ticket no.....but everytime i went out downtown I used my military dependent card and almost never had to worry about a cover. There were even times when I was underage but they counted me as above age.

I use my dependent ID to get military discounts, but usually I don't use it when people ask for ID to check for age. Only reason being they stare long and hard at it, and then I have to tell them to flip it over cause the birthdate is on the back.

I've never been able to use it for getting out of a ticket though.

I don't think that you should expect any special treatment due to being in the military, and I also don't feel bad about it when I get it. I think that showing up to court or something in your uniform is very poor form, but I don't really have a problem with keeping my driver's licence behind my military ID, so that the cop sees the latter as I'm accessing the former.


This also goes to show you that speeding tickets are pretty much just a revenue generator. If there was much more to it than that, cops wouldn't let military people slide on it as often (furthermore, my experience is that they don't cut much slack in military towns. They can't. Bills have to be paid--they can't go letting every military affiliated person in a military town go.

I've never used my dependent card to try and get out of a ticket, but I'll use it everywhere else. I'm still too scared to try and use it to get a military reservation at hotels, because technically it's expired and I don't want to get stuck with the extra 50 or 60 bucks.

I have used it in a pinch for age verification when for whatever reason I left my driver's license in the car somewhere or at home and that's pretty hilarious because I'm probably 12 in the photo.

I used to book the government rate online for hotels. I think maybe one out of 5+ hotels actually checked my dependent card.

I never used my ID to get out of speeding tickets, but I was pulled over years ago for doing 55 in a 35 and my driver's license had a Fayetteville address. The cop then asked about Fayetteville so we started talking about the army and he let me go

My card got confiscated at the gate a few years ago since it was expired (dumb of me to show it). Sucks because New York & Company and some shoe store (Rack Room maybe?) offered a military discount and they never checked expiration dates. PacSun also offers a discount for active duty.

Not my ID but the fact that I was military got me out of a ticket when a F-V cop pulled me over for doing 70 in a 55, failing to maintain my lane and failure to use my turn signal. I simply explained that 1) I had been visiting friends in Raleigh and wanted to get home and get some sleep before PT, 2) I viewed the lanes more as guidelines than anything else and 3) that driving in Fayetteville had taught me that turn signals just tell people when they need to block you from coming over, so I quit using them. I'm pretty sure he thought I was drunk so he let me go when he realized I had complete control of my faculties.


OTOH, I once got a ticket on Pope AFB for doing 4mph over the speed limit. Fucking zoomies.

Yeah, driving on base is ridiculous. When I lived on Cherry Point I never went over the speed limit. My dad got a speeding ticket once (usually he gets out because the MP is all "oh shit an officer") for doing like 10 over on one speed-trap road, where it drops from 45 to 25.

^^^ that happened to me one time on one of those roads. i was on my motorcycle. stupid.

...although one of the best ones was right around that same time...got pulled over (not ticketed, of course) for "riding too close to the white line". the whole thing took like a half hour...had to wait for the dude's supervisor to come out, they breathalyzed me, all kinds of shit.

When I was riding EMS I had a EMS sticker on the back window, my lights on the dash and some EMS gear in the back seat and got pulled for speeding in SC. When the cop asked for my license/registration he said, "What are you? A fireman or something?" I said, No, I'm EMS. I wasn't trying to pull the EMS card was just hoping for some professional courtesy. He wrote me a ticket anyways.

Another time I got pulled by a HP in Apex late at night and failed the field sobriety test. He asked me why he shouldn't give me a DUI. I told him I had just passed my Paramedic test and if I got a DUI I wouldn't be able to work as a Paramedic. He thought about it for a minute and said, "I'd like to think if I was injured on the side of the road you guys would take care of me" I told him I'd throw everything I had in the truck at him lol. He let me off with a failure to stop at a blinking red light.

And I don't made it a habit to drink and drive, and certainly don't encourage it. Just is part of the story.

yesterday was the only time it ever worked for me. I got pulled by a state trooper (was going 80 not paying attention and actually passed him lol) on US 1 south.

He had me dead to the rights, so when he walked up to me, he was like "yeah I saw ya slow down, not payin attention to the speed there son?"

I'm all "no, I looked down and was like 'whoa gotta slow it down' and that's when I passed you sir".

asked me where I was heading (ft. bragg), asked me if I was military (yep), and he said "ok be more mindful of what you're doin on the road. Have a good one".

IMO, there isn't anything wrong with an active duty or veteran flashing an id for a little leniency, discount, etc.

But, I would feel uncomfortable receiving preferential treatment as a dependent, just because civilians cant tell the difference in a military i.d.

If you didn't serve, you don't deserve.

^ Yeah, I'm sure I could get the military discount at the theater here ($10 ticket for $7) by using my CAC (military ID, but it pretty clearly says Civilian on it).

I just don't do it. Never used my military dependent card to get discounts either. Maybe if I'm at the movies with an active-duty friend he'll get 2 tickets with the discount and I'll pay him back.

Slightly Relevant Story:
My younger brother (20) went to East Village one time, intending to use my friend's ID to get in. When they get there, a cop is standing right next to the bouncer. So instead of making up an excuse to go back to the car/home, my brother decides to just hand the bouncer his military ID. The response? "I'm sorry, I can't find the date on this, do you have another form of ID?" So my brother (who was already pretty drunk) hands the bouncer his DEBIT CARD. No questions asked, he gets let in.

I have no issues with showing your ID to a police officer to increase your chance of getting out of a ticket. As many others have said, it's up to the cop, doesn't hurt your chances. If I was a cop and you know you did something wrong and not a dick about it, I'd let you off with a warning, unless you are doing something completely stupid like DWI and going 30 over...

Or that dumbass card that people try to flash that says you know a cop or have given money to one. Deliberately handing it over sounds tacky as hell, but if they happen to notice either behind your DL then I would say that is fine.

^^Credit/Debit card as a second form of ID once a pretty acceptable first form has been shown maybe. If age is the issue I have found that 'astrological sign' is usually a pretty good question that causes idiots to lock up. DOB/Address/City have all usually been memorized.

a lot of cops (depending on the area) are reservists and they dont like to ticket their own. so i have gotten 2 warnings and got off in court because of being in the military. only in mass though. it really depends on where you are and who pulls you over

I've known a lot of kids that got out tickets and other crap because they were in the Marines. I was in the car and my sister was driving and she got out of ticket because I'm a Marine.

My buddy got pulled over and when the Cop asked for his license, he handed him his Military ID, thinking he'd get out of it. The Cop said "That's nice, now give me your license."

So if a Cop pulls me over, I have my Military over my driver's license, and they Military "accidentally" falls out while going for the license.

I got out a few by just having Marine stickers on my windows. I need get new ones, dammit.
