Only an issue when its real hot outside. Takes quite a long time, 45 minutes or so, picks up temp the fastest in stop and go traffic but will eventually overheat on the highway unless I baby it. When it overheats I seem to get a coolant leak centered around the water pump.
Thus far I have had it flushed and changed the thermostat. Fan clutch is fine it would appear, fins on the radiator arent too beat up. Waterpumps in my experience dont usually just go bad, they leak but there really isnt anything to fail. The entire engine compartment even when running at normal temperature gets VERY hot. That BB is warm.
Im guessing main issue is junk in the radiator? Might replace the waterpump anyway due to the leak at high pressure. Any thoughts? 7/30/2010 4:50:43 PM |

Shit...I'd take it to Saps in Garner and have 'em rod the radiator out. Give 'em a call. 7/30/2010 5:00:23 PM |

Live in hickory, but I can definitely have the radiator pressure tested somewhere here. 7/30/2010 5:19:25 PM |

Water pumps can "just go bad" . . . . I've seen the impeller come loose or the shaft break before. Not a frequent issue, but def possible. 7/31/2010 12:14:36 AM |

Seen some impellers that were totally separated from the shaft, or eroded all to hell due to electrolysis.
A buddy of mine had this issue with his '78 Datsun 280Z...and we swapped everything out, flushed the hell out of the engine/radiator, swapped radiators, even put a different head on the engine, to no avail. There's another engine waiting to go in it when time allows. 7/31/2010 4:53:54 PM |

check the fan clutch and condenser fans (if you are using the AC) 8/2/2010 8:37:34 PM |
