Holy molly, this was as good as any other christopher nolan movie
and to think i skipped it cause it looked boring.

Nolan is quickly becoming in danger of being the best director ever.

1 or 2 more good movies and he's in the top 5, a few more & hes the best.

Inception ruled, but...Christopher Nolan isn't even the best filmmaker of our generation. For one, Darren Aronofsky is better than Christopher Nolan, IMO. Then, there's also the Coen Brothers and P.T. Anderson, who are miles ahead of both Aronofsky and Nolan, and so forth.

the coen brothers are way overrated,
you cant seriously compare the movies of these people side by side and tell me one is way better than the other

they're all great, and what happens in the near future can set one apart from the others

fargo
big labowski
o brother where art thou
no country for old men

i'll take memento against all of these any day

The Coen Brothers are not overrated. Christopher Nolan is a really good director, but the Coen Brothers are much better. Nolan has to consistently keep making great movies for a while longer before he's in the same league as them.

Also, I do not understand why you listed four films by the Coen Brothers that are all great in your argument that the Coen Brothers are overrated.

Because he was saying that Nolan's Memento was way better than even the best Coen brothers movies?

he's made pretty much all good movies but I don't think he's made a true classic yet (although I haven't seen inception) and he does seem to be getting better, his only average and most overrated movie was batman begins but dark knight was a significant step up from that and one of the best comic book movies along with spiderman 2

^x3 Yeah, you're right...I realized that after typing that. Still, Memento is not better than any of those movies IMO. It's good, though.

yeah, memento isn't better than any of those 4 imo either.

But....
Quote :
"P.T. Anderson, who are miles ahead of both Aronofsky and Nolan, and so forth."

Really? P.T. Anderson? I call Bullshit. I mean, I LOVE Magnolia and really like Boogie Nights. There Will Be Blood is EXTREMELY overrated imo.. and i mean extremely. Daniel Day-Lewis is great in it. I won't take anything from him. But the film itself... ehh, I don't care if I never see it again in my life.

And Punch Drunk Love is... well, nothing super amazing. interesting, yes. But nothing amazing.

Following, Prestige, Memento, Batman Begins, Dark Knight, and Inception DEFINITELY put Nolan in the same "mile" as P.T. Anderson as far as i'm concerned. Shoot, you can get rid of the batman films and he's still right there with Anderson imo.

Aronofsky - i love The Fountain, The wrestler, and really like PI. I like Requiem, but it's overrated as a whole.

as far as the Coen Brothers go, they've definitely had more successful films. But it's not like they have an equal number of films under their belts and simply have more that were good. They've done more than the others, period. And some were definitely not that good. But, they have quite a few GREAT films.

I'd put it as Coen Brothers > Nolan = Aronofsky > P.T. Anderson

mainly because I'd see the next 1-2 movies the first 3 put out without question. Although, I am a little skeptical of Black Swan - but I'll still check it out. But I'd have to be sold a little on any P.T. Anderson film, especially to see it in the theater. I mean, i like a fair amount of his work, but he doesn't get the automatic "viewership" from me that the others do at the moment.

I actually agree that There Will Be Blood was insanely overrated. I've gotten into bitter debates with people by arguing that No Country for Old Men was a MUCH better movie than TWBB. I'd actually even agree that P.T. Anderson is a little overrated. I was speaking more from the perspective of a general consensus that PTA is one of the best filmmakers of our generation. It's not a consensus that I really agree with, but I think it's definitely out there, and it seems like every one of his films gets heaped with praise.

Again, I'm not a fan, but his legacy so early in his career is pretty solid. That's what I meant. But, I might be willing to put Nolan on the same footing as PTA; they're different filmmakers. One generally makes crowd-pleasers that are, at the same time, good films and one makes pretentious artsy flicks that are, at the same time, good films.

But, I definitely think Aronofsky is and will be better than Nolan. The Wrestler and Requiem are mind-bogglingly great films, and Pi is really, really good. And I think Aronofsky's best work is ahead of him; I think Black Swan will be great. But (and I know this contradicts what I said earlier about speaking to the general consensus), that's more of a personal choice--Aronofsky is one of my personal favorite directors.

i think There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men were both overrated and I usually like the movies that do horribly with critics and budgetwise (The Fountain, Punch Drunk Love)

Punch Drunk Love did not 'do horribly with critics.'

Punch Drunk Love is PT Anderson's best film.

and The Fountain is terrible.

I'm huge fan of both Nolan and Aronofsky. They may be my favorite current directors. I think the Cohen Bros are hit or miss. I loved O'Brother Where Art Thou, No Country for Old Men, and The Big Lebowski.

PT Anderson's Magnolia was great, but I'm in the camp that thinks There Will be Blood was nothing to write home about. I thought the first hour was excellent, then it went on without substantial developement or characterization for way too fucking long.

Really? I thought it was fantastic. Of course it went a little bit to the unrealistic/supernatural side but all of his typically do. Far better than The Illusionist, lol...

I wouldn't hold Nolan to as high a regard as the OP does, but I'm rarely disappointed by him either.
