apparently Michelle Obama told this to France's First Lady.

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/2010/09/16/2010-09-16_french_first_lady_carla_bruni_says_michelle_obama_calls_being_first_lady_is_hell.html?r=news

Quote :
"
What does Michelle Obama think about being First Lady? She calls it "hell."

At least, that's what Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the first lady of France, claims.

The former model and wife of French President Nicholas Sarkozy makes the revelation in the new biography, "Carla and the Ambitious," which she helped author, according to London's Daily Mail.

The statement was made during a private conversation between the two first spouses, during which Bruni asked Michelle Obama about her role as the wife to the President of the United States.

The First Lady allegedly replied, "Don't ask! It's hell. I can't stand it!"

Yeah, must be hell going on all those vacations on the taxpayer dime, living in a house for free on the taxpayer dime, etc, etc, etc, all on the taxpayer dime.

It's a tough life. Getting everything for free, traveling the world, reciting feel good speeches, meeting with world leaders, and pretending to give a damn about the average citizen?

while i'm sure MO appreciates all of the benefits of her position, being POTUS or 1st Lady has got to be a stressful job

Look at people like Clinton and Bush before they went into office

Then look how much grayer their hair is after they leave office

Its not all due to age

I don't think that's what she was referring to...

i think she was mostly talking about how Barrack gets drunk and beats her.

the first family has a travel budget. also they have paid for their own vacations minus the secret service protection (which they're basically required to use).

This.

I may not like the Obama's but contrary to popular opinion, they are still human. And probably even worse than the stress of the position, for a first spouse, is probably watching your spouse age 10 years in a mere 4. I mean, it pisses me off when my wife's job stresses her out, I can't imagine what it would be like if her every move was criticized and analyzed by some knuckle head with a microphone.

While it's unquestionably stressful to be president, that's no reason to throw a pity party for Obama. Given his unrivaled power and prestige, it's downright insulting. We waste our empathy on the mighty.

Because if they don't like it so much, why don't they just resign and go home? Oh they aren't doing that, guess it isn't THAT fucking bad then. I mean, its not like they are overseas fighting and dodging bullets. They're chillin in the White House. They have it SO bad.

Being first lady wouldn't be hell? You'd have TMZ running reports of your thighs after you went to the beach with your kids, every action or inaction would be under a media microscope, people are always lying in wait for you to slip up, etc.

Of course all of those negatives go along with being celebrity, but I think the life of a celebrity would be hell.

Again, if she didn't want it, she could have told Obama that she didn't support him running for Pres. If I recall correctly, he said that running for Pres was a decision they made together, with her being all for it.

^^^It's clearly an embellishment, and you can't really tell how much of an embellishment she's trying to communicate without hearing her voice or seeing her face. She could be sarcastic; she could be cold serious.

It's conceivable that a person would endure something unpleasant if they thought it was for the greater good.

"It's hell" is a stretch but I doubt the job is all roses and happy-time (on taxpayer money, of course), either.

while I agree this is non-news and is not in context, "hell" is certainly a poor choice of words.

hell is being unemployed with a family to feed
hell is watching a buddy get blown up by a roadside bomb
hell is enduring mambagrl's posts

hell is not being married to the President of the United States.

Drew Carey: Oh, you hate your job? Why didn't you say so? There's a support group for that. It's called EVERYBODY, and they meet at the bar.

Given that the Presidency, and by extension the position as First Lady, isn't something forced upon you its folly to expect a lot of public sympathy, but since this was a private conversation I don't think it was aimed at garnering public sympathy which makes the "oh yeah, your job isn't so tough" type comments feel somewhat misplaced.

Seriously though, everyone commiserates a little bit with their coworkers who can best understand what they're going through, and how many people in the world right now are currently in the position of first lady to commiserate with? All I'm saying is that I'm not throwing any extra sympathy her way because of this, but I'm not sending her a bottle of haterade either.

Bingo.

Again, it's a stretch, but it's not the wholesale assault on American ideals that some are making it out to be.
