel like if it was enough of a common occurrence they wouldn't want a security guard, advance notice, a notary, and a specified time +fax a home branch... Seems shady. I don't mind the CTR form though, I'm not doing anything illegal. After all the government already knows how I paid for my house, etc. If anything, it might help me prove I paid this guy...

Certified check is easier, but if he demands cash and you can find a branch of your bank down there, just go to the bank, make the withdrawal and notarize the title on the spot.

The last time I made a $3k withdrawal my bank acted like I was robbing them. All the managers came out, they had to break out the nuclear keys you turn at the same time and everything. They also tried to quiz me on what it was for.

i deposited a $9500 check once and asked for $4000 back in cash. Oddly enough it took them a while to come up with that much cash in one spot (kept going to various drawers and what not) but the bank never questioned it why I needed the cash.

I would definitely deal with a certified check before I walked into a deal with someone carrying ~$20k in cash. (about the cost of a used 911 right now, I have no idea what you're paying and not my business anyway)

just cover your ass. seems too shady and you could easily be asking for some trouble traveling across state lines multiple times with a wad of cash.

how about a wire transfer? seems less risky.

I flew to FL once to buy a $15k vehicle, carried about $4K in cash with me and once we were down there drove the vehicle to the bank and just transferred the rest from my account to the sellers. Super easy.

Yea, it's a bit more than that. I'm not carrying anything in cash with me -$31- is what's in my wallet I think... I will probably hit an ATM and get a bit to cover a cab ride but that's about it. The bank will have the cash, I wouldn't carry more than a few hundred dollars on my person. They needed an advance like I said, and will have cash delivered, and all this other hoopla. It is a branch of my bank indeed. There will have to be government disclosure forms as well.

I know cash is secure, it's just odd this guy won't even accept a cashiers check made out in front of him, at the bank...

Anyway, I will not be carrying cash with me through the whole thing, cash will only be pulled out of the bank at the time of the title being signed over, that's it. I'm meeting him at the bank (cab to bank, test drive from bank, back to the bank for paperwork/transaction).

I intend to, I've heard so many things from this guy, changing phone numbers, 2 different addresses, history of having scammed people even (but not for anything this large). I guess it'll be an adventure. He'd told me he's got a few months left to live (cancer), that he had kidney failure, as well as a heart attack (the latter two being the reasons for his previous two cancellations hours before my flights were to take off). I just found a craigslist ad by him asking for a trade on the car for a motorcycle, which has the obvious implication that he's full of it again. Maybe I should make a blog about this...

I bought a boat for $10k from a guy who really wanted cash and nothing but cash. He was a builder in the Chatham County area. I suspect he was in a financial crunch and looking at bankruptcy so he wanted to stash away as much cash as possible before filing and having his assets analyzed. I just met him at the bank, did the notary work, withdrew the cash, and handed it to him in the bank.

I did try to cash a $7200 check at the SECU on Centennial a couple months ago and they told me they didn't have enough money. I don't really believe that shit though. I think they were just being lazy and didn't want to go to the safe. How can you not have enough money for seven customers to come in and take out a grand each?

Beyond just secruity concerns (either in route or the seller ripping you off), I'd be concerned about the law.

I have heard quite a few anecdotal stories about cops pulling people over (for speeding or such), seizing what they see is a briefcase of cash, and making the individual guilty until proven innocent that the money is not drug cash.

Definitely a gorgeous car.

Seems like you cant buy a car nowadays without something seeming fishy. Main issues:

Cash: For the seller is great, for the buyer its a little risky carrying alot plus proving that you paid them. What info do you need to make the deal? Drivers license? Contract? You can have them sign the title but most times I have bought a car or bike a notary isnt open, happens after the fact.

Any form of check: Great for a seller, proves you paid. Bad for the seller, what if the check bounces, difficult to guarantee funds. Even using something like paypal, the seller has the ability to dispute the transaction if something isnt delivered by curiour.

Most I can think of I have ever paid cash is about $7000. Was buying the bike in a different state, out in the boonies. On the plus side I was armed.

Im not aware of anything other than a broker that is guaranteed. This is what my father usually deals in or through dealers or contacts that can verify the legitimacy of a seller or buyer.

As an example. Just sold my Bronco. Guy from Boston bought it, Bronco nut, cant find a non rusty ass one up north. Anyway.

Deal ended up being:
$700 paypal
$900 cash delivered by his brother in law who flew to charlotte for business to drive it back for him. (couldnt carry too much cash on the plane) Also have all his info, DL, etc....
$2300 in certified check, but the bank can never truely guarantee the funds. am supposed to send the title via certified mail when the check clears. I will probably send it this week. (Been two weeks since I got the check)

I was not very comfortable dealing with the cash, which is why I arranged there to be a notary on hand, and I had the teller bring the money directly to an office where it was counted in front of the seller, and handed as the title as well as bill of sale got notarized. Like I said, I never had the cash on me (I traveled with under $50 on me), never even touched it. The deal went very smoothly once I was actually there, but before that it seemed all sorts of a headache. Took some homework, but seems to have worked out alright so far. I'm absolutely thrilled with the car. Throttle response is hard to get used to though, the drive by wire is very touch with some stall prevention built in -I'm guessing. Makes smooth take offs a bit harder than I'm used to. The engine has very different characteristics as well, much more torque down low, and great throttle response.

Anyway, as for how this car's different? It's a very different driving car, that's for sure. The engine has 4 upgraded scavenge pumps (2 per head vs. 1 per head on the earlier cars), and thus no oil starvation issues. It has a much simpler timing chain arrangement with an upgraded intermediate shaft set up, and fewer timing chains (3 vs. 5). It has more power and torque, it's a bit smoother. On board computers are greatly enhanced and a very noticeably stiffer chassis. It's also more aerodynamic, with less lift and oh my it has great headlights. (Mine has the bi-xenon self leveling litronics option). I have only named a few, small differences through out the car.

Anyway, as for looks, for the uninitiated I understand how they look similar, yet to my eyes the MKII is one of the best looking Porsches made. The front trunk lid and engine cover +the door skins, mirrors and roof are the same, but otherwise everything is different. This car is a lot more square, and sharper looking. It's also a bit wider, with much flatter hips and shoulders. Here's a couple of comparisons:

I like them, but jeebus like I need tires and anything decent is prolly going to be around a grand for the set.

I think $25-30k will get a decent early MK2 car in most cases (2002-2003).

There's a nice silver 2003 model in Virginia for $27,900 asking. I almost bought that car, but we couldn't agree. That car also had bi-xenons and the BBS'. Both are important IMO.

On a different note, I put two tires on the car today, and replaced the fuel sending unit. I'm always amazed at how easy 996's are to work on but if you're coming from new/Japanese cars, you may want to prepare for the expense of something like this. It really is the only down side to these cars in my opinion. That, and it's hard not to drive them hard/illegally. I almost got arrested yesterday in fact. Wake county sheriff cut me a huge break.

I've thought about doing the IMS bearing on this car, I'd consider it if I'm doing a clutch I suppose. :o

Anyway, are you guys coming to CMP? I'm going in two weeks, and again in August...

im doing cmp in september. I just finished hooking up the van into a premium bike hauler/RV. it's got an air mattress, gps, quality music (though shitty stock speakers), rear A/C, a generator for fans and shit, and I'm probly gonna throw a george foreman in it. 95% of the staff in that branch is complete douche....I do not know why, SECU is usually awesome to deal with but in that location they are horrible. I am sure they had the money.
