So apparently some prominent conservatives are suggesting that the 14th Amendment doesn't apply to the children of illegal immigrants born on American soil. They are saying that it only applied "back then" because it was referencing blacks after Reconstruction.

News flash, folks: the Amendment says nothing about a specific time when someone was born. It clearly says "All persons born ... in the US ... are citizens of the US." It's pretty cut and dry. I'm kind of ashamed that anyone, especially in the conservative arena, would suggest ignoring the literal words of the Constitution when it is inconvenient.

Grow a pair and admit that what is written gives "anchor babies" citizenship instead of engaging in the very tactics that liberals have used to erode our rights over the years.

You are of course assuming there is a significant difference between "prominent conservative" and "rights eroding liberal" aside from what TV network they appear on.

I don't think we'll see a majority large enough to pass or repeal any constitutional amendments ever again. It'll just be partisan wars and 51% votes from here to eternity. And I'm okay with that.

Liberals can't even amend the tax code.

I agree that conservatives tend to corner that market. Senator Richard Burr is pro-constitutional amendment banning gay couples from getting married. When NOM bused into NC last week it was in large part to protest NC not having a state constitutional amendment and urging law makers to do some amending.

I did enjoy how this thread's main post which seemed to be calling out some conservatives ended on an anti-liberal note

Supplanter's ability to turn every topic towards gay rights and the NOM thing is nothing short of astonishing. I feel like if you did a word association thing with him, it would go like this:

"Alright, Supplanter, first word: Mexicans."
"Gay marriage."
"Tricycle."
"Gay marriage."
"Lethal injection."
"Gay marriage."

---

But anyway, this reinterpretation of the 14th amendment is bullshit, the whole "anchor baby" issue is bullshit being conjured out of near-thin air to win Republican seats, and while we're at it, sure, an amendment about gay marriage would be stupid, too.

it does take quite a bit of skill to turn constitutional amendment into constitutional amendment, but with a lot of work it can be done

but my ability hardly rivals your ability to turn everything into alcoholism

I had no idea that liberals wanted to erode our rights; I thought the exact opposite was true and that erosion of rights was the sine qua non of conservatism.

An amendment to repeal this part of the Constitution could not be passed. I think citizenship should be a very easy thing to obtain for anyone, regardless of whether or not you were born here, your knowledge of the country, or the language you speak.

No, the vast majority of liberals and conservatives are looking to take away rights in some way. There are very few "classic liberals" or libertarians that get any attention.

Why amend the constitution when it doesn't actual curtail any behavior? If Congress wants to deport illegal aliens, just use the taxing power to do it: your grandfather must have been born here, or you must pay a $1million penalty. Failure to pay means deportation until you do. Afterall, Obama can fine, I mean tax, you for not buying insurance, certainly they can fine you for your parents not being born here.

^^Yeah, they can tax literally any behavior and there's nothing you can do about it, since it's all automatically taken out of your check now. It's amazing that people don't recognize the current tax system as tyranny under another name.

riiiiiiiiiight.
That's why they uphold the 2nd amendment, right?
Or free speech rights via the Fairness Doctrine...
Oh, they'll even force you buy things now in the name of healthcare...
Or how about "hey, you've got more money than you need."

yes, that's "upholding rights"

Let us just all agree that both parties partake in eroding our rights and have no problems wiping their asses with the constitution when it meets their purpose.

The difference is my ancestors came over here legally and were documented immigrants. I welcome with open arms anyone coming here on visa to migrate to the US. No matter if they are refugees, professionals moving for employment, immigrants from the diversity lottery, student exchange, etc.

You could just ammend the wording to say that you must be born here and maintain your residence here for a certain number of years in order to maintain your citizenship.

If your parents choose to move you to another country or are unable to obtain legal residence after you are born then you forfeit your citizenship or your parents forfeit their rights to you - it can be their choice.
