Ok, this is not a generalization of people who get into MMA, but rather a look at the stereotypes that seem to get on this show season after season. Here are two major ones I have noticed.

College Tool Doosh

"Ya brah, I graduated a year ago from Arizona State, I was on the wrestling team and king doosh in my frat. Dude I got so much ass in college, my n my brahs drank and fought, it was sweet. So, ya know, I graduated and I was like brah what do I want to do with my life. I love to fight and beat people up, so I wanted to be a cop but they were like, nah brah you had like 5 DWIs in college. So basically I got into MMA so I could still drink n fight brah."

Working Class Hero

"I been working in the steel mill since I was 18. I work 14 hours a day at the mill, then I get off work and go to the boxing gym to train. Im just trying to get out of this town"

I liked Jamie Yager on last season, even though he lost to Bryant. I don't know about the stereotype thing, though.

I guess you could say Yager was "The Throwback"? I mean, I don't think his fighting style was, but he did look a bit like he was from the 1970s. I liked that about him.

I have watched most of the episodes of this show and can't really recall either of the two stereotypes you mentioned that really stood out to me. As far as reality shows go, this show is probably the least susceptible to your typical "roles". Sure they pick the personalities and give them a shitload of alcohol to create drama, but you don't see the token gay dude and the racist black man or the downhome southern boy every season like on some reality shows.

^Yager was one of the biggest tools in the history of the show. I guess it figures that someone as deranged as you would like him.

After season three it as been this way, all about the characters

its no wonder that after Rashad Evans the Ultimate fighter winners and high placers have been gettin dug in, there is no real season after the first 3 that has competitive fighters that continue to fight in the UFC at a high level, or in other organizations at a high level.

there are tales of them glossin over amazing fighters in the auditions to take guys that say a cool punchline and loook like protoypes..and then you get newcomers in the UFC like Jon Jones...Anthony Johnson reported that he was turned down at the TUF auditions. It is obvious that they frontload the show with a guy or two that they clearly want to win and promote and the rest of the guys are just decent fighters that add personality to the show so that spike viewers will watch and thus will promote the "focus" fighter of that show.

im just not that enthused to watch TUF, not the fault of the fighters so much but heavy handed SPike producers. Im sure if it was entirel up to Zuffa it would be mch better but the fact is SPike TV runs this show and they know what personalities they want

I think yager is awesome he just has a lot to learn

i dont think he was as big a douche as people try to say he was, a young dude that was tryna have fun and a couple of true douchebags around him take it the wrong way

and all the people that call him a douche for "quitting" have never set foot in a gym so theyre a non issue to me

Wrestlers tend to fit the "enormous jock douchebag" role pretty often. Most of them are cocky little pricks (see, CB Dolloway, Josh Koscheck, etc.) who have no respect for any other fighting background. There are a lot of guys from bad backgrounds, broken homes, and working class hero types not so much because that's what the producers want, but because those environments breed fighters.

Sadly, it does seem to be more about the entertainment factor rather than the quality of fighters. This is to be expected since it's a show designed to garner ratings rather than find the best talent. Most of your top flight new talent still comes in via working smaller shows, then bigger shows, then getting brought into a major camp and then getting a shot in the UFC.
