I found out today I've been paying for home networking for wireless internet with TWC, so I went out and bought a router, only to find out I also need a modem (obviously not computer savvy). The unit TWC is providing is one piece of equipment, a combined router/modem, that connects directly into the wall via a tv type cable. My house is about 1500 sq ft 2 stories, and I get on the internet both upstairs and down via desktop, laptop and ps3. The only router/modem at Best Buy is $149.99, but I figured I could find something better on the internet, just have no idea how to tell a good one from a bad one. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and obviously it would have to be compatible with Roadrunner Turbo. Thanks. 8/2/2010 3:49:37 PM |

I thought they normally provided a modem with service... router I can understand but modem?
Do you want 1 box or 2? Eg do you want a single all in one, or a modem and a router? As far as a specific modem, any cable modem will do.
Whats your internet habits like? Gamer, worried about security? 8/2/2010 3:56:42 PM |

^I just recently got this with TWC, and now apparently they use the all in one unit. I'd also like to get an all in one router/modem. Not a gamer, but do use netflix. Don't want something that is going to limit my performance very much. Not looking for the cheapest necessarily, just the best value. 8/2/2010 4:03:06 PM |

call twc and tell them to give you a damn surfboard modem before you drop your account. the only equipment you are responsible for is your personal network, which goes from the router down
Their Shit | Your Shit | [modem]===>|[router]===>[desktop] | || | ====>[laptop] | || | ====>[PS3] |

Well if you are going to keep the router you bought any cable modem would work. A decent motorola cable modem is around 50-70 bucks. I personally don't buy off brand networking equipment, but if you see one with decent enough reviews go for it.
If you plan on keeping cable as your isp for a while contemplate buying a cable modem that is capable of docis 3. It will be more expensive by far. You might not take advantage of it right now, but you will thank yourself down the road. 8/5/2010 12:27:01 AM |
